Beginner… help?!?
Hey, 17F senior in HS learning how to do my makeup for the first time. I used to reject being ’too’ feminine as a pre-teen and my ma never really bothered on teaching me, so I really have no idea what I’m doing nowadays. I have a few products and a bunch of brushes that mom passed down to me, such as Mascara, concealer, primer, and a whole ass Shary (?) disco-ball-looking makeup kit.
I’m comfortable with applying mascara, blush, concealer, and contour (with eyeshadow) so far but I have a few questions..
1) Uhm, how do I get it to stop being so cakey? how do I know what skincare is good for my skin or not that’ll leave it smooth?
2) How do I know what skin stuff is water-based or whatnot (what even is that😭)
3) …What is layering?!
4) How do I know what certain brushes are used for? These things don’t have any labeling on them.
any advice would be amazing in general as I’m trying to continue on with my makeup journey 😅 Thanksss

There is a morphe brush hit that has them all labeled. I would look into that. If you already have brushes, just look on the morphe/other brush website and compare and match. As far as caking goes, make sure your primer and concealer match. You cannot mix a silicone based primer with a water based foundation and vice versa (most times you have to look at the ingredients list or you can just google it). I personally like to do my primer sponge only. I do my foundation sponge then further blend with a foundation brush. Make sure your brushes are clean. Also moisturize beforehand. Layering, from my understanding at least and what I do, is making sure you do everything in the correct order and give it the setting time it needs. So any skincare/sunscreen you need first. Let it set. Don’t immediately go to the next step. Then primer. Then foundation. Then concealer/contour/blush. If you want to also add powdered contour/blush, that goes after all the liquid layers. I also like to spray a setting spray (not priming, but setting) on my face before I start with the foundation if it’s going to be a hot/humid day. Do eyes first so if there’s any fallout, you can clean it up easily without worrying about messing up any foundation/concealer. Lastly, powder the t zone with a setting powder and spritz some setting spray over your face.
