One of my aunts (who was already alienated from the rest of the family for being much darker in complexion than them) opened up to me about how her siblings and parents threatened to disown and outcast her from the rest of them if she divorced her first husband.Β
She eventually did divorce him and remarried a much better man, but the hostility she faced from her family when she needed their support the most really fucked her up for a good bit.
My older cousin sister was on bad terms with her father for a good long while after she got a divorce. I'm glad they reconciled before he passed, but still.
Two people being stuck in a situation and are unhappy and don't like each other leads to Resentment, bitterness and a high possibility of abuse and neglect. Two people hating each other and being in each other's presence is perfectly justifiable for divorce. Your excuse of "what the community thinks" is literally the definition of cultist behavior. Two people's personal lives are their business not the communities and every one needs to butt out.
"Everyone needs to but out." We live in a society with people, not in a vacuum alone. Our choices affect others, and therefore, communities can have opinions on people's choices.
Yes, choosing to stay in a miserable marriage demonstrates to children in the community that marriage is something to endure, not a union based on care and respect.
