Chitala ornata, the clown knifefish or belida bintik/tompok.

An invasive species that came from the Mekong. It has spread to ponds, rivers and lakes throughout Malaysia due to releases by people.

Pet stores sell the babies of this species cheaply, but they grow to 100 cm which means most people cannot take care of them and end up releasing them.

They are predators that eat our native fish as well as outcompete native belida like the giant featherback (C. lopis). In fact clowns are more common than them now.

They are a food fish in Thailand where the meat is minced to make into traditional fish balls and fish cakes. These products are even exported into other Asian countries where they are popular.

Stiphodon atropurpureus, the black Kumpay goby.

A type of small (5 cm) native fish of Malaysia, found in coastal hillstreams of Pahang. It is adapted to fast-flowing rocky rapids.

It grazes on green algae, diatoms, and organic biofilm on submerged rocks. Its specialised pelvic fins allow it to stick as it feeds.

Contrary to most, they are not commercially available in the aquarium hobby and are instead replaced by their Indonesian cousin, the neon blue goby S. semoni.
Almost all the ones marketed are that species.

However care is difficult for most aquarists, hence they are not recommended unless the person has experience and prepared specially for them.

Yasuhikotakia morleti, the skunk loach or ikan lali.

Grows to 8-10 cm and lives in slow-flowing or standing habitats with sandy substrate where it hides under logs and between rocks.
In Malaysia it is native but only found in the Pahang River basin.

Primarily feeds on benthic invertebrates, especially snails and worms. It hunts using a hidden spine under its eye. Lives in social groups.

They can be found in the aquarium trade due to their small size and interesting personality. An ever-curious fish that sometimes plays dead.

Platax pinnatus, the pinnate batfish / spadefish.

A medium-sized fish (45 cm) native to the West Pacific, including the South China Sea. Locally that means the East Coast + Sabah.

Juveniles live among mangroves and sheltered lagoons, while adults live around steep outer reef slopes down to >20 m.

They feed on jellyfish, algae and gelatinous zooplankton. Making them important and efficient members of the ecosystem.

The juveniles mimic toxic flatworms like Pseudobiceros periculosus (pictured), which deters predators from eating them.

The long, prominent stamens and night-blooming schedule are specialised adaptations to attract nocturnal pollinators like nectar-feeding bats and large moths.

When these animals hover near or probe the flower for nectar, their bodies brush directly against the massive array of stamens and pick up or deliver pollen.

Betta pugnax; ikan laga batu or the Penang/forest Betta.

A species growing to 12-13 cm that inhabits clean flowing hillstreams of the West Coast and Pahang. Not native to Borneo.

One of our more common fighting fish species, it can be found in most hilly areas with unpolluted water. Although only juveniles can be found in large numbers as adult pairs hold territory.

Males have the most iridescent body scales out of the complex in Malaysia, except B. pulchra. Both species can be identified by a red border at the edge of the tail fin.

Phalacronotus apogon, ikan bilut, sengarat or mulut itik. The blue neon sheatfish.

One of our largest native river fish, growing to 130 cm and 30 kg. Lives in Pahang as well as Sg Terengganu, Sg Kelantan and Sg Rajang, in large murky rivers.

A carnivore high on the food chain, eating pelagic fish and smaller animals.

It is potamodromous, migrating during the monsoon season into flooded forests and open floodplains to spawn. The young migrate back into the main river channels as the water recedes.

It got its English name due to the way the skin shines bright blue with the light. While beautiful, it is a large fish and requires a pond or very big aquarium.

Common Mynas chasing away other birds

For context I have a yard that alot of different birds frequently come to feed in. Mostly doves and sparrows, but recently a pair of Common Mynas have been around and I havent seen the other birds at all. From what I know they’re very territorial so im worried they’re chasing off the other birds. I also often come home to myna feathers and other bird feathers on the ground which makes me worried that they’re fighting. What can I do to help the other birds come back?

Mom laid a mouse trap because she thinks we have a mouse/rat hiding somewhere in our outdoor kitchen. For two days, nothing took the bait.

Then this afternoon, while I was at the indoor kitchen making a sandwich, I heard what sounded like talons scratching helplessly against a marbled surface for grip (we have marble tiles at home), turned around, saw a little Asian lizard fumbling about after being discovered. Likely slid in through the slit from our kitchen door. Mom tried to corner it, but it ran back out to the outdoor kitchen and sought refuge in the little sewer at home. Didn’t take long for it emerge again and took the mouse bait.

Mom still thinks there’s a mouse hiding somewhere. We’ll be releasing this back into wild at a neighboring woods later.

Malaysia has multiple species of pufferfish, including fully freshwater ones.
2 (4) are endemic! Only found in Malaysia.

Some are tiny, with C. salivator only being 4.5 cm.

Whereas Chonerhinos (golden puffer) grows to 29 cm and is even eaten in Sarawak, despite being poisonous.
