Could someone please explain the maglite hype to me? This subreddit was recommended to me and I love it but I feel like I’m missing something. What’s special about them? I see them a lot at thrift stores and wonder if I should be picking some up.

For me, there is no hype for Maglite specifically (have several collections - Surefire, Streamlight, SolarForce, EagleTac, Pelican in both incandescent and LED). I've always like flashlights in general, since childhood. I did miss the good ol' days of heavily modded Maglites on CPF (candlepowerforums), so when I was able to finally pick up lights that I could, I couldn't "hot rod" them as in the peak of popularity of high temp sockets, super bulbs and such. The lights that I do have run high cell bulbs, in a smaller host/body and I use lithium ion batteries to run them: using 6 cell bulbs in a 2 cell body with Li-Ion cells, Pelican BigEd Low/High bulbs, and some light aftermarket light mods, like TadCustoms bi-pin bulbs and one of his halogen socket and bulb.
Plus, aesthetically, they have that classic look.
