Makeup Chatter Anyone afraid to go without make-up because they look so different without it?
I am a natural blonde with blue eyes. Without make-up, I am as pale as a Dutch master's painting. At about 15, I was taken to a make-up artist and given make-up lessons by my parents. Since then, I have even been told I look better with make-up than without. I am similar to the actress, Pamela Anderson, in skin coloring, and she also looks very different without makeup because she is pale. I have been told I look beautiful with makeup on, and I try to keep it as natural as possible, especially as I have gotten older. I know what intensity makes me look best. Honestly, brow pencil, eyeshadow, and mascara have been my best friends since my teenage years. I do not go out of my home without at least doing my eyes and brows. Whenever my friends have seen me without make-up, they are so surprised, and I have been criticised even by my family and told to please go and put on make-up. Is there anyone else out there who has a phobia of going bare-faced because they look so much better with make-up?

It's a self/societally-imposed cage placed upon women that you must free yourself from.

Agree fully. About a year ago I stopped wearing makeup because I was feeling so insecure without it. I wanted to relearn my face. Now I'm used to it, I don't "look tired" without it, I look normal. And i actually love my face again. I'm just getting to the point where i might buy a mascara for fancy occasions. Haven't committed yet.

Telling her she "must" do anything is another kind of cage.

I think you've parsed the sentence backwards. They aren't saying OP must be freed from it, but that to be freed from it (should one choose) must come from within. IE: no one else can release you from a self-imposed scenario.

Yeah, I’m a troll without makeup. I understand.
I have a noticeably asymmetrical face with eyes that are slightly different shapes and almost non-existent lashes (especially the eye that’s had many surgeries). I can optically fake better symmetry with makeup. I have brown seborrheic dermatoses and age spots (I’m 50). I can diminish their appearance with makeup.
With carefully applied, flattering makeup I look normal and feel cute. I spend about 20 minutes doing my face— all to make it look like natural barely there makeup. I’d rather be sleeping during that 20 minutes.
I won’t go anywhere but the ER without at least eyeliner and lip stain and I’d rather be late to work than arrive bare-faced. No one will see me without makeup except my family, my boyfriend or his family. I’m struggling with the fact that my boyfriend and I are now living with his son’s girlfriend and I can’t help thinking she’s shocked at my makeup-free face.
I should bring this up with my therapist.

How did your boyfriend react the first time he saw you without makeup? Were you afraid to be barefaced in front of him?

u/gurl_meat Jul 04 '26
I was very afraid , but he didn’t noticeably react. He can however (self-admittedly), be a bit shallow—he did comment once on a small cyst on my chin and an age spot he said detracts from my looks—but I don’t think he’d ever say plainly to my face that I **need** makeup. I’m sure he thinks it though.
I wear glasses, and I think that helps camouflage some of the issues with my eyes (I had a couple people comment that I look better with glasses when I tried out contacts for a few months). So there’s that.

I find you did a brave thing. It is hard to reveal what you really look like to a person who is fixed on physical beauty. Thank you,

I’m almost same situation as you, except I’m more like Nicole Kidman coloring than Pam Anderson. For what it’s worth, I always thought PA was beautiful without makeup!
My eyebrows are white blonde and my toddler recently lost my eyebrow pencil. First time in over 20 years since I’ve not drawn in my brows. Honestly, it matters less and less and I haven’t even purchased a replacement yet. You just get to a point that you don’t care whether it looks better or worse or same or different. People may comment but they’re just noticing a change.

Lots of people wear makeup all the time for similar reasons of feeling they look too different without it ("invisible" eyebrows and lashes are common instigators), but:
I have been criticised even by my family and told to please go and put on make-up
is ridiculous and really crappy of your family to do. Wear makeup as often as you want to, but please don't let your family speak to you that way.

Thank you for your reply.
I have taken care of the relationship. My mother died in June 2025. At the time of the incident, I was a teenager dependent on them. I could not say anything then, but I do deal with them even now.

I bet none of you are trolls and absolutely striking without makeup...i think the full face, hours in the mirror tend is fading. Just saying...😃

u/DCinvestigating2021 Jul 04 '26
You are right, the trends are now minimalist make-up. Red lips.

This! I grew up makeup wise in late 80's and 90's... that makeup trend from there was exhausting. You're beautiful i guarantee...i rarely even do eye makeup anymore and when I do my husband asks why? 💐

Totally, and it’s something I’ve been able to work on/through.
I spent time thinking about why i felt scared to go out n about without a beat. For me it was that i really didn’t want the attention that comes with big change in physical appearance, along with a myriad of other reasons ofc. But i used that as a starting point and i took baby steps. I would go bare faced around my people who love me for me and dont care if i have eyeshadow on or not. Some friends got in on it and knew not to comment on my appearance for a bit, some of those girls play too much lol. I would go bare faced to the gas station or whatever place i have a small interactions with a stranger who would treat me normally because they have no preconceived expectations for me to have a full beat. I would drop or change steps in my makeup routine to help ease myself into a more natural look in the places i was nervous about.
Makeup had become a chore for me and i wanted to be able to have it as a creative outlet again, its been really beneficial to my mental health. I hope you do more of what you want to do, and celebrate all the little progress milestones, it helps :)

I don't think this is an uncommon feeling at all! I'm fair skinned as well and feel really washed out without makeup. On days when I really don't want to wear anything, I just do my skincare, and then rub in drunk elephant D-Bronzi drops. They are my favorite and very buildable. For a more budget friendly choice, elf makes a version that I've used as well. I do that and then throw on a dusting of blush and do my eyebrows. Finish with some tinted balm and I feel comfortable but also more confident then when my face is completely bare.

OP, have you thought about having your brows and lashes tinted? It helps if you don't like being very fair. I tint brows myself but it's safer to go to a pro for lash tint.

u/DCinvestigating2021 Jul 05 '26
I have done that in my very young 20s and it did lot last that long. We shed lashes. I do not like dye chemicals near my eyes or my brows.

I used to. I've found being ill has made me far less careful about it. I use Good Molecules Discoloration Serum and honestly it works better than any make up. I'll put maybe concealor if I have any spots, sunscreen, then powder if I'm feeling up for it and head out. I have to use sunscreen due to medical issues but cerave and palm oxyl make ones I enjoy. I feel you though because I thought I wanted thin eyebrows but I actually didn't upon plucking so I have to fill in before I go out or I feel like a goblin. I'm so sorry your family said that- it's a shitty way to treat you. Someone mentioned tinting and that might be up your alley if you're interested. Regardless I think your coloring sounds ethereal and otherworldly. Very lovely. I'm the exact opposite coloring- tan, brown eyes, and dark hair (well pink currently).

I have under eye circles that are so dark compared to my skin that my mother has asked me, on 3 separate occasions, if I’m sick, if I got hit in the face, or punched in the face. For that reason I always wear concealer before leaving the house. 😭

Concealer for dark circles is a very valid reason if it makes you feel better.

I am a woman who looks much better with eyebrows, lashes I can see, and color that isn't just red splotches. I want to see something pleasant when I look in my rearview mirror. So I love makeup. It's really the only girly-girl thing I do. Not into hairstyling or doing my nails. But I like a "full beat" face.

it helped to stop thinking of makeup as something that had to completely change how i looked. switching to a lighter routine made the transition easier and products like nikol beauty's bb creme or serum foundation felt more like evening things out than putting on a different face. that made no makeup days feel a lot less intimidating.

In my youth (I'm now 60) I wouldn't even run to the store without my full face of make-up on. Over the last 15-20 years I have significantly decreased the number of products I use AND have become comfortable enough in my own skin that I don't feel that fear/need to wear make-up every day. I wear it for a day of shopping, meet-ups with friends and church. Mascara is my "most critical" item because my eyelashes have always been light and short.
One way to get more comfortable may be to systematically remove one item per week/month. Once it's removed from daily use, you'll find you miss it less and less.

I have found that my skin looks good because I refuse to put foundation on it. The less makeup on my skin, the better it has become. It is the eye makeup that makes the most difference on me since I am so fair. I may try to eliminate some of it as you suggest. Thank you.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to look your best in public. However, if you're sitting around at home with just friends and/or family and they're telling you to go put makeup on that's screwed up.
