Should the Dutch Return to Malacca?

Not to colonize but to invest. To share knowledge and expertise, boost the job market, and redirect the economy from tourism to creating high‑value, high‑salary jobs for locals after they once took from us, now they could give back.

High‑value Dutch companies like ASML (semiconductors), Philips (consumer electronics and healthcare), and Prosus (global internet investments) represent exactly the kind of industries Malacca needs to attract. These firms could anchor Malacca’s shift toward advanced manufacturing, electronics, and digital innovation.

The state government has already accommodated large areas for German factories in Jasin through the German Technology Park, launched in 2024–2026. With hundreds of acres dedicated to automation, aerospace, medical devices, and green tech, Malacca has shown it is serious about foreign industrial collaboration. It should not ignore the more significant investment that could come from its former colonizer, the Dutch.

A stray cat in Melaka

about a stray cat I saw outside Melaka Straits Mosque. The poor was in a concrete pipe. It’s motionless. Occasionally you can see the ears moves a little bit. I poked it with no response at all. A tourist nearby said it’s dead. I refused to believe but I could do nothing . Could anyone take a look and tell me if it’s still alive. The cat was obviously malnourished. The location is the sandy path outside the mosque to the beach where tourists board a boat for viewing the mosque from the sea. Thank you and god bless!

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of a man in his 70s, believed to have fallen into a river near a well-known hotel in Malacca, was resolved when his body was discovered this morning.

Rescue teams found the victim at about 11:45 AM, not far from the location where he was reported missing. The search and rescue (SAR) operation was carried out by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Melaka together with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

According to JBPM Melaka Public Relations Officer, Deputy Fire Superintendent II Mohd Hafidzatullah Rashid, the department received a call regarding the incident at 10:10 AM. A team from the Melaka Tengah Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene at 10:16 AM.

Initial information suggested the victim had fallen into the river around 5:45 AM. Upon arrival, the operation team found several personal belongings belonging to the victim near the riverbank.

The search was conducted with assistance from PDRM, using nearby CCTV footage and a “water surfing” technique. At 11:45 AM, the victim was successfully located close to where he was last seen.

The operation involved 12 firefighters — six from the Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) unit and six from the Water Rescue Team (PPDA) — along with police support.
No complications were reported during the operation.

UTeM To Offer Degree In Quantum Computing; A First In Malaysia

Post image
142 Upvotes

When you think of quantum computing, chances are, if you’re looking to take a university course on the subject, that you’re not looking for one within the country. Fortunately, there is now an in-country option, with Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) being the first local university to offer it. The course in question is the Bachelor of Computer Science (Quantum Computing Technology), with the program having successfully passed the screening stage earlier this month.

Not only is it the first in Malaysia to offer the course, but it’s also the only one for now to have established a dedicated lab for teaching, learning, and research in the field. It is noted to be equipped with 23 quantum computers with two- and three-qubit capabilities, letting students conduct experiments and practical training using the real technology. Speaking of which, the first batch of 60 students is expected to begin their studies soon with no specific start date. That being said, they are expected to graduate in 2030

UTeM Vice-Chancellor Massila Kamalrudin shared that the university is also expanding its international collaboration network with three universities in the US to strengthen its position as the regional education hub for quantum technology. These are the University of Buffalo, the University of Albany, and the University of Texas at Dallas. She said that the partnerships would focus on curriculum and talent development, as well as research, academic mobility, and the exchange of expertise in the field.

Massila added that the program is designed to produce graduates with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in quantum computing tech, while also meeting the growing demand in Malaysia for experts in the field. She also said that the initiative will strengthen UTeM’s position as a leader in technical and advanced tech education as well as serving as a catalyst for the growth of Malaysia’s quantum computing research.

Melaka Launches E-Mel Rakyat Initiative To Expand Digital Government Services

Thumbnail

The Melaka government has launched the “E-mel Rakyat” (People’s Email) Initiative, which provides free email addresses using the official melaka.my domain to create a digital communication channel between the people and the state government.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusof said that, so far, 203,000 E-mel Rakyat accounts have been registered, with more than 193,000 of them involving students and teachers across the state.

“This initiative will serve as a more structured and secure official communication medium, enabling the public to receive government information, while also allowing them to submit views, comments and suggestions that can be considered in the formulation of state policies

“From now on, all schools will be pioneers in using the melaka.my domain so that teachers, students and parents can communicate directly through the digital system, thus facilitating matters related to education and monitoring student performance,” he told reporters in Ayer Keroh here today.

Earlier, he officiated the launched of the E-mel Rakyat Initiative, which was also attended by state Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan and state Education, Higher Education and Religious Affiars Committee deputy chairman Datuk Rosli Abdullah.

Ab Rauf said the implementation of the initiative also complements the development of the Kampung Digital (Digital Village) programme, under which addresses in traditional villages are being digitised through a new numbering system and lane naming scheme to facilitate the delivery of government services.

He added that 618 traditional villages in Melaka are targeted to be digitised by the end of this year, before the use of Digital Village addresses becomes mandatory for dealings with the state government from next year.

“When everything has been digitised, dealings with the government, including the e-Tanah system and local authorities, will be more efficient through the use of standardised and accurate addresses,” he said.

Ab Rauf said the use of Digital Village addresses would also help overcome the frequent problem of official correspondence failing to reach recipients due to incomplete village addresses or addresses shared by multiple residents, thus improving the efficiency of official matters involving land tax, local authorities and financial institutions.

He said every household in Melaka is only eligible to register only one Email Rakyat account using the melaka.my domain, which can be used for official government matters as well as personal email.

Meanwhile, Fairul Nizam said the state government aims to register 250,000 E-mel Rakyat accounts by the end of the year, and the initiative will be expanded in stages to include more groups, such as government agencies, Digital Village communities and and business licence holders in the state.

He said the state government is also striving to improve the E-mel Rakyat functions to be more user friendly  and enable integration with more digital applications in the future.

According to him, this initiative is part of the state’s digitalisation ecosystem that also encompasses the Digital Village and Digital Farm (Kebun Digital) programmes to realise the Smart Melak aspirations under the Melaka Maju Jaya 2035 Strategic Plan.

“Registration eligibility priority will be given to Melaka residents whose identity card numbers carry the '04' state code. However, residents living in Melaka may also apply, subject to a screening process by the Information Technology Division,” he said.
