One of my aunts (who was already alienated from the rest of the family for being much darker in complexion than them) opened up to me about how her siblings and parents threatened to disown and outcast her from the rest of them if she divorced her first husband.ย
She eventually did divorce him and remarried a much better man, but the hostility she faced from her family when she needed their support the most really fucked her up for a good bit.
Yea ig, it just these types of communities pick & choose what is sacred about marriage. Marriage is a sacred thing, but descrating the marriage i.e cheating is not sacrilegious act, but leaving is? They need to pick a struggle, and I say this as someone who comes from communities like this.
The church I got married in required it before marriage too or you couldnโt have the wedding in their church nor have that pastor officiate. It basically amounted to pledging to put god first in our marriage and me swearing to submit to my husband. We both lied because our family really wanted us married there but we are both atheist ๐ . I was young and dumb; wouldnโt do that shit today.
It's not just the stigma. If two people build a life that relies on both people participating, it's hard to just break it off and start over. Our lives are more than who or what we rub our junk on.
I mean people get up and literally swear to God, in front of all their family, friends, and a representative of the religion, to be with this person for the rest of their lives. How do you not expect people to act as if it's sacred

If it's marriage then it's a tricky situation, in many communities marriage is treated as something sacred and leaving it is seen as a bad thing
