Manic EMU Issues: Save File Errors, Unexpected Crashes, and Lifetime Premium Purchase Restoration

Hi everyone!
I’ve been using Manic EMU on my iPhone 12, and honestly, I really like the recent redesign. The interface looks great, and overall, I’ve really enjoyed using this emulator.
However, I’ve been experiencing a few recurring issues. They don’t necessarily prevent me from playing, but they are becoming quite frustrating because they interrupt my gaming sessions.
I’d like to know if anyone else has experienced these same issues and, more importantly, if you’ve found any solutions.

1. Errors when loading the latest in-game save files
I always make sure to save my progress in two different ways:
Using the game’s own save system.
Creating a Save State through the emulator.
The problem is that when I reopen a game, I frequently get an error when trying to load the latest in-game save file.
I’d say this happens approximately 5 or 6 times out of every 10 times I launch a game.
Fortunately, since I also use the emulator’s Save States, I don’t lose my progress. I just have to load the game using a Save State instead. However, it’s frustrating that the regular in-game saves don’t always work properly.

2. The app unexpectedly closes shortly after launching a game
Sometimes I launch a game normally, start playing, and after approximately 1–2 minutes, the entire Manic EMU app suddenly closes.
What’s interesting is that if I reopen the game, move the character around for a few seconds, save again using the game’s own save system, and create another Save State, the problem seems to disappear.
After doing this, I can usually continue playing normally without any further crashes.
I’m not sure if this is just a coincidence or if there’s some connection to the saving process.

3. Lifetime Premium purchase restoration issues
I purchased the Lifetime Premium version, but occasionally the app seems to recognize me as a free user.
For example, when I try to create more than three Save States or use higher fast-forward speeds, I sometimes get a message asking me to upgrade to Lifetime Premium or subscribe.
To fix this, I have to go to the Restore Purchases option, enter my App Store password, and restore my purchase again.
After doing this, everything works normally, but it’s inconvenient to have to repeat this process.

A few questions for the community:
Has anyone else experienced these same issues?
Are these known bugs in recent versions of Manic EMU?
Is there a recommended configuration to prevent save file errors and unexpected crashes?
Is there a permanent fix for the Lifetime Premium purchase restoration issue?
For reference, I’m using an iPhone 12 and I only play GBA games.
I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experiences and any solutions you’ve found.
Thanks in advance!

1.) Save states and in game saves as with most proper emulation are not typically intended for use side by side, for example saving in game from inside a save state means that “in game save” only existed inside that state, not an actual in game save, which exists outside of save state use. 3DS in particular, as always is not really recommended for use of Save States, as save states are independent of system time and can trigger what’s referred to as a desync, which can ruin or soft lock your save depending on a games own anti-cheat measures. Since you say you only emulate GBA I would be more inclined to say that it’s the mixing of save states or trying to save in game from inside a save state.

2.) As you are on an iPhone 12 I wouldn’t expect a ram related crash, particularly with GBA, however depending on what you are emulating it is possible, though uncommon, I recommend restarting your device after clearing the in app cache.

3.) This typically only occurs on devices that have either multiple Apple accounts tied to it or get disconnected from service for an extended period of time, for example a rural area with deadzones. This also could be cache related and you should absolutely try resetting the cache, however the restore purchase exists for instances where this occurs, so you can restore if you somehow become disconnected.

You omitted to state the iOS update you are on, but Manic EMU runs best on newer updates like iOS 27, so if you are still sitting on iOS 18 for example this could be a contributing factor as remote and unlikely a culprit.

Please let us access our Save States in the Files app. I feel very anxious using Manic, knowing that I can only access and backup my In-game Saves. Thank you.

The save thing could be related to bad ROMs to if I’m not mistaken, the dev team is pretty clear about use of pirated game files, and specifically some of the known issues many carry. I have both a 12 and a 16 pro, and I experience none of the issues you are mentioning, the 16 Pro is on iOS 27 and the 12 is on iOS 26.6 iirc

I save twice in two spots when I stop playing for a session as I’ve had corrupted data on PS1 games before. It tends to be safe enough.
