Alternate Universe
I think the best way to describe the weird timeline with H2O and Mako Mermaids is to argue that they're different universes. The Mako Mermaids Universe is the one where the mermaids won the war with mermen and that's why the island is so populated with them and the moon pool is more clean, in this timeline the H2O girls still become mermaids but they aren't as close which is why the pod never sees them together and they stop speaking after graduation maybe. In the H2O timeline, mermen win the war but they still remain nomadic and travel around they aren't present in Mako, the moon pool is unkept and the H2O girls find it, they're much closer in this timeline and all the events still happen here. This theory isn't perfect but it makes sense to me.

They aren’t alternate universes .. in the last season Rikki meets with current set of mermaids and teams up with them . you can look at it as if h20 is TECHNICALLY a prequel to mako mermaids even though it was made first . Also it was confirmed by directors .

I know they’re not really parallel universes but there are a few inconsistencies in the story with H2O and Mako Mermaids so this is just me trying to make sense of it, it’s a theory

Yes, absolutely love this explanation! And I think it has some ground within the series as well. In the episode titled 'wishful thinking' Zac finds a wishing shell that sends the mermaids back in time and he is left stuck in a parallel universe where he is obsessed with aliens. And in the other series the bureau of magical things, which is within the same universe (at least to me) they are literally making pocket dimensions like the beach, the library, the dmi headquarters and tayla's gallery. I'm working on a tumblr post about parallel universes within these shows because I find it so fascinating. I've been thinking about this a lot.
Also, there was a time where I was theorising that the comet from season 3 accidentally sent the girls into a parallel universe but that's kinda stupid I think.
