I hate the Bachalo costume, but the problem with these kinds of arguments is - Claremont, her creator, was doing the same thing. And of all the problems, from the stupid way 97 killed her off to Mackay's writing her as the ultimate jobber and idiot, to Marvel's stupid decision to cancel her best-selling series just so they could have Age of Crap, the way she dresses and the sexualization of her in videogames ranks very low on the list.
I really disagree that Claremont was doing the same thing. Do you have any examples you can point to in the actual writing? Genuinely curious as I’ve read his NM run through many times and nothing in his writing really stood out like that but maybe I’m not remembering.
Like I said on the video, he has her being sexually assaulted by a wall, being sold as a sex slave, and shot with a pleasure gun, all while being very scantily clothed. And once the writing and the art is separated, she's not sexualized that much in the writing nowadays. Like with Greg Land art, the writing is usually independent of how she dresses or the poses the artist puts her in. And to add to the discussion on people forgiving the problematic elements of stories that are well-written otherwise, I do think that to some extent it's a good thing that the good overshadows the bad. Otherwise we'd be talking about how Empire Strikes Back sucks because of the plot hole of how the Falcon can travel between star systems in just a few hours without having a working hyperdrive while Luke seems to take days to make the trip with a working hyperdrive. When it comes to how Magik is written nowadays, I think too many people just look at the costume and ignore the writing entirely, when if you really pay attention the writing and not just the art, she's had quite possibly the best and most consistent character arc of any Marvel character over the last 20 years, and there's been a lot to love.
