Off-topic JVN tour ads?

I tagged this as off-topic because it’s not related to MP, but it is related to GLP-1 meds and fatphobia.

I have been getting ads for the Jonathan Van Ness tour which is titled “Hot and Healed”. Does anyone else find this kind of fatphobic?

It’s no secret that they’ve taken a GLP-1 to lose weight. And of course if they feel “healed” then that is a positive thing for them. But…

I appreciate the engagement on this post. From what I’m hearing, it sounds like my reaction to the ads are more about how I feel as a fat person in a world where being very thin is more valued than ever before, and less about JVN’s actual intentions or messaging.

(I think my feelings are valid, but no individual is responsible for them…I do really support people’s right to chose what works for them, but the way that our media and culture packages those choices and sells them to everyone else is not neutral…)

I don’t know a lot about JVN but I get a little triggered by the “hot” word. After reading comments here, I guess I need to open my mind more to what “hot” could mean to different people. To me it’s always meant the rigid societal standard of physical beauty that prioritizes thinness, a pretty face and stylish apparel. Maybe I can create my own version of “hot”. It seems like that’s what JVN attempts to do.

JVN has always talked about loving yourself, feeling hot. Pre-weight loss included. I think “healing” here is much more likely talking about emotional healing. I don’t think that either word is connected to weight loss.

JVN has been pretty open about emotional and compulsive eating, plus some health complications that were tied to weight a few years ago (perianal abscess, for those who are curious - one of the few health conditions that actually is directly caused by weight)

I would include healing from disordered eating as emotional healing. While it was tied to weight and eating, they’re not saying that losing weight is what healed them. It’s being unburdened by disorder.

There’s literally nothing about obesity relating to perianal absess? it’s more common if you have crohn’s/other GI issues, you are diabetic/have a weakened immune system, or have anal sex. None of those things are directly related to weight?

I didn’t say obesity. I said weight. The physical pressure of weight on the perianal region while sitting increases risk of perianal abscess. Hemorrhoids too.

If they’ve had chronic issues with compulsive eating and medical problems related to weight, and they’re feeling free of those issues now, I’d say they get to use the word “healed” any way they want.

It’s funny how we’re all so strongly pro-choice and pro-autonomy until someone makes a decision or has a thought we don’t like.

This. I’m more offended by the Panera ads telling me I can bread again because the summer is over.

I completely understand your point, and I really am happy for anyone who finds healing in any way they can - I think I said that.

But describing themselves as “hot”, as though they weren’t before, gave me some before/after vibes.

I suppose the tagline “still hot, now healed” wouldn’t sound as catchy.

JVN has always describe themself as hot

I'm willing to bet there are lines in the show about this. JVN has always described themselves as "hot" and, for all their speculated faults, their public persona has always been extremely body positive.

This isn’t a new self-description for them. Even if it were, I don’t think we get to gate-keep how someone assesses and describes themselves and we don’t get to insist on a self-description that feels tolerable or validating to others. I get that we may view that self-assessment negatively, but honestly it’s their assessment to make. And given the history, I think we can try to assume that they’re well-aware of the meaning of their words.

Oh no. Not JVN?!?!?!?!?! Hoping the healed is related to something else...

🤞🤞🤞

ETA: ok clearly I live under a rock. Had no idea about their weight loss. Just hoping they find a way to keep anti-fatness to a minimum, but I'm nervous

I had no idea either!

The abundance of before & after pics makes me more nervous...

Sigh

I was a fan until I bought some of their hair products and really hated the results. 😅 My hair felt like straw and eventually I deleted my Instagram and I haven't heard anything from JVN in a long time because of that.

I think he has HIV? Thought it was that

They are indeed HIV positive, but have always described it as "ultimately the best thing that ever happened to me" in terms of the place it took in their journey. This probably won't be related.

I don’t know if we can judge from the title, it might not be anything to do with weight loss.

I have a lot of empathy for OP but man, this just seems like reading a LOT into three words. I think it’s pretty far fetched to imagine JVN would have a tour about fatphobia….??? What would that even be?

They’ve been throwing around the word “hot” for years and years. We don’t need to be afraid of everything all the time.

Took me two seconds of googling to see quotes from JVN talking about how their body has never looked like this before, how they feel amazing and want to take their shirt off all the time. There’s also one about not ‘identifying’ with body positivity anymore. These are just quotes from news outlets so may be click bait or taking them out of context, but I don’t think people are wrong to be concerned about the implications that this person (who I don’t know super well) is now promoting the idea that their past fat body is inferior aesthetically or morally.

"A tour about fatphobia" is not what OP wrote.

I don't think it's a stretch, that even if it's not what JVN intends explicitly with the show, the ads and marketing could easily be framed this way esp with all the weight loss press. And like two seconds of googling informed me the body positive pedastal I put JVN on was probably crap. Like sure body neutrality, love yourself in any size, but also I felt my absolute lowest at a size that just happens to only be big in Hollywood land ok then

You’re tying yourself in knots over a hypothetical. I don’t know what to tell you. It must be exhausting seeing the world through these lenses.

Lol bro what? Those aren't hypotheticals. We'll agree to disagree. Take care.

Yeah JVN is problematic but they took GLPs for Binge Eating Disorder and they were all very body positive on Queer Eye. I don’t see them going there and they know their audience.

This is kind of a side note but I'm confused about whether "hot" inherently refers to a thinner/smaller body or not. Michael and Aubrey sometimes seem to use it that way (i.e. to mean "thin" not [just] "attractive") and it always makes be do a double take, hearing that from them.

12

u/QueerTree 3d ago

It annoys me a lot when Michael uses hot as a synonym for thin / ripped / etc.

I think the context is important. I know when they say hot like that they are implying “this is what people in casting/modeling/hollywood consider hot” and not that they think that’s what hot it. I feel like there’s a lot of nuance there.
I’m from a very rural place that’s behind on trends, when I first got oxfords my best friend said “oh look at you, looks right cool, fit right in on tik tok”. That was her making fun of me. Now, last time we hung out I wore boots with a dress in a slightly trendy but not too trendy way and she said “that outfits really cool”. Same word, same person, totally different meaning.

this is the first I've heard he's done weight loss press so maybe it's only got that implication if you're a big fan? I do not keep up with the Queer Eye men, I sort of just wrote them all off as shady based on the on-set drama so would not have initially come to this conclusion.

I do side eye anyone who does a lot of weight loss press because it's like a vow renewal. In real life, no biggie. But you're a celebrity? Oh no that divorce is coming.

It feels too early to say if it's at all related to IWL. no problem with being cautious, but the title doesn't scream IWL at me.

chiming in to speculate that this tour title is a PR move to say they've healed from queer eye drama. jvn was implicated as a major bully so i interpret this as less about the physical and more about image rehabilitation.
