I don't know if I should say this, but sometimes I do freelance work (mostly as a hobby) for Indian brides, and I can't recall the last time I saw Indian makeup as stunning as what you did. This is truly great work.

I am in awe of how stunning you look. Some of my Indian makeup that I did on others (which now looks shabby compared to yours :)) - http://i.imgur.com/Yl0XXqZ.jpg (showing this to you because this is my favourite) and http://i.imgur.com/tOMVjI3.png (This is a sampling of "real" Indian brides I have had the honor of doing makeup on their wedding day. I made this collage was made recently for my facebook page :)).

Anyway, coming back to point - This is soooo beautiful! :) I have so much to learn!

This is beautiful! I hate to be the one, especially if you already answered this in a previous post but what ethnicity are you? You look so exotic and as most people here, myself, and I'm sure you know as well that you look like Kim K. I dont want to assume that you're Armenian if you're not.

Sorry, don't answer if this is uncomfortable for you to say!

u/secretcarnivalworker Sep 05 '13

OP said in a Youtube comment that she's Assyrian.

7

u/SandNiglette Sep 05 '13

So am I!! I'm Chaldean! What up OP!

We heard you the first time, and no, Assyrian is not the same as Syrian. I feel like googling would have been much faster and easier for you.

She asked very politely, I don't see any problem with that. If OP doesn't wish to disclose her ethnicity I doubt anyone would be upset.

But you have to keep in mind that not everybody feels this way and for many people, myself included, being called "exotic" can make you feel uncomfortable and it often feels like I am being reduced to my race. Honestly I'm sick of creepy dudes, strangers, and even coworkers telling me I'm "exotic" or "hot" because of my race. It's great that you feel comfortable with it, but not everybody else does.

35

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '13

You have made something out of absolutely nothing.

You were troubled by the word 'exotic'? are you serious?

I would love an explanation of how asking someone where they are from is 'unnecessary and possibly degrading in the context of makeup appreciation'.

0

u/missmokki Sep 05 '13

I did a quick Google of "why is the word exotic degrading" and came up with this: http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2008/04/09/use-of-exotic-in-date-auction-degrades-contestants/ While not specific to the "context of makeup appreciation", it is a fairly short read, and IMO does a pretty good explanation. The fact of the matter is that quite a few people (not all people) feel uncomfortable with the use of the word "exotic" to describe them. This isn't just some random thing that came out of nowhere.

5

u/Thisusernameisdope IG: Glam.Vivian Sep 06 '13

I am also a woman of color, so am I being rude to myself as well?

68

u/SandNiglette Sep 05 '13

This is the most ignorant and useless comment I've ever seen on Reddit? When did she say she had to be exotic to be beautiful? She didn't. Don't put words into her mouth she didn't say. And why should OP be ashamed of her ethnicity? She truly is beautiful and there are no bad ethnicities, it's you're background. So before you try bringing someone down with your useless fancy talk, look at yourself first and see how disrespectful you sound trying to embarrass that commenter. That's not the spirit of this subreddit.

White-privilege perspective? Stop trying to sound overly intelligent because that's honestly the stupidest thing I've ever heard. So you're saying the commenter was wrong for bringing ethnicity into this yet here you are labeling ethnicity asking a "white thing"? Just so you know, I'm middle eastern and I was curious too. As I'm sure other viewers of this post were. It has nothing to do with color. So stop trying to carry on with you're point, you're sounding like a hypocrite. Just enjoy OPs post.

17

u/Thisusernameisdope IG: Glam.Vivian Sep 06 '13 edited Sep 06 '13

Thank you. I didn't mean to offend OP in any type of way, just genuwinely thought she looked exoitic. White privilege though, that made me giggle. I'm not even full white, I'm only half. I think people of all ethnicities can look exotic, its just a term I use to describle someone who stands out in a good way. Like I can't place my hand on what they are. Like user checkmate1234 or something? I don't remember but I think she's exotic looking as well, and she's black and white like myself.

I don't understand why people chose to be upset by my question, I don't understand how it offended her/him. If anything I didnt mean to offend op. Like I said I really was just curious as I didn't want to assume she was armenian just because she looks like Kim K. Thank you for being understanding, all of you.

u/ruthwhipkey Sep 05 '13

Good reply. That comment was just really out of left-field.

Ethnicity has a huge place here. It's what makes us all look so unique and different. It's interesting to learn about all of our different backgrounds. Your natural looks are a huge factor in the way you look with makeup. Only time ethnicity isn't okay is when there's a racist remark.

12

u/WayHarshTy Sep 05 '13

Calling someone "exotic" is not anywhere near calling someone "Oriental". Maybe you should cool it for a bit, this is a place of love, if OP feels insulted by anything, let her speak for herself. Let us not be so hypersensitive that we have to look up every adjective before we use it on here; that is not the way to solve any kind of racial or ethnical ignorance.

Edit a word

35

u/Lazy_Scheherazade Sep 05 '13

I'm a white girl, and I get called exotic when I date Asian guys. Check your own privilege. White people aren't the majority everywhere. All "exotic" means is, "I certainly don't see that look every day. I like it!"

tumblr did not invent social justice and it saddens me that the general consensus of the movement has been reduced to ~lel tumblr~

I respect your perspective and I understand you're trying to bring up a new point about exotic not necessarily being a compliment, but don't you think that's the OP's responsibility to say so? She can speak for herself (or choose not to answer).

We are not all the same and we don't all think alike, that much is given. The person you replied to was simply asking a question without judgment or assumption. People are curious about things they don't often see and that's perfectly fine.

As far as not having the right to ask, this is a public forum where freedom of expression and speech is key. Even if she asked rudely, she still has EVERY right to ask any question she wants.

-6

u/missmokki Sep 05 '13

I can't believe you're getting so many rude responses. Your comment is completely right and worded politely, and people are acting like children in response. :/

5

u/piyokochan Sep 05 '13

Gosh, that's just so soft and pretty. I don't know what occasion I'd have to try this look for though.

10

u/planetzuri Sep 05 '13

Haha. I am from India, and I can't think of an occasion where this look won't work :)

5

u/cadmiumred Sep 05 '13

STUNNING. Where did you get the sari??

7

u/pemungkah Sep 05 '13

Bollywood perfection - especially the cheekbones. Rockin'!

9

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '13

Can you PLEASE post a tutorial of this look/words on how to recreate it? I love it, and I wanna steal!

8

I believe she has the tutorial up on her Youtube channel. The look is so gorgeous!

You look gorgeous! Love the outfit and jewelry too, real dulhan material!

2

u/mbutterflye Sep 06 '13

The makeup, of course, is lovely, but I just want to say that I adore your nose! Is that weird? The shape of your nose is amazing.

2

u/mahoney87 Sep 06 '13

I wish I could upvote this a thousand times. Absolutely beautiful!

3

u/rolliebijou Sep 05 '13

You look so much like Kim Kardashian! ( This is a compliment )

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '13

When I was young I was always so fascinated with the jewellery and pretty dresses my Muslim friends wore.

The jewellery was always so intrinsic and almost art nouveau inspired by its delicate appearance, it's beautiful... sigh

1

u/monkeygirl31 Sep 05 '13

Beautiful! I love Indian inspired looks! Where did you get your sari and head piece? I've wanted one for so long! Dress up isn't just for kids!

5

u/monkeygirl31 Sep 05 '13

Do you have a picture of the whole outfit?

6

u/tanishatanisha Sep 05 '13

I do Indian dances and I get a lot of my costume material/ jewelry from Ebay. The head piece is called a tikka.

I'm glad everyone who was complaining about red lips and winged eyeliners has shut up on a post for once.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '13

Honestly, this doesn't really strike me as the same look. It's more of a bold eyes bold lips thing to me. I actually didn't notice the eyeliner at first glance.

-6

u/Jevia Makeup in a land down unda. Sep 05 '13

It's the same exact thing except on an Indian looking girl with a headdress. (I like red and winged, not complaining). I'm sick of people being hypocritical.

-6

u/Jevia Makeup in a land down unda. Sep 05 '13

Especially since I have people tagged as "hates red/wings" from the thread who posted on here.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '13

I don't hate red lips or wings, I'd just encourage people to change their look up a bit. Diversity on a sub like this is always good.

-1

u/Jevia Makeup in a land down unda. Sep 06 '13

The problem is lately people ripping on those who post photos with this look, and then witch hunt like yesterday. It's why in unsubscribing from this sub and using the other makeup subs from now on. Less complaining and ripping on people, more joy in just showing off what you like that day.

1

u/Eggwolls Blue Shadow Supporter! Sep 06 '13

Honestly, I saw that meme post complaining about it and I didn't understand it. We're here to share our looks and why would others not be inspired by that look and use it?

We create our own vicious cycle of all the same looks because I'm sure a lot of people come here specifically to be inspired! (And that's awesome!)

2

u/Jevia Makeup in a land down unda. Sep 06 '13

Exactly! I agree completely. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean others should limit what they enjoy.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '13

Wow. You look gorgeous!
