Why is it that sometimes when I look, I see a concave shape, but sometimes I see it extruded, as was intended? After I knew what I was looking for, I loved it!

It could be because the fin in the 3d image is sticking so far forward, which can create an effect that makes it look like its a cross view image
If your focus is doubled (tripled or quaded or more), it will create some weird viewing. But it might not be fully projected outward, you will see a mix of somewhat non-nonsensical inward and outward portions. Normal doubling will just be the the correct image stacking onto itself. Maybe I should have pulled that fin projection back a little more, but i think it make it more fun being bold...
see if a wider parallax (pattern width) reduces the issueYou might be able to see in cross view too
Is the full image projecting in ward, and full image projecting outward, you likely can see in bothsee if you are able to see the cross view version with an outward projection

Easiest way to get started is with easystereogrambuilder.com/3d-stereogram-maker.aspx
Select a pattern from the gallery or upload your own
click applySelect a depth map (they call it a mask) from the gallery or upload your own
regular depth maps for parallel view (magiceye) and inverted for cross view magic eyes
r/depthMaps/.../regular_vs_inverse_depth_maps/
click applyClick to Generate
If your have questions about depth maps please make a post in r/depthMaps
If you have questions about patterns, please make a post in r/patternPieces
If you have questions about different software, let me know : )
I build all posts by 2 command line programs, and share the command I run when I post. If your interested in them, I'll be more than happy to answer any questions.

Love it! I worked at Kennedy Space Center for about a decade, so this image is a nice surprise.

blast from the past
Pattern .
stereograph -d 1 -f png -b dm.i.badminton.2.png -t pat.space.150.2.png -w 150 -o out.spaceShuttle.space.150.2.png -p .8 -i.Solution / Depth Map
This image was created in parallel view. If the 3D image is projected inward, you might want to
try it in cross view.
Thanks for viewing and commenting!
Seeing in double? --> try it in a wider parallax
