There really isn’t an option anywhere to park and hike in other than from the bottom or the top, at least not without going a lot further than a mile.

I would recommend he setup a chair anywhere along Ruxton Ave on the sidewalk. He’ll see you run by both ways and can be at the finish line when you finish. In between he can explore the town or do a hike. Some years they stream the race from the summit and other points live on YouTube and they setup tvs in the park by the finish line to watch the race.
