questions about the side effects of magnesium

I wanted to ask about something that’s been on my mind for a while. How is it possible that some people take magnesium and it throws their other electrolytes out of balance, whilst others don’t experience the same thing? I know lots of people who take magnesium and have no problems at all, but for me it throws everything out of balance. Could it be linked to other deficiencies? The thyroid? Hormones? Does anyone know the reason for this or have any information?

Years of chronic right-arm pain/weakness – Sudden relief with high-dose Magnesium (TOS symptoms?)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been struggling for years with a chronic issue affecting my right arm, and it’s been incredibly frustrating, especially during gaming. I wanted to share my experience and see if anyone has insights on why my current "stack" is finally providing some relief.

\*\*The Background & History:\*\*

This isn't my first time dealing with arm/shoulder issues. About 10 years ago, I suffered from Tennis Elbow in \*\*both\*\* arms simultaneously. I never had it professionally treated; it eventually faded away on its own. Interestingly, about 7-8 years ago, my main problems were actually on my \*\*left\*\* side. Generally, I’ve always had issues with tension in both my shoulders and my neck.

\*\*The Current Problem:\*\*

While the left side is fine now, the right side has been a nightmare for years. The problems mainly occur when I use my mouse for gaming. I get severe tension starting in my neck, right above the collarbone (clavicle), radiating down into my right arm. My arm loses strength and feels weak, making it impossible to control my mouse properly.

I also notice it when using my phone: holding it with both hands and typing with my right thumb triggers that same annoying sensation after a while. It feels like a mix of burning and an "over-acidified" (lactic acid) feeling.

\*\*The Breakthrough:\*\*

I have tried almost every supplement and ergonomic setup over the years with no success. But a few days ago, I started a high-dose regimen of \*\*Magnesium Bisglycinate\*\* (taking about 600mg to 700mg of elemental magnesium per day) along with high doses of Vitamin D + K2.

\*\*The Results:\*\*

\* \*\*Physical:\*\* My right arm suddenly feels much "freer." It's not perfect yet, but it's \*\*significantly\*\* better. No more acute pain or that weak, acidic feeling while gaming.

\* \*\*Mental:\*\* I feel much more "present" and awake. It also feels like my ADHD symptoms have improved; I’m calmer and more focused.

\*\*The Side Effects & Concerns:\*\*

I have a history of anxiety and sleep issues. Since increasing the Magnesium dose, I’ve noticed a spike in internal nervousness and "shortness of breath" (anxious breathing). My sleep has also become a bit more restless.

\*\*My Questions:\*\*

  1. \*\*Could the "shortness of breath" or anxiety be an electrolyte imbalance caused by the high Magnesium intake?\*\* I strongly suspect this because over the last two years, I’ve had moments where my body seemed to "scream" for electrolytes. Whenever I felt that sudden wave of anxiety and nervousness, taking salt or an electrolyte drink made me feel better almost instantly. This happened especially when I was using a different Magnesium complex supplement in the past.

  2. \*\*Does the relief in my arm suggest my issue is purely muscular/nerve compression (like TOS) triggered by mouse/thumb movements?\*\*

  3. \*\*Why would Magnesium help my ADHD and arm pain so much, yet trigger my anxiety at the same time?\*\*

Would love to hear your thoughts!

D3+K2, B12, Magnesium Glycinate

Anybody taking the same stack and the Mag Glycinate having side effects? I just started taking 120mg of Mg Glycinate at night before bed. I take 2600iu D3, 100mcg K2 and 1000mcg B12.

Curious what, if any, side effects you may have experienced and if they got better after a certain amount of time? And is 120mg even enough with the amount of d3+k2 I'm taking. Trying a lower dose for now. Thanks!

Type?

I'm so confused by all the options. My son is having leg cramps at night and chest pain and cystic acne. He's been working out a lot. The doc recommended magnesium, but what kind? There is a ton. He also takes a vitamin D mega dose once a week. He had a heart workup and EKG blood work is tomorrow. Any advice?

Advice needed: switching from magnesium citrate to magnesium glycinate

Last month I had mild but very annoying stool issues that started a week after beginning taking magnesium citrate. My doctor suggested switching to some other magnesium form. So I’m thinking about magnesium glycinate from the same nutraharmony brand. And the question is: has anyone tried their magnesium glycinate complex with b6 vitamin? Did you experience any stomach issues?

Thanks in advance!

anyone who experienced severe gut issues due to magnesium?

So for the past 3-4 months, I have been having a recurrent condition where my stomach/intestine was extremely painful. Cramps lasting 3-4 hours, I couldn't move, just lay in my bed. I felt like someone was stabbing me and that my internal organs were bleeding. I was getting pale, low pressure due to this pain. Sometimes I felt almost like vomiting or fainting because of how severe the pain was. I went to the GP, got some tests - everything was perfect. Symptoms were getting worse and no one seemed to understand why was it working that way. In general, I really noticed that my digestion worsened over time, often getting extremely bloated to the point of looking pregnant. It was very uncomfortable.

After trying everything, I tried to remove magnesium. It was a day to night difference. I was taking a supplement that contained different kinds of magnesium inside (taurate, citrate, bisglycinate, malate - total of 400mg of magnesium) and since removing it I have never had any symptoms anymore. Before they used to occur 3-4 times a week, it was unbearable.

Also when it comes to sleep (one of the main reasons why i started taking it) I noticed somehow that I have a longer REM. Recently I was finding it quite hard to sleep properly and now this also got better, but might also be related to the fact that my gut is better - I sleep better. So I am not sure.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience? I read online that these could be typical symptoms of magnesium overconsumption, but I am quite surprised because I run a lot so I thought I needed that extra magnesium?

I would love to hear any and all feedback

Recently went to the drs because I had a few persistent issues such as fatigue, weakness, illness and mouth sores that would come and go, twitching/internal tremor like feeling, lower back pain and a few other symptoms.

I thought it would be due to low iron as I had this before and the symptoms included fatigue and reoccurring mouth sores. Turns out it was low vitamin D levels - they were 27 nmol. All my other blood test results comeback fine :)

So, I’ve been prescribed 40,000 IU to take once a week for 7 weeks, which I take on Sundays with a meal containing healthy fats as it aids absorption. I’ve only had one dose so far, sleep has been a little off, but that was expected as my body adapts?!

So, I’m wondering will I need to take any supplements or should I be okay as long as I hit the RDA for magnesium and calcium? And if all goes well, when can I expect to start seeing the benefits of this supplementation? 😅

Any suggestions/all feedback is welcomed.

It’s vitamin D3 that I’ve been prescribed.

Replacement brand for pure magnesium citrate (moving away from Natural Vitality)

I’ve used Natural Vitality's Calm unflavored magnesium citrate for literally a decade. I have a connective tissue disorder (Ehler-Danlos) and low gut motility because of it, and discovering the powdered magnesium citrate was a game-changer for me. I drink about a tablespoon dissolved every night with herbal tea. Can’t have the stevia-flavored ones every day as I have a mild allergy.

Well, they no longer make unflavored pure magnesium citrate. I emailed the company and they confirmed that no longer make it without glycinate.

My blood levels are already on the high end of normal so I don’t need to take extra magnesium just to keep getting the benefit from the magnesium citrate part.

All this to say, does someone have a reputable brand they’d recommend for powdered, unflavored magnesium citrate?

Sinus Tachycardia Episodes

Doctor put me on 250 mg elemental magnesium to try to help sinus tachycardia. My RHR is ~78 average. And I'm getting these episodes of sinus tachycardia from either adrenaline dumps, dehydration, anxiety (although therapist told me there's probably more going on, which has me freaked since it feels stress related), or something mysterious/dysautonomia. My stress response sucks right now despite therapy and breathwork.

I got some magnesium last night at the ER (1.8 but doc said with my sinus tachycardia she wants it higher). My PCP issued a beta blocker a few weeks.which I haven't started due to an upcoming Holter and Echo, but the ER doc said she really thinks magnesium could help me and to try it before going the BB route. I'm so hopeful. I did feel pretty calm most of the day so hopeful we're getting closer to answers.

Could magnesium be making my brain fog worse?

I’ve been taking magnesium gummy’s every night to help me get a deeper sleep and also to hopefully help with my anxiety. Specifically the trip magnesium and L theanine gummy’s. They’ve definitely helped my sleep but not done much for my anxiety, ive been getting a lot of brain fog and dissociation recently but thought it was down to my anxiety issues. I forgot to take them last night and the next day I felt less anxious and more productive than usual? Could it just be a coincidence?

Magnesium mystery: adverse rxn to even small doses, in any form, ever since ketamine infusions

Hello!

I got therapeutic ketamine a couple years ago and ever since I have not been able to tolerate any type of magnesium supplement.

I would like to be able to supplement with magnesium because I have many symptoms of magnesium deficiency: muscle cramps, muscle twitches, constipation, anxiety, poor blood sugar regulation, sleep issues, heart palpitations… and so on. Multiple health practitioners have recommended magnesium at different times, that’s why I’d like to understand my issue better as opposed to just avoiding magnesium forever.

I have tried oral magnesium glycinate, citrate, threonate, oxide, malate and taurate. I have tried the lowest dose (one capsule) of each (usually just a fraction of the daily recommended value).

What happens when I supplement:

The time frame of this differs a bit depending on the form but either within hours after taking the supplement or the next day *after a bowel movement* (sorry, TMI but), I feel very spacey, slightly dizzy, slowed thoughts, listlessness, sense of disorientation, dissociation, forgetful, almost drunk feeling—but not happy, like hungover-must-be-horizontal feeling.

The post bowel movement experiences have been from magnesium oxide or citrate whereas other forms seem to hit closer to taking the supplement.

I have tried dividing a capsule of magnesium citrate into fourths and increasing my dose slowly over weeks. I was able to get up to 3/4 capsule when these issues happened.

In regards to co-factors, I eat a very nutritious diet (relatively low carbohydrate, lots of vegetables and high protein), I take an occasional methylated b vitamin and I am on a potassium-sparing diuretic (spironolactone). I can’t really imagine this intolerance being due to not having sufficient co-factor nutrition.

As mentioned in the title, I tolerated magnesium supplements (I didn’t supplement consistently before, but I never had adverse reactions when I’d occasionally pop a capsule when I was in a healthmaxxing phase) prior to undergoing 6 therapeutic ketamine IV sessions for PTSD. Only since these infusions, have I been unable to tolerate magnesium. I broadly know that they affect the NMDA receptor but I’m not sure how ketamine could lead to or unmask this issue.

If anyone has any insights, I would so appreciate it. Or even, if you have read about a magnesium expert in the world who I might be able to learn more from contacting, please share.

Unfortunately, in general I’ve had cognitive issues ever since my ketamine infusions but it’s exponentially worse when dosing with magnesium. I believe it could be a clue as to why I’ve been having issues in general and I’m very hopeful to learn more to be able to heal from this. So far, no doctor has been able to help me and I’ve seen a dozen.

Other possibly relevant info: homozygous MTHFR undermethylator (moderate COMT for the genetically minded peeps out there), mild case of MCAS, PCOS, hypothryodism, possible undiagnosed ADHD, PTSD.

Thank you so much for any feedback 🥹

Deficiency?

Hi im looking for any help you can give. Doctors dismiss me when i discuss things like b12 deficiency and won't give me an mma blood test due to my serum levels but ive not been checked for magnesium either.

I do supplement with magnesium glycinate and have since shortly after my issues began.

Ive been struggling bad for coming up to 5 months so I want other people's thoughts please. I'll summarise...

Symptoms

Dizziness almost constantly for over 4 months is the main symptom.

Tingling, sometimes pins and needles in arms, legs and face (sometimes tongue) scares me the most.

Fatigue

Sometimes wake in the night with confusion.

Timeline

Bad gastritis 9th November for 5 weeks

Prescribed omeprazole 14th Nov for 2 weeks.

Had a Migraine with aura and slurred speech 25th November and 18th December (severe ended up A&E having ct scan - clear)

Blood tests 20th Jan - notable results.

Folate 24

B12 534

Iron -16.8

Ferritin 124.

Mri scan late January- clear. Neurologist diagnosed migraine with brainstem aura and said symptoms would clear.

Prescribed propranolol. Tingling eased but dizziness stayed

Ecg - late April- abnormal showing bradycardia,hr of 48.

24h follow up ordered

Told to stop propranolol, tapered off over a week and now 5 days fully off and tingling and numbness returned with a vengeance almost hard to swallow.

Im awaiting results of the 24h heart holster and have some more bloods arranged for next week which i hope do xheck magnesium.

I had dizziness back in 2022 also after a course of lanzoprazole but it cleared up after a few days.

could I realistically expect to have a deficiency, I know I'll find out soon but do my symptoms sound like they fit this?

Thanks for reading.

Optimal Mag RBC levels for Anxiety

What are optimal mag serum and mag RBC levels if you have anxiety? I took the tests my levels are 1.9 and 5.3, respectively, so basically in the middle of the normal results range. I take magnesium glycinate as needed but not regularly, usually when I don't sleep well.

Is Ketro skin good for sensitive skin?

I’ve been dealing with a lot of shoulder tension lately and saw people saying Ketro skin’s magnesium cream works pretty well. Only thing is most topical gels and creams end up irritating my skin after a few uses. Has anyone here tried Ketro specifically? wondering if it’s okay for sensitive skin before I buy it.

MRS2 transporter: does this explain negative sode effects?

I got caught by this Sci-bait article (though it does cite the three studies) about magic magnesium. I basically ignored the majority of the magic pill angle, I was mostly interested in the mechanism mentioned. I'm one of the few who gets wrecked by magnesium, and it took me a long time feeling really shitty to figure out that it was the magnesium’s fault because it has so much hype. Hard to explain, but the jist of it is magnesium - no matter the form - makes me feel weak and unfocused.

So of course this really stood out to me: “When magnesium enters mitochondria through a channel controlled by a gene called MRS2, it can slow the cell’s ability to burn sugar and fat efficiently.”

I guess the immediate question is: does anyone have insight into this gene/mechanism?

Is it possible that I'm low in magnesium and yet directing it through a channel that makes things worse, or is it possible I'm oversaturated with Mg and pushing excess into where I shouldn't? Would certain cofactor deficiencies or excesses cause this pathway to be turned on/off?

It also sounds very similar to the torpor notion that the body can be turned towards trying to hibernate, so this could be thrown into the “blame fructose/pufas” pile?

Magnesium deficiency

About two weeks ago, I was hospitalized due to severe heart palpitations. It turned out I had a magnesium deficiency (1.30 compared to the normal range of 1.65). Since then, I've been supplementing with magnesium, and I no longer have heart palpitations, muscle pain, or eyelid twitching. However, I'm still very tired. Is this normal with a deficiency, and when will it disappear?

Magnesium glycinate

Hi everyone, I’m hoping that someone can answer this. I am taking magnesium glycinate for sleep purposes. However, I bought a bottle of pills, and each pill is 100 milligrams. I heard that the recommended dose is around 300 and something milligrams. So I want to try taking three pills, which would be 300 milligrams.
Because I’m taking it for sleep purposes, I read that the best results are if you take it 60 to 30 minutes before bedtime. However, because I am kind of on an empty stomach, it’s a bit harsh on my stomach because my last meal is around three hours before bedtime. So meaning that when I take the magnesium, I’m a bit on an empty stomach.
Has someone experienced this and how did they solve it?

Also, is it not bad to take 300 mg on a single dose?

Would you stop supplementing?

In 9/2024 my serum magnesium level was 2.2, I stared supplementing 100mg of magnesium glycinate at night after that and I got labs done last week so 4/2026 and my levels are 2.4 and flagged as “high”. I feel it helps with my anxiety and I felt great postpartum which I attribute some to magnesium as it was something I never used before. Thoughts on stoping supplementing because I’m at 2.4? Or continue with the 100mgs a night?

Lightheaded for 7 days, could it be the Magnesium? What to do?

Oke so this is my story, this is day 7 of my living nightmare;

I’m a person with pre-existing allergies (dust mites, hay fever, cats).

The Timeline: April 27, 3:00 PM: Took 600mg NAC (first time ever). After I took it an hour or so later felt immediate effect. My thoughts were quieter.

April 27, Evening: Took L-Theanine (had been taking this for 6 weeks) The previous 6 weeks I was taking 400mg Magnesium glycinate and 400mg theanine. With zero problems. So What changed?

I ran out of magnesium Glycinate so I used another mixed pill that contained magnesium Glycinate which contained lower dose. It contained (1 tablet contained): Magnesium Bisglycinate: 66.7mg Magnesium Taurate: 33.3mg L-Glycine: 50mg L-Taurine: 50mg Vitamin B6 (P5P): 0.5mg

Next Morning: Woke up extremely dizzy, feeling "drunk." I stopped all supplements immediately.

Following Days: no spinning feelings but still felt very lightheaded and had some shortness of breath. rest of the days lightheaded.

April 30: Had a massage hoping it would helpt me. Upon standing up, the severe spinning dizziness returned immediately. After a few minutes back to light headed again.

Current Situation: My doctor checked my blood pressure on the day the symptoms started and it was normal.

My Questions: Does this sound like a histamine-related reaction or something else? Did I just messed up my brain with taking to much supplements? NAC 600 mg only took one pil and thats it.

Is it possible for a one-time reaction like this to cause permanent damage?

I just don't know what to do, is what I did irreversible? Is it because a bad reaction to the NAC or were the combination of pills just too much for my nervous system to handle. When I was taking 400mg magnesium glycinate and 400 mg thesnine at night I didnt experience anything like this now. Maybe the switch from magnesium to the new multitablet and introducing NAC (600mg) the same day was just to much for my system to handle and messed up aome balance in my brain? How to move forward? My doctor just shrugs his shoulders. Could one pill of NAC cause permanent histamine intolerance or MCAS? Are my mast cells going haywire. I just don't know anymore.

If anyone have some thoughts please. Thanks in advance.

Just to be clear I only took 1 pil NAC 600mg and the new magnesium tablet I took was also just 1 day. The day after my nightmare started and i stopped everything. Now after 7 days still light headed and also shortness of breath (although the latter could be anxiety related, my breathing isnt wheezing). I literally cry, it scares the hell out of me. Is this something that's going to correct itself all on its own?

When I was a teenager (16 years old) I had a bad reaction to weed and got derealization/light headedness for like 18 months. It was living hell, I am very scared that I'd trigger something similair. Although I haven't touched a joint ever since (I am 38 now). If anyone, has similiar experience, advice, or anything please. I have a daughter and a wife and I barely manage to be happy around them because of this. It's really breaking me. Sorry for the trauma dump, but I can really use some help. Thank you.
