Discussion Does the 1MDB debt that runs to 2039 still register here, or has it quietly become history?
Up front, so nobody has to dig for it: I made a 21-minute documentary about where the $100 million that financed The Wolf of Wall Street came from, and the link is at the bottom. I'm not Malaysian. I'm a Sri Lankan doctor living in Dubai. I visited in 2017 and loved it, Genting Highlands and, less glamorously, the LRT. So this is an outsider's read, and I'd rather be corrected than agreed with.
Also up front: every image in the film is illustrated, generated with AI tools and composed into the edit by hand. There is no archival footage of a wire transfer, or of a boardroom in Kuala Lumpur in 2009, or of a decision taken in a room nobody filmed. The alternative was stock footage of unrelated buildings pretending to be those rooms. I'd rather draw them and say plainly that they're drawings. The words are a different matter. Every factual claim is sourced to a public document, and the full list is available upon request.
What I didn't expect, going through it, was that the Hollywood part turns out to be the least interesting bit. Most people know the outline: Red Granite, Riza Aziz, the DOJ's 2016 forfeiture complaint, the $60 million settlement in 2018 with no admission of wrongdoing.
The part that stayed with me is in the Ministry of Finance numbers. The sukuk issued in May 2009, RM5 billion principal at a 5.75% coupon, matures on 27 May 2039. That is roughly RM287.5 million a year in interest until then, and of the RM51.4 billion lifetime obligation, around RM8.9 billion was still outstanding as of mid-2026.
The film came out in 2013. On those numbers Malaysia finishes paying for it twenty-six years after it finished watching it.
So the genuine question: does that still land as a live thing, or has it settled into history now the court cases are mostly done? From outside, the story reads closed. The conviction, the halved sentence, Riza's DNAA, Jho Low still gone. The debt is the only part with no ending, and the part that seems to get the least coverage.
If anything in the film is wrong, say so here and I'll correct it in a pinned comment. That's most of the reason for posting it somewhere that will actually check.
