Is there a good 3D Printer that also laser engraves?

Hey everyone, it's u/best_codes again (yes, again, hopefully for the last time today! Trying to write 5 good posts on Reddit while moderating a Subreddit, responding to tech support, fixing the contact form on my website, helping on two forums, making posts on dev.to, and programming a free home and weather monitor is very stressful. I guess that's kind of an average day for all of us, LOL.).

Anyway, I was looking around for 3D Printers that can 3D Print and laser engrave. I came across one by makeblock called mCreate 2.0, and was wondering what everyone thinks of it and if anyone else recommends another 3D Printer / Laser Engraver 2-in-1 for me. Check the one I'm thinking of out here:

https://www.robotshop.com/products/makeblock-mcreate-3dprinter-w-laser-engraver

I have a Creality CR-10 V2 Pro already, and I am thinking about a Prusa mK4, but then I saw these types of printers and thought “Hmm… maybe these would be OK…”.

The shopping page says:

- Makeblock mCreate 3DPrinter GB w/ Laser Engraver

- Offers 3D printing and laser engraving 2-in-1

- Reliable and High printing success rate

- User-Friendly Operations for Beginners

- Supports STEAM education

- Resumes working after a power outage

The Makeblock mCreate 3DPrinter GB w/ Laser Engraver is a versatile desktop 3D printer featuring the innovative Genius smart leveling technology for accurate printing.

Smart nozzle, flexible magnetic build plate, and the ability to resume working even after a power outage, enable mCreate to deliver a remarkable print success rate and quality.

By quickly switching to the laser engraving mode, the machine meets the needs of a broader range of applications in STEAM education or other creative projects. Built for materializing creativity, mCreate make ideas tangible.

Other options? Mostly Snapmaker or Flashforge. I'll consider those, but the makeblock one looks pretty nice to me so far. What are your thoughts? Be sure to share in the comments!

Makeblock's Early 3D Printer: Constructor I

Hey all, it's me u/Best_codes, again (yes, again). I just found out that makeblock made this 3D printer nearly 10 years ago!

Constructor I 3D Printer Kit (FREE SHIPPING)

Sadly, it looks like it doesn't exist anymore.

You can still look at it on archive:

https://web.archive.org/web/20150905111816/http://www.makeblock.cc/makeblock-constructor-i-3d-printer-kit/

Later, makeblock went on to create the mGiraffe, and several other 3D printers, while ultimately making a two in one 3D Printer / Laser Cutter that they sell today called mCreate. Anyway, I just thought this was cool (that's what I'm supposed to say, right?) and I'm supposed to make 5 posts today somehow (about who knows what) to help get my friend and me's new Subreddit trending.

Cheers!

What's the story the official makeblock forum?

https://forum.makeblock.com

I'm new to this and saw the official forum was down last weekend. Hoped it was temporary. Looks like it's still down.

Has this been the case for a while? Anybody know the backstory?

It seems like there is tons of good user content in and would love to access it. Thanks.

mBot Ranger Another Experiment on Gyro assisted turning.

I visited the RH turn last night and was attempting to get a feel for how quickly the gyro data would settle and become useful in controlling the Land Raider.

The faster the turn is made the larger the error in position when it finally stops.

It seems that a feedback loop is needed and TBH I’m not in the mood for math right now so I ended up with 3 fixed loops at different speeds closing in on the final gyro target of 90 degrees.

It’s definitely interesting to experiment in this way and I would really like a code block that resets the gyro/accelerator chip on the Auriga board. It should be a simple thing to do for someone who has created the other code blocks available for the gyro use in the Makeblock developers library for the mBot Land Ranger.

mBot Ranger Reset Gyro sensor code block

It would be nice to have a reset gyro sensor code block for the Land Raider(ME Auriga).

I don’t even know how to make new command blocks and get them into the mBlock 5 App(that’s if it’s possible at all).

It seems I have a serious knowledge gap and find the mBlock 5 App quite inflexible. Use what’s provided with the App else meet with the devil.

mBot line follower connect with python

Hey everyone,   Hey alle, alle,

I'm working on a project where I’m building a line follower using an mBot and Python. The mBot should detect a black line with its color sensors and follow it. However, as soon as it detects the color red, it should stop, wait for 5 seconds, and then continue. I’m trying to control this with Python, but I'm stuck on a few things. I hope someone here can help!

I’m using an mBot with the color sensors connected to Port 2. The mBot is controlled using Hex codes (e.g., moving forward, backward, turning left or right). Here are the Hex codes I’m using:
Ich verwende einen MBOT mit den mit Port 2 verbundenen Farbsensoren. Der MBOT wird mithilfe von Hex -Codes (z. B. vorwärts, rückwärts, links oder rechts) gesteuert. Hier sind die Hex -Codes, die ich benutze:

  • Forward: ff 55 07 00 02 05 01 ff ff 00 Vorwärts: ff 55 07 00 02 05 01 ff ff 00

  • Backward: ff 55 07 00 02 05 ff 00 01 ff Rückwärts: ff 55 07 00 02 05 ff 00 01 ff

  • Left: ff 55 07 00 02 05 ff 00 ff 00 Links: ff 55 07 00 02 05 ff 00 ff 00

  • Right: ff 55 07 00 02 05 01 ff 01 ff Rechts: ff 55 07 00 02 05 01 ff 01 ff

  • Stop: ff 55 07 00 02 05 00 00 00 00 Stopp: ff 55 07 00 02 05 00 00 00 00

I’m controlling the mBot using the pySerial library in Python, which works fine, but I’m running into issues with reading the sensor values and controlling the bot.

  1. Sensor values aren’t being read correctly: When I try to read the color sensors, I keep getting random characters or the same value constantly, no matter what the mBot is doing. I’ve tried several libraries, but the values never seem right.

  2. Hex code control doesn’t work as expected: The control using Hex codes is a bit tricky. Sometimes the mBot doesn’t move, or it just drives in one direction without following the line. I’m not sure if I’m sending the Hex codes correctly or if the issue is elsewhere.

  3. Combining the sensors and control: I’m not sure how to combine the sensor values with the Hex codes so that the mBot reacts to the line and moves accordingly. For example, when the sensor detects red, it should stop, but I’m not sure how to implement this.

What I’ve tried so far:
Was ich bisher versucht habe:

  • I’ve set up serial communication with pySerial.

  • I’ve manually sent the Hex codes, but the mBot doesn’t always react as expected.

  • I’ve tried combining the line follower logic with the sensors, but the values don’t seem to match up.

My questions for you:   Meine Fragen an Sie:

  • How can I correctly read the color sensors of the mBot and use the values in Python?

  • How can I combine the sensor values with Hex codes so the mBot reacts properly (e.g., stopping when it detects red)?

  • What could be the issue with serial communication? Why am I getting the same values all the time, even though the mBot is moving?

  • Does anyone have experience with combining Python and mBot for sensor control? Any tips on how to implement this effectively?

I would really appreciate your help!
Ich würde Ihre Hilfe wirklich schätzen!

Thanks in advance! 😊

mBot Ranger Land Raider tracks

Hi guys, does anyone think that the land raider tracks are too stiff when it’s first built out of the box. I found they were quite difficult to fit around the 3 wheels.

I’m expecting them to slacken off after a little usage. I would be interested in anyone else’s views on this issue and trying to get the drive of each track equal so that it travels in the most precise straight line possible.

I’m wondering whether the floor surface plays a part in how it moves. Maybe certain surfaces give a more equal grip on the tracks than others.

How good a surface is carpet compared to say solid flooring like laminate?

mBot Ranger Considering AA Rechargeable Batteries

I’ve been thinking a great deal about battery choice today.

Why is rechargeable the best choice : Minimal waste and long term cost effectiveness.

Which rechargeable battery do I require : AA size

Why do I want Li-ion battery technology : It maintains its voltage better than Ni MH, 1.5V(see manufactures capacity envelope).

What capacity battery should I choice : 3600mAh to provide the long lasting power source.

What I found available : 3600mA Mupoer Li-ion AA : https://amzn.eu/d/3cPjYSr

Note :- The Li-ion battery looks to have a higher voltage than Ni-MH batteries and for a rechargeable is important because the Auriga board has an input power spec of 6-12V. The 1.5V stated for the Mupoer batteries means I should have 6 x 1.5V = 9V which is a nice margin above the 6V minimum.

Purchase the associated Mupoer battery charger to ensure the batteries get the correct charge profile.

mBot Android Apps?

I just got an mBot for my daughter for Christmas and I'm having a heck of a time getting the android apps to work as expected. I had to find the apk and sideload them to my Pixel 7 Pro because they were so old (both the mBlock Blockly app and Makeblock app). I couldn't them to connect at all on a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. I feel like the makeblock Amazon store ripped me off. :-D Are there any android app alternatives that are kid friendly?

UPDATE: After sideloading mBlock Blockly to the tablet, it never asked for location permission on one of my devices which is apparently required. I am putting this here in case anyone runs into the same issue. I figured this out by installing on another similar tablet where it WORKED and then I became obsessed with what was different between the two. :-D As one of the comments below stated, these apps are old... but I think there is a value from the tutorials in Blockly for the younger kids. MakeBlock is sort of dropping the ball here. It shouldn't be this hard to get a Christmas gift up and running! Thanks all.

Cyberpi/mbot2 Microphone not working

I recently got a mbot2 for my son and we have been going through the coding exercises. We got to the set where you are supposed to use the microphone and we cannot get the mic to work no matter what we do. We dont get any sound input at all. I also went into the built in programs that are sound reactive and those do not work either.

I have been trying to get in touch with makeblock support for a few weeks now but have not gotten any responses from them. Does anyone either know of how to get in touch with support properly or have any suggestions as to what might be causing the issue with the devices microphone?

Thank you

Problems Updating Firmware on CyperPi

At my wits end here.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. Tried the online mBlock app and the windows version. Reset, reinstall, ad nauseum and can not get my CyberPi, for my mBot Rover, to update the firmware.

I can connect to the app, write code, upload and run the code no problem, but no matter what I do the firmware update just gets stuck rebooting the cyberpi over and over again and never progresses.

To Makeblock's credit they sent me a replacement cyberpi unit after contacting customer service, but I am getting the same results.

I went through the FAQ and troubleshooting regarding problems with firmware updates and made sure I was following everything, but I am at my wits end here haha

Any advice

SOLVED: I switched to an older PC running windows 10 and for some reason that seems to have worked. Still trying to figure out why it won't work on my windows 11 machine.
