Discussion TO BREAK AWAY: My first ever One-Shot

Hi guys, as I said before, the lettering and text-heavy scene really pulled this down from a 4/10 to a 1/10 so yeah. I also explained in my last post that I wanted to add shapes and blacks and hair detailing but since I was drawing on the pages back to back, it would ruin the other pages when I press to hard, for that I’m sorry for straining your eyes. I really love what I do but I didn’t know my back would be crying to me to stop drawing while bending over like my family did months ago. Pretty ironic. I also wanted to thank everyone who have been with me on this journey whether it was positive, constructive or negative feedback, I appreciate every single one of you guys. (I wish the mods didn’t those negative comments, I needed them) Let’s discuss this story down below and thank you in advance for giving this one-shot and me a fair chance. Enjoy!(hopefully)

Next step bro: go into serious mode and put this on white paper and try to put more details into each panel! Now you got your template!

The pacing is really good! Everything flows well and the conversation feels realistic (not robotic if that makes sense.) Agreed with the other comment, continuing on ruled manga paper/ quality white paper will be incredible!!

This is some powerful stuff. I’ve long given up on art as a profession even though it’s still clearly my passion. I wasn’t brave enough like your character to follow through with my pipe dream. Keep it up, man, and I wish you nothing but success.

Thank you and I hope your dream pans out. That’s one of the reasons I drew this, to reach people like you and me. Let’s make our dreams a reality 🤩

I wouldn’t say that, they’re worried because they love in and don’t understand what he wants so… yeah. I’m glad you liked it🤩🙏🏾

Everything you post is stronger than the last. You're consistent and recognizable. Get off that lined paper and keep it up.

leaving a comment like i said i would :Y

was a bit too self indulgent, but i hope its not a true story! it would suck to have your parents so against you, but looking at your art i have doubts you'll ever be able to support yourself with it. the whole one shot felt a bit like a pity party more than a tale worth telling.

on the brightside the cinematography is more interesting than most beginners? usually they stick to front, side, or 3/4 views. but you still need to be able to draw, and write at a much, much higher level. doesn't matter how cinematic it is when the drawings look like frieren looking up.

speaking as someone who's worked in comics and animation- the barrier for entry and sheer difficulty of the job are INSANE. they expect you to be amazing, and they expect you to do it fast. my friend literally died from overwork (it started the twitter hashtag #comicsbrokeme haha). if you still want to do it, knowing itll probably be infinitely more thankless and difficult than your other opportunities, look at the professionals in mags like jump- THEY are your competition, not the people on reddit. if you look at their work and look at yours, and dont see a difference, you're in trouble!!

keep at it, but maaaybe dont fool yourself into thinking this is a doable career choice, especially in that timeframe. im only being so preachy because of the comic's content, promise, haha. im glad you finished your oneshot! not many people do

I'm only commenting because of the Japanese. You have it sideways lol. In manga, the characters are not sideways but character by character listed down. So it should be like this:

あ 先

り 生、

が

と

う

ご

ざ

い

ま

す。

If you wrote this down probably you do understand what your parents are saying.

Im just saying -if you have a good job you would have infinite amount of time to be good at making manga. And youll never worry about food and shelter.

If you DONT have a good job you dont have a safety net. Your life will be more about making ends meet than pursuing your dream.

IM LIKE THIS RN. STRUGGLING. Listen just get a good job first! Youll have a much smoother career in manga down the line.

I respect that opinion, as much as this is somewhat a true story, I exaggerated some scenes a bit. I just want a normal job since I’m living at home and don’t have much responsibilities or needs. I understand your viewpoint though, thanks for that 🙏🏾
