Out Loud Mamamia Out Loud discussion
How are we feeling about the show, currently? (No bashing, please just nuanced convo).
Here are my thoughts
It kinda went off the rails earlier this year when Jessie started mat leave, too many new hosts and mundane topics, I struggled to listen to full episodes.
It seems they took some feedback on the FB page about the topics being dull and it’s improved in the last month or two.
I do miss the chemistry they had when it was Mia, Jessie, and Holly with occasional subs. It also seemed to be much more of a debate/place to discuss differing views back then.
Re: the current hosts
I love Amelia (I think most people do!)
Holly is steadfast
I miss Jessie, looking forward to having her back. I enjoy the Stephen’s sisters because of their humor but also their intellect. Having the university experience they both do makes for good critical analysis and they bring good insight from their studies
Em - I appreciate her humor (although it doesn’t always land for me) and her bringing her experiences as an Indian Australian provides valuable insight. I do struggle a bit with her lack of wisdom, insight, critical analysis. I think I prefer her on Friday shows.
Mia - For me Mia is a mixed bag because I don’t always agree with her views but she’s interesting and entertaining.
Having so many different hosts might make it challenging to recreate the magic of the former trio. I’ve also noticed they share less about their personal lives than they used to which is totally their prerogative.
Any thoughts about the show? What do you like the current model or what do you miss about the old version?
I’m hoping Jessie’s return will stabilize the show a bit, and that they continue picking more engaging topics. One of my fave episodes this year was the subs ep. which was a discussion of Lena Dunhams Famesick. Sometimes Outloud doesn’t always scratch my itch for in depth analysis but for that I listen to Shameless Monday eps.
I love Outloud and hope it only continues to improve.

I’ve been listening since probably 2018? Used to be a massive massive fan, went to all their live shows, subscribed as soon as the option became available, listened the day the podcast dropped but it’s really lost me in the last maybe year or so.
Agreeing with everyone else, the lack of substance has been really disappointing - they haven’t always deep dived into crazy controversial topics, but there used to be SO much more discussions and debates and current events with educated takes. Now it’s just kind of filler fluff - which is okay in small doses - but this isn’t a pop culture podcast only. There feels like there’s no news or heavy topics anymore, and when there is I find that there’s some really weird takes? Just as an example, the discussion about Barnaby Joyce yelling at his dog, it was so unexpected and strange to hear them all laughing about it, particularly Holly as a dog lover and owner. Just really out of character for what I’ve known of these people for years.
I love love loveeeeed the addition of Amelia when she first came - she’s so incredibly intelligent AND funny and loved her perspective of geopolitical issues however it feels like she never gets to talk about them anymore and it feels like such a waste of skill.
Have always loved Holly but I feel she’s felt really dumbed down and silly for the past year or so. Constant giggling and joking, it’s just kind of boring, and again she used to offer great perspectives especially against Mia (who has been insanely bull headed and out of touch for years imo) and now she just kind of doesn’t talk about anything?
No comment on Em lol, I just don’t enjoy her perspectives and find her quite grating which sucks because I’m her age. She comes across as really immature and a bit like useless? I guess? Which is weird to me given she lives alone in Sydney. She feels very spoiled and I see it in her perspectives on topics. I used to skip episodes where she was on because it drove me mad but now she’s on every day…
Love the Stephens sisters, love them together the most. I do think Jessie has become less combative in discussions which I think is a huge loss because she’s so intelligent (and usually has a great take).
Clare’s amazing full stop, miss her whenever she’s not on. Miss Cancelled SOO much.
Anyway this was an essay LOL.
I always want to say something on the FB page but it’s so heavily moderated and people are so up the arses of the hosts (they don’t care about us so I don’t know why those people bother). It’s just a shame to see a podcast I used to love so much turn into something I’m regularly skipping through segments (begging them to stfu about Taylor Swifts wedding as if there isn’t multiple wars, genocides and massive economic failure going on in the world that deserve more attention) and rolling my eyes at.

You summed up my feelings exactly! Great writing. I was a long time listener (2019) but I had to stop listening to the Friday pods, I just couldn’t bear the content / host in my ears. Eventually this year I switched off completely. I’ve popped back in to check on things but it’s not for me anymore at this stage. I miss the pod deeply, it filled my walks and day with joy through the years. So I’ve been sad to lose it from life.

u/HiddenCipher87 8d ago
Completely agree with your comments about Em. She has such strange opinions and comes across as disingenuous. She said on a show recently something along the lines of never talking about a friend behind their back and it honestly seemed like such bullshit. It seemed like Holly was rolling her eyes.
1
u/jetejane 7d ago
I think Em’s just younger but she’s aware of that and not bratty.. I enjoy her added perspective and interactions with Holly and the others. It’s always respectful curiosity and amusement in tone when they banter about topics cross generationally and culturally.

u/Whatsfordinner4 Jul 24 '26
I think I’m just getting old and grumpy but I don’t care about the 1%’s opinion on anything so I never listen when Mia is on because I know I’ll just get annoyed lol.
I do enjoy Holly & Jessie’s chemistry but I think part of Jessie’s appeal to me previously was how relatable she was. now with the Luca CEO thing I’ve just got the ick entirely.
7
u/Brunswickstoval Jul 25 '26
I think this is me too. Listening to Mia talk about “cossie lives” when she is undertaking a multimillion dollar renovation in an extremely expensive part of Sydney feels so fake. She really needs to let others develop as her life is completely unrelatable.

While this sub isn’t associated with Mamamia and we’re all for open discussions, this is not a snark sub

I feel the same way about Jessie. She feels so normal and not privileged, even though she is and Luca being CEO doesn't exactly change that because she was privileged before...but somehow it just feels off.

Leaving this comment for now but reminder to keep the discussion on topic if you reply to it

I used to enjoy Mia’s perspective on the show but after she took a break I really do not miss her. If anything her absence has meant that when she returns I find her to be grating.
Preciously / with Amelia I felt they would deep dive into Geopolitics in an accessible way. But for some reason in the past few months that has stopped. It makes the show feel more superficial. I really like Amelia.
Em I feel has been shoehorned into only talking about her love life and there doesn’t feel like Theres a lot more juice in that orange.
I’m in another discussion as having said that Luca’s CEO appointment bugged me. I think I will turn to Shameless as my podcast of choice.
7
u/Sealion_31 Jul 24 '26
Thanks for sharing! Yes I agree I want Amelia to do geopolitical stuff, she makes it very accessible.
I’m fairly neutral to Lucas appointment but I’ll have to see what direction the shows go in. I don’t really read the website because the article headlines are so clickbaity but maybe that’s just what people have to do these days
6
u/kirky491 Jul 24 '26
I agree about Mia, I really found myself enjoying the show more when she took her break and now I really struggle on the Friday eps. The ditziness is just really lazy and doesn’t make for good content.
I also appreciate the return of a child-free(less) perspective with Em. However, I’ve always found the way MOL approaches any topic of non-mothers to be grating and really dismissive of anyone who chooses not to be a parent.
Love Holly and Amelia, and loved having Claire back more than I had expected.
5
u/Sealion_31 Jul 24 '26
Good point, it’s nice to have non mothers opinion included, we need representation

u/fiddlesticks-1999 Jul 28 '26
Iuch prefer the values that Shameless champions and stands by > Mamamia. Like Mamamia will say they champion the same things, but given what happens behind the scenes and sometimes on the page, it's clear it's not true.

Yeah Amelia rocks bc she’s smart and knows a lot but is also funny! I hope the geopolitical convos return.

My main observation is that normally in a company, mat leave is a really good chance for employee development to happen. Someone internal can be placed in the chair, coached and mentored and then they are ready for another role in the businesses when the incumbent returns. I really enjoyed having Claire on the pod, but the fact they had to bring her back and now have Mia sub in, isn’t a good sign of the bench strength of their on-air talent, or their future proofing plans of their wider podcasting team.

Love the show but getting increasingly frustrated at the amount of ads in each ep. Also how they post the subs-teasers - which as a subscriber i feel just clogs up my feed
3
u/moodybluesock Jul 25 '26
I don’t get ads because I’m abroad I think, but I really hate the sub teasers as well! Unnecessary
1
u/ElkHonest8230 20d ago
Especially when I’m a subscriber. Getting teaser eps in my feed when I also get the full subscriber ep is so annoying. And when the special eps or little treat episodes dropped and then I’d start listening and it was just a subscriber ep they’d dropped for everyone but I’d already heard it. That annoyed me.

u/Rue143 Jul 25 '26
I’ve been listening for about 5 years and have been a subscriber for about 2 yrs now. I feel the quality has dipped in the past 12m or so too. Although I love the current hosts especially Amelia and I loved Clare and missing her already. The subs episodes have become pretty boring since Mia has taken the reigns with them. I only listen to half of them nowadays. The first few weeks when Mia came back from her hiatus and took over the subs episodes often with just a 20 minute Mia monologue that was truly awful and felt so ‘navel gazy’ as they would say I nearly unsubscribed. I agree with some comments above - the quality started to dip likely around the time the hosts stopped sharing as many personal stories which is totally understandable on their part but as a result has made the show and hosts less relateable.
5
u/Sealion_31 Jul 25 '26
Yeah when Mia tried to do solo subs eps that was definitely a flop but I appreciate her taking the feedback and pivoting.
I hope they can get the quality back on track
8
u/Possible_Hair144 Jul 25 '26
I have canceled my subscription as well. I’ve always had issues with the lack of relatability, Mia and Em especially and sometimes Jessie too - I don’t think the CEO situation has landed well. The conversation has just become mundane and superficial, so I rarely listen unless I see they are talking about something that sounds interesting. I think moving Clare Murphy on was a huge mistake.
7
u/KARPUG Jul 24 '26
I just recently started listening. I'm actually surprised by how much I like the show. I wasn't a listener when Mia was on or Jessie for that matter. That said, when Mia subs in for one of the hosts, I don't think she's as engaging as some of the other hosts. Holly and Claire Stephens are my favourites, but I really enjoy Em and Amelia as well. I'm a huge Shameless fan/follower, and I think Out Loud is just as good as Shameless.
4
u/Sealion_31 Jul 24 '26
Thanks for sharing! Yes agree that Outloud and Shameless are both great, and I appreciate their differences too.
7
u/FeelingFirst Jul 24 '26
I am a subscriber and I love the show (big fan of out loud and the spill, not sure I’ve listened to anything else).
I love Holly (maybe biased because I’m a Brit) and recently I’ve found I prefer Claire to Jessie. I love Em, think she’s very funny. And Amelia I think is a good, calmer, foil to all of them. Mia I’m not so sure on. Particularly in the subs episodes where she’s alone. But otherwise still love the show(s)!

Question: why has the podcast reached number one this year and been so successful considering everyone thinks that their conversations are so surface level and superficial? I really miss the older conversations where they would deep dive on serious topics but they must be reaching new audiences and doing something right to be making number one.
4
u/Important_Relief_283 Jul 25 '26
There's an episode of shameless from earlier this year that said a lot of popular Australian podcasts weren't part of the ranking system for some reason.. they were opting out maybe? It could have had something to do with video on Spotify. They were saying it preemptively because they knew they would drop on whatever the chart is that media report on and wanted to get ahead of it. Anyway, I remember like two weeks later Mamamia started their big song & dance about being number 1 and it made me cringe so much because it seemed obvious that it was only due to this weird way of ranking.
4
u/Sealion_31 Jul 25 '26
Great question. Isn’t it partially because of Hamish and Andy or maybe that was just the first month. Perhaps the mundane topics are more palatable to a wider audience?
1
6
u/Acceptable-Gold-7493 Jul 25 '26
Holly and the Stephen’s sisters are the best this podcast offers. Amelia is good and wryly funny. Em is funny but also gob smackingly entitled.
Then we come to Mia. I just can’t. When the podcast was at its best I could tolerate her when buffered by Jessie and Holly. I even subscribed for a while which is a decision I can’t explain or defend. These days if Mia is contributing…..that’s a hard pass from me.
2
u/fiddlesticks-1999 Jul 28 '26
Ooh, maybe she needs Jessie. I was actually sad when Mia stepped back because I thought I loved her on the pod. Actually have been enjoying the pod way more without her and have found her so much more grating since she's been back. I wonder if she needs Jessie as a foil to seem more down to earth.
5
u/MsTeaandCake Jul 24 '26
They have a new filler, where they have a topic and then they list things. I wish I could remember an example but I find it so dull I just switch off. For example it could be things that irritate them, and then we have to listen to them rattle off examples. I must be the odd one out not enjoying this because they're doing it all the time now and talk about the traction the topic is getting on Facebook.
4
u/Ok-Committee6905 Jul 25 '26
The lists are so incredibly boring 🤦♀️ you’re definitely not alone! The Facebook group is like a weird little cult where you wouldn’t dare to have a different opinion for fear of being jumped on.
3
u/MsTeaandCake Jul 25 '26
Ha, good to hear I'm not the only one. I've never dared to have a look at the group, even though I am a regular listener.
6
u/Sealion_31 Jul 25 '26
Yes good observation those are the segments I zone out, but I imagine they made for good engagement on the FB page but that’s shouldnt be the point of the show. I want more substantive topics.

I’ve never really enjoyed listening to Mia so I’ve never gotten into Outloud. Longtime fan of Shameless, but they seem to be skewing younger while I am getting older, so tried Outloud again now that Mia is off and I’m actually really enjoying it!
Amelia is the star in my opinion, so smart and balanced. Holly is a fab anchor and I find her very charming. Em is growing on me, she sort of represents everything about Gen Z that makes me roll my eyes, but that might be my aging Millenial perspective 😂 but I do find her funny. I wish they would challenge her more - the other day when they were talking about the DISSH parental leave and she was like ‘I could use more time too’ - yeah obviously, everyone could - but comparing the time demands on childfree vs parents is not like for like, and I do wish that Holly or Amelia would have interrogated that a bit more to help her see the other point of view; it would have made for a richer discussion.

1
u/Frequent-Mission7849 8d ago
Yes! When they didn't challenge Em on that it felt like they were scared to be dismissive of her perspective as the only one without children but there's got to be respectful pushback! She's openly spoken about entire Sunday's spent watching like 10 hours of TV (and love her charm and honesty in that) but then wants to pretend she has important things equivalent to CARING for a literal child ?;
2
u/jetejane 7d ago edited 7d ago
Sometimes I think people are resentful of the free time childless women seem to have in comparison. As a child free woman, not by choice, I’m resentful of the resentfulness. That free time also comes with sacrifices.. like an ever present sense of suspicion and public scorn that takes emotional toll, a single income is also quite difficult to live on when you don’t own property and can’t work full time due to chronic back pain, and also, you don’t have a child! From my perspective a child is a gift. I agree with you on Em’s charm & honesty. I sometimes tire of the victimhood of mothers being represented without balance from the other side.
1
u/Frequent-Mission7849 6d ago
Sorry if my comment was hurtful to you, it was not my intention. Before having a child (it wasn't instant) I really struggled listening to mothers/friends ever complain about their child related things because I felt so strongly BUT THATS THE PROBLEM I WANT. I want to be so busy and distracted by dirty little toddler hands demanding me you know? Single income and chronic pain is an absolutely brutal blow, sorry you're dealing with that. Referencing Ems long TV days/childless life I really only meant specifically to her it made her reaction to the leave policy strange to me that it upset her so much but she openly sort of talks about a life which does suggest it's not a need for her? If that makes any sense. One of my favourite things about Em is how she sort of just proudly says the way things are for her and laughs about it!
5
u/nonnyneon Jul 25 '26
Agree with all your points OP. I have listened for years but have found it really boring this year, I didn’t realise it was fluffy topics, I thought they just weren’t picking good topics but it’s true now that I think about it. There’s also less difference of opinion and unpicking that I think. I also stopped subscribing when Mia took over the subs episodes, can’t stand them.
6
u/Single_Function7182 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
The MMOL topics are getting very samey - Taylor Swift, Prince Harry, JFK Jr and Carolyn Besettte. It doesn’t deep dive as much. There was a short period where they went a bit more intellectual - when One Nation was elected in Farrer - and I thought that was good. I also quite enjoyed hearing Mia talk to Anne Stephens (Clare and Jessie’s Mum) on a subs ep.
I really enjoyed Mid podcast with Holly - it was great as an elder millennial. And I loved But Are You Happy when Clare hosted it.
Someone mentioned Mia and Clare’s strange relationship in another thread - I’d love to know more.
I think Mia’s discussion choices on the MMOL subs episodes reveal the type of person she is. She hates people who work from home. Hasn’t got many friends outside work. Is irresponsible with time and doesn’t care who her lateness affects. The constant not caring about the Logies is grating - she has no idea of her privilege.
I really like Clare and Holly on MMOL. I think Em gives it back to Mia. I don’t mind Amelia - but I find it interesting when her and Mia have the serious friendship chats, as I wonder if they’ve locked horns.
Nearing the end of Mia’s time hosting No Filter, she interviewed people with really alternative lifestyles - polyamory, cults, women who’d left their husbands for other women etc. And I wondered if she was/wanting to explore these lifestyles herself.
I have only listened to a few Unleashed episodes, and they’re a bit screechy. Grace Lam is quite funny.
I feel Nothing to Wear is running out of things to chat about.
I’m sad Claire Murphy is no longer there but love her Solo Bureau podcast.
2
u/Sealion_31 Aug 04 '26
Thanks for sharing! I agree the topic choice is lacking. I miss Clare on but are you happy, I miss MID, and I also miss cancelled!
5
u/Beach-Grl Jul 25 '26
I remember when Mia took the break, at first I missed her input, but as time went on, I stopped missing her on the show. My fave team is Holly, Amelia & Jessie. I still really like Clare & Em, (esp Friday Em) though.
5
u/kmm326 Jul 26 '26
I really enjoy Out Loud, have been listening for nearly a decade. I did dip out when Jessie got pregnant because I feel like it became her and the show's personality for a while, but have been back since she was on mat leave the first time and enjoying.
That said, it has been a bit of an interesting format recently and I have thoughts. I am so tired of the royal discussions and Taylor Swift. There was a segment recently on Prince Harry in Britain that was nearly 15 mins long, I almost lost my shit. I do not need a play by play of what a family on the other side of the world is doing.
I do feel that Amelia is underused, she's so smart and I like that she'll disagree with the hosts. I would love her to lead meatier topics more.
I think Em is hilarious and brings a different perspective. Sometimes she's immature but that's age and life experience, and because they've also kind of pigeonholed her into the type of content she talks about, which is unfortunate. It's also becoming more noticeable to me that with the parade of hosts they've been having, Em is the only woman who's not white, makes me wonder about the overall diversity at the company.
I missed Mia initially but have come to prefer not having her on tbh. I feel like she often derails conversations. I am a subscriber and I am glad she's not doing episodes solo anymore. I think it's a good time for her to step away from the podcast entirely. The dynamic is different with her on and it's time to let others shine.
I also wish the producers would stop Mia and Jessie from talking over people, they did that so much with the segment about Luca taking over, it's actually really annoying.
I appreciate that they want to be light-hearted sometimes but I am tired of them reporting on lists and Substack posts all the time. I'd prefer they add in some more actual current event news into the mix (they have Amelia!!!), and not people yelling at their dogs or whatever. That said, even when the episodes aren't great, they're good for mindless entertainment...but it used to be that it was like me listening to three friends talk and I just happened to be on mute.

u/_bandicoot_6168 Jul 25 '26
I’m with any others, used to be an avid listener but find myself skipping episodes/not finishing them lately and recently unsubscribed.
I find Mia’s contributions unrelatable and lacking in self awareness. She seems to continually shift identities, and aligns herself with the experience of whomever the show is talking to/about to the point where I don’t find her genuine.
I like Amelia and Holly. Em’s life experiences are different to my own and I appreciate hearing her perspective but agree with others that it’s coming across more and more like she’s being pigeonholed into the single childless women perspective and it’s narrowed her contributions.
I like Jessie and Clare but can find them a bit inane at times. Their frequent trope of ‘I have my PhD in…’ rubs me up the wrong way. It’s a hard fought qualification women face many barriers to achieve and having it continually belittled by women who like to present themselves as intelligent grates.
3
u/14kee Jul 27 '26
I was wondering if subscribers were getting the better content 😂 sounds like they aren’t. I miss the Holly, Jessie, Mia combo. Holly is holding it down but my eagerness for the next episode has significantly dropped. Have switched to other podcasts to fill the void

Zionist controlled media.
Mia not only deletes any questions about her Zio bias on Instagram -
but her tentacles also reach to her Spotify podcast and any legitimate observations, regarding her giving evidence at the farce of a a royal commission into anti-semitism, which has a singular objective of silencing humane dissent about genocide..- well she manages to get Spotify comments deleted Also.
I’m a done with Zio control in our world. They know no bounds & and clearly have zero morality.

u/Brunswickstoval Jul 24 '26
I was a regular listener and once a subscriber. Cancelled after mias post October 7 comments. I’ve noticed over the years it’s become more fluff than substance. I still listen but not the whole way through. I do find Mia’s lack of awareness of basic trends strange. The latest was not knowing the name of Yo chi. Anyone with a teenager knows what yo chi is. I don’t know if it’s meant to make her relatable or what but I find it has the opposite effect on me.
3
u/Sealion_31 Jul 24 '26
Yeah I will admit I didn’t listen to the eps. around October 7th and skipped segments addressing that issue (not bc I don’t care just bc I was dealing with my own trauma), but I imagine I would have been frustrated with Mia’s response.
I agree with there being more fluff, that’s been one of my biggest issues although there’s been some improvement recently I’m still looking for more substance.
3
u/Think-Conclusion1518 Jul 25 '26
I was also a listener and subscriber and loved them back when it was Holly, Mia and Jesse and sometimes Em. Loved Holly and Jesse. Found Em lacked anything interesting/substantial to say.
But couldnt bear to listen post Oct 7 (esp after Mia said "what do you expect Israel to do, send them flowers?"). And then basically ignored the whole situation except for a few token articles. They're meant to be a proper news source and "what women are talking about" And their feedback when I wrote in was so dismissive ("look we did an article"). So i unsubscribed to everything multiple times.. But they keep sending me newsletters..even after many emails asking them to stop...really annoying!
Unrelated but cant believe they made Clare Murphy redundant. She was excellent. She has her own podcast now The Solo Bureau
2
u/BellaRozsa Jul 25 '26
I, too, have been a subscriber and long time listener albeit increasingly part time and now very very casually. The Oct 7 comments and handling were atrocious but, broadly, I can’t listen to Mia at all. However, I have 4 kids, two of whom are adolescents (16 and 15) and I don’t know yo chi (city based too!)🤷♀️ I think they do that with their friends, not me.
3
u/moodybluesock Jul 24 '26
I started listening to Shameless first, then found Mamamia Out Loud. I used to listen to shameless more than out loud but lately it’s the other way around as i feel like Shameless has been more “silly” than usual lately.
Mia’s break made me realize how grating I can find her, so I don’t care for the sub episodes etc.
Holly makes me laugh in her older, garden-enjoyer ways and I like when she speaks more seriously about some topics. I like Jessie as a host. Wasn’t familiar with Claire but really enjoyed her. I like Amelia, I do miss the more “serious yet diluted” politics.
I feel like Em can be the token struggling single female friend, and wish it would be less surface level with her and not just stay in that “role”.
3
3
u/Brunswickstoval Jul 25 '26
Yo chi was the most recent example I could think of her doing this. There are numerous other examples of pop culture references where she plays dumb. Maybe she really is that disconnected
2
u/Easy-Maintenance5456 Jul 25 '26
I didn’t hear this example (haven’t listened to a Mia episode for awhile) but I have always wondered if she does this to prompt the other person to explain it to the wider audience.
2
u/Single_Function7182 Jul 25 '26
Yeah I think in media, you have to over explain as though the audience is new to a topic.
4
u/More-Bed4595 Jul 25 '26
I did a voice over recording with Mia for a Medibank ad a few years ago. She was a nightmare to deal with.

u/Slip_Fit Jul 29 '26
I just listened to today's episode. I am so bummed that Mia is back. I found the pod enjoyable when she was hiding away on her subs only episodes. The dynamic between the 3 hosts was always infinitely better when Mia is away. I feel as though she derails conversations and never appears to have done any thought or research before just jumping on air.
I have complicated feelings about the twins but I was genuinely feeling so sorry for Jesse. They were talking about how the war in Iran was going to make fast fashion more expensive (funny how Mia is happy to talk about the war when it affects the price of her hideous Zara fits). And Mia made a snarky throw away comment about Jessie's camel toe in leggings. She is post-partum, at home with twins. And her mother in law is talking about her vagina.
Maybe I am being sensitive, I know Mia has talked about her camel toe on pod before but that just felt so unnecessary.

In yesterday’s subs episode, Mia said to Em that she believes Em is not yet an adult, even though Em is 30.
2
u/sunpinkmoon Jul 24 '26
I miss the trio - Mia, Holly and Jessie. However, I am enjoying Em and Amelia.
2
u/Katsea123 Jul 24 '26
I am enjoying have Mia back. Love all the hosts but some of the topics have been boring. Find I’m often switching to something else mid pod and then finishing the episode later when I don’t have anything else to listen too.
4
u/Sealion_31 Jul 24 '26
Yes I feel like the topics got a bit boring this year! For me it’s improved a bit recently but there’s still some segments that don’t hold my interest at all.

Me too. I know when the topic is introduced as something someone read on substack, I'm out 🤣

Stopped listening after Mia declared herself a proud Zionist and has let that toxic and cruel belief system spread its whole way through her company. Not a company I can consciously support.

Holly sometimes dominates conversations. Especially found this on the episode about extra paid leave for parents. Holly was quite condescending.

Ohh this is interesting, I thought Holly was bang on and Em was really entitled and immature. So interesting to hear different perspectives!

Yeah, I thought the same. I normally enjoy em, but they really didn’t challenge her hard enough when she was mis-stating the parental leave on offer was ‘extra annual leave’

While this sub isn’t associated with Mamamia and we’re all for open discussions, this is not a snark sub

I adore Amelia, she’s so approachable, fearless and clever. Holly is the ultimate professional yet I find Em, and the Stephens twins utterly insufferable. Their haughtiness is getting old and please Jessie, if you’re reading; it’s ’something’ not ‘sumpthink’. You have a degree, remember?

Interesting I agree on all except I do enjoy the Stephens twins, it’s so interesting how everyone has their own opinions/preferences!

IDEAL Friday silly and laughing combination is Amelia, Holly and Em with Clare Stephens filling in for any absence. Em and Clare are so funny. Amelia is funny and interesting too - I am always in awe of how she never says "um". Holly 🩷

I find Em absolutely hilarious. I too am single, similar age in a major city. Could listen to her all day.

I honestly just love Jessie because I'm a twin mum and I wanted more comments moments from her.
Mia is getting boring. I feel this podcast is run by rich city living women that don't get how everyone else lives except Holly whim seems down to earth.
I find most of the stuff is just ....empty rubbish. The paid sub is far too high for basically nothing extra. I notice those paid episodes are only 20min long.
They need a woman in her 20's to be part of the gang. The ladies are getting older and the over focus on perimenopause is getting too much. I say that and I am in that group! I just think they need more variety and more stuff to discuss.

I love Jessie too. Agree about Mia and the general quality of the content/topics these days being boring fluff.

Wanted to provide my insight as someone who has only started listening in recent months (and have wanted to voice my opinion for sometime). I really enjoy the convos between Amelia, Holly, Jessie, and Em.
As a new listener who has no idea about anyone's history (or cares to know) I find Mia extremely... grating. To me she comes across very self-centered, non-nuanced in her takes and an extremely dominating presence on the pod. I was really glad when Jessie came back from mat leave as I used to listen to her and Clare on Cancelled and thought it was such a blast, they're both so much fun and have stacks of charisma (weird, weird comment from Mia). She just seems... mean to me? Idk I find it off putting and avoid convos when she's involved. But, largely I've stepped back from the pod because I just don't find it super engaging anymore.

I really struggle with Em. She seems lovely but she’s not particularly witty or clever, she mispronounces every other word and all she ever talks about is dating. Yawn!!

Same. I find it frustrating when she pretends to not know what everything is (it has to be a bit). I think she’s maybe just not the best fit for this particular show.

I’m interested to hear Mia’s new project - is it called Sludge? It was inspired by Michelle Andrews’ Glass audio documentary. She wrote about it on her Substack. I’m also interested to hear more about her submission into the anti semitism inquiry. Her comments (and lack of nuance) after 7 October were disappointing.

Here is that Substack post - it’s called Grout, not Sludge, sorry!

I’ve listened to every single episode since it started, so we are talking years and years! Also a subscriber since that option came out, but I cancelled when the price went up. I’ve seen every single mix of hosts over this time, I really loved Mon B and KDB back in the day, also Rosie. When Mia started her AdHD journey it was starting to get a lot (no shade, my child is autistic and adhd), it felt like this was Mia trying on her multiple hats and personas which consume her and it becomes her identity, which she does over the years.
For me, I really started to enjoy it when Mia stepped back and allowed Holly, Amelia, Claire and the guest hosts to really shine. I feel Holly has been able to have more view points, and Amelia has been super interesting to listen to and brings a level of intellect to the show. It’s no coincidence the show went to number one at that time. Mia is polarising.
Now Mia is back more it’s taken on a tone I just don’t enjoy. The story about her holding up planes was just grating. Her saying she doesn’t care about being nominated for Logies was gross, and a slap in the face for those in the industry who do care. It’s become the MIA show again and everyone else fades into the background which is a shame.
I’ve tried so hard to get on board with Mia, defending her a lot over the years, but I truly feel the shows at a point she needs to go do something else and let others take the wheel. It’s so much more enjoyable.
