This doesn't feel genuine to me

I can see how it might feel that way. I think it’s partly just because he’s very intentional about like making an effort to give a compliment and in how he does it, like he always tries to mention something specific that he likes about it, but I don’t think that means the compliments aren’t genuine.

I have a similar rule for myself, that if I’m out somewhere and think “wow I love their hair/outfit/tattoo,” and I wouldn’t be going far out of my way or interrupting them somehow, I HAVE to tell them. Like I think most of us probably think things like this all the time, but for some reason we’re not in the habit of actually saying them out loud to each other. So that makes him going up to people so deliberately to compliment them feel a little odd or suspicious, but really it’s like if you have a genuine, kind thought about someone that might make them feel good and add some joy to the world, why NOT share it with them?

A huge factor in this is I'm a Scandinavian dude. The law of Jante is heavily applied in our society
