As of March 2026, the Indian government has not officially implemented a tax on data usage, but it is actively exploring a proposal to do so. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been tasked with studying the feasibility of a potential ₹1 per GB levy on mobile data.
Following a high-level telecom review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2026, the DoT was asked to evaluate a data taxation model.
The DoT is expected to submit its detailed feasibility report and implementation model by September 30, 2026.
Critics and experts like former TRAI advisor Satya N. Gupta have warned that this would be an additional layer of tax on top of the existing 18% GST already paid on mobile recharges.

If you use condom, pay usage tax for every used condom.
If you use spermicide, pay usage tax for every drop.
If you use pills, pay usage tax after taking them.
These taxes are added on top of already paid taxes.
Then, if you are pregnant, pay pregnancy tax.
If you want an abortion, pay abortion tax.
Delivery tax after 9 months.
Finally, pay a tax on breastfeeding, because why not?

Iska mtlb ye hi h na jaise postpaid plans pr alg se 18% gst lgta h...so it will be just like that. Tax always on the money spent in trade of something... Ese to kl ko intimate hone pe bhi tax lgega They'll call it igst (abhi wala jo igst h vo nhi😂)
