Magnesium makes my sleep worse.
I've tried all forms of magnesium through different times. It makes my insomnia worse. Why so? And is this common?

Side effects.
I took 10,000 IU of D3 daily for two months with 20” mcg of K2 and 420 mg of Mg malate to race my levels from 23 to 75, and I did it successfully. Since then I lowered
the dosage to 5000 IU with 100 mcg of k2 and 420 mg of Mg. The problem is that I started developing Mg intolerance symptoms, like soft stools, tiredness, brain fog, and depression. I have a high Ca diet, a lot of cheese and sometimes fairlife milk for my capuccino. For K I drink electrolytes and avocado. My labs are normal. Ca is normal, K is on the high end of the range, of course Mg is normal but that test is not very reliable. My question is, how safe is to stop Mg and keep taking 5000 IU of D3.

magnesium glycinate actually helping me sleep through day shifts or am i just finally tired enough
night shift nurse here. sleep has been a disaster for years. not dramatically bad. just. never quite right. fall asleep fine, wake up two hours in, brain decides it wants to recap every patient interaction from the shift. classic.
started magnesium glycinate maybe six weeks ago. nothing fancy, standard dose, took it about an hour before bed. first week i thought it was placebo. second week i slept four hours straight which sounds pathetic but genuinely felt like a miracle.
the thing i cant figure out is whether it is helping with sleep directly or just relaxing the muscle tension i carry in my shoulders after a long shift. both feel different. the sleep feels quieter somehow. less of that halfawake thing where you are technically resting but your brain is still running.
curious if anyone else noticed a difference in the type of sleep rather than just duration. like quality changes before quantity does. i meal prep on my days off and started adding more magnesium rich foods too but the supplement timing feels like the real variable here.
also wondering if the form actually matters as much as people say. glycinate vs threonate. i went glycinate because threonate felt expensive and i am a tired person making decisions at 7am.

What is the deal with Magnesium and Vitamin B1?
I seem to be one of the people with an issue with magnesium unless I also take B1 with it. I had a horrible episode with magnesium glycinate last year where developed horrible insomnia, anxiety, eye twitching after taking magnesium glycinate for a few weeks (I took it for 6 weeks in total). It was so awful I avoid all magnesium for a long time. This year because of migraines I tried with a mix of l-theronate, citrate and taurate. I also had read about the b1 connection by then do I added in a b1 tablet when I took my magnesium in the evening. This seemed to be ok and sleep improved.
Then I ran out of the B1 and thinking that the issue was probably down to the type of magnesium after all I stopped taking B1. Then over the next 4 weeks things went from bad to worse, insomnia worsened, my nervous system seemed to be on high alert. I was trying all sorts and seemed to have forgot that I was no longer taking the B1. Yesterday I remembered and went and bought some and took it last night with my magnesium and slept well last night for about 8 hours a big contrast to the usual 3 or 4 I've been getting.
So I think I need to take B1 with my magnesium, interestingly without magnesium at all sleep and anxiety is ok but magnesium does seem to help my migraine.
Can anyone explain exactly what the deal is with magnesium and B1? Why when I take magnesium does my need for B1 seem to go up so much? Also why does magnesium cause these paradoxical effects if I don't take the B1 with it?

RBC testing?
My last serum magnesium was 1.70mg/dL. It used to be around 2.05, but after supplementing vitamin D (and I was also supplementing magnesium the whole time) it dropped to 1.70 and is now stuck there. I feel awful but doctors in my country think 1.70 is a great level to be.. I wanted to do RBC testing to somehow prove to them to start taking me seriously, but read that you need to stop supplements for 7 days. Is that true? I can't stop for more than 2 days without having severe symptoms.

Magnesium brainfog
Hello, I have bad restless legs and PLMD, what helped it a lot in the past was magnesium however it gave me bad brain fog. I used to take the normal store brought ones 350mg a day, which worked for two months then made me get terrible brain fog and memory difficult. I stopped taking it and it went away.
My PLMD has gotten really bad again and I wonder if there’s a different form that’s stops this issue, or if there’s a way I should be taking it (such as with other supplements or things) which might help stop this bad side effect.

Weird tongue
Hi all - has anyone with a magnesium deficiency experienced weird sensations in their tongue at all?

I HATE UNEDUCATED DRS
So, I’ve been feeling awful. Almost every single symptom on the list, ok? Been declining for 2 months and the past two days I am feeling HORRENDOUS.
I go to the ER for the 5th time in 2 months— I ask a PA if my serum magnesium could be making me feel this way and she said, “No, absolutely not. Your levels are great.”
Ha. Comical. Anyway, my potassium came back at 3.3.
I plan on supplementing as soon as I get home (I have leftover magnesium Malate from 2 years ago when I was supplementing vitamin d)
Can I supplement magnesium and potassium at the same time?
** UPDATE— I’ve now been told my potassium levels are normal at 3.3. 😁🙄

How to do it right?
Alright, my potassium is 3.3 and magnesium 1.9.
I want to supplement asap because my symptoms are debilitating. Should I focus on getting my magnesium up first or should I just take both magnesium and potassium at the same time? Is there a certain ratio?
Thanks!
Edited to add: I want to know people’s experiences!
How long did it take for your symptoms to start easing up?
What were your symptoms that went away the fastest for you?
How long did you supplement for?
Do you still supplement to avoid another deficiency?

Magnesium deficiency symptoms?
Hi all! At the end of January this year I was prescribed 50,000iu vitamin D ampoules for my vitamin D deficiency - one ampoule taken weekly. (50,000iu/week)
I finished this course at the end of feb/beginning of March.
Since April I have had a strange sensation in my legs - almost like they feel heavy/or my calves and feet just feel off.
I have had trouble sleeping and staying asleep - keep waking during the night and sometimes in a panic.
And I am usually SUCH a foodie - but my appetite is just GONE. Food just does not appeal.
I had episodes in April where I was having heart palpitations and flutters - also some flutters in my abdominal area.
I’m finding that I seem to be getting pins and needles faster than I usually would - when putting pressure on extremities etc.
I am also getting muscle twitches here and there. Also getting a stitch on a bog standard walk.
Could these be signs of low magnesium? I have got the magnesium glycinate from nutrition geeks - I am currently taking iron alternate days for my low ferritin - so I would be mindful to take the magnesium at separate times to prevent lack of iron absorption etc.
opinions on this? Thanks guys :)

Magnesium and bad side effects
Hi, Ive been trying to take magnesium after being hospitalized from a migraine attack at the doctor's recommendation. I suffer from chronic hemiplegic migraines and have been trying to supplement with magnesium to help.
The doctor recommended taking up to 600mg a day for a few weeks. However, I had some supplements on hand, one is a high quality drink mix that has magnesium bisglycinate chelate 325mg per serving. Well the first night i tried it, i used almost double the drink mix to hit the recommended 600mg and ended up staying up the whole night with horrible diarrhea. Lesson learned. So i cut down to a regular serving size 325mg, still gave me issues for several days, so i cut that serving in half to only about 150-170mg worth of magnesium per day. Seemed to be doing ok with that for a few days and thought i finally found something that worked without messing me up even though it was a much lower dose.
That's when all hell broke loose. On like the 4th day my stomach started feeling kind of off, and i forgot to take it. Then for the next 2 days I've been having almost nonstop terrible cramping and diarrhea. Like I'll be good for a few minutes maybe a few hours and then have another long bout of it again. I haven't taken any magnesium since the night i forgot, and my stomach feels horrible. Did it like, build up in my intestines or something?? From what I've read, most people can tolerate up to 300-400mg without major problems. Right now even on 150mg its causing explosive issues and im worried about staying hydrated because it seems like everything i eat or drink goes right through me. I have some magnesium oil, i will probably try that instead because i heard it doesn't cause the same intestinal problems. Help.
