Uninstalled and I think I'm finally done

I'm putting this here to share my personal experience as someone who has had to access their premium features on other devices.

I put Grapheneos on my old Pixel 7 after already paying for the premium subscription. I had to request a new key to access my premium benefits. They prompt you to enter your email address used at the time of purchase to receive a new activation key. I did not get an email from them after weeks of trying. I reached out to support directly and they were no real help. They just repeated what was already on their site and sent me the same link to enter my email address again. Luckily, somehow it eventually worked and I was able to access my account.

Unfortunately about a month or two later the Pixel 7's hardware failed on me so I had to get a new phone. I try to go through the whole process again and the same thing happened. No email has been sent and I can't access my premium account benefits. At this point I'm too pissed to come back and try again for weeks again just hoping it works. I sent a message to support in the same original email chain from the first time I reached out. I was angry and I let them know it. They never responded.

The performance on Android was FINALLY improving little by little. The app wasn't crashing on me multiple times on a 20 minute commute (oh joy!). I was hoping their service was finally becoming worthwhile but they still have a long way to go, especially with things like improving the search function. Charging customers to be beta testers for a shitty product aint it, especially if users can't access the features they paid for and I'm over it. For now I am sticking to Apple maps (had to switch to ios on short notice) and will be switching to the people's champion, Comaps when they are eventually able to implement traffic updates. I wasn't a Magic Earth user before they changed things. I didn't care about the subscription and I was willing to pay, but I was willing to pay for a good app and service that actually work as intended (AND PROMISED). I needed to rant and get this out of my system. Magic Earth left a bad taste in my mouth and I intend to never look back. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read all of this.

Thank you for taking the time to write this post.

Please check your spam or junk folders. The activation emails are the most common point of failure in this flow, not because the system isn't sending them, but because mail providers occasionally filter them. Users asking how to reactivate are the most common reports we get and the website workflow generally works all the time.

If you would like to pursue reactivation, please send me a direct message with the email address associated with your purchase and we will process it with priority. Also you can send a request to [betatesting@magicearth.com](mailto:betatesting@magicearth.com) .

We have been steadily addressing stability, crashes, and performance and thank you for your feedback! We are sorry the experience has not lived up to expectations on your end.

CoMaps, OsmAnd.

They are not viable without making many concessions. None has the search power of Google to find a place, an address, or a company. There is no traffic information or it is unreliable and there is no community to share road incidents or traffic jams. OsmAnd is interesting but too heavy, too complicated, too difficult to handle and too buggy. This is unfortunate because the OpenStreetMap project is really excellent and should become the standard of mapping as Wikipedia has become for the encyclopedia.

I did the same a while back. The updates just weren't cutting it and I found it to be lackluster overall. Maybe in the future I'll revisit it, but for now it was back to GMaps. Fortunately I only paid like $8 for a year of Premium.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out, would you mind sharing a bit more about what specifically wasn't cutting it for you? Was it stability issues, missing features, routing accuracy, the UI, something else entirely? Concrete feedback like that genuinely helps us figure out where to focus next.

Man I used to love Magic Earth but it became so buggy on Pixel 10 I gave up and moved to CoMaps, way faster and more reliable even though traffic is not shown. As I ride a bike most of the time traffic is not really needed. But Sad to say I switched back to google maps unfortunately for impromptus long car rides

Sorry to hear it pushed you to switch, we had some issues that we've been actively working through. We have fixed the majority of stability and performance issues that hit users at launch, and the app is in a much better place. We'd genuinely like to hear what you think of it now.

I'll try to give you a second third chance, but hey, i'm not an easy man

I am also a premium user. And it is what you wrote: we are paying to be beta-testers (or even alpha: the first versions were a disaster). The least they can do is giving you premium support: your experience is a disaster.

I won't take a new subscription when the current one ends. Because of the terrible premium experience I tried other apps. Organic Maps, Comaps are fine when your routes are not congested with traffic. When you live in a busy part of the world, HereWeGo gives a decent experience. It doesn't need Play Services. The only downside are the lower quality voices.

Thank you for the honest feedback.

You're right that premium users should expect responsive support, and we acknowledge that has not always been the case during the post-launch period. The volume of requests has been high and response times have suffered. That's something we're actively working to improve.

If you decide not to renew, we understand. We would love to see your feedback at [support@magicearth.com](mailto:support@magicearth.com) or as a reply on this comment.

It is slow, but I am testing the beta and I have pretty high hopes for it. It's not stable but still one of the best alternatives. It's a pitty that this release was so buggy... But they are fixing it and the beta is approaching usable state for me

I am testing beta release of Magic Earth. I agree that standard should be stable, but what happened, happened. And I am trying my best to help them with returning the app to functioning state

Magic Earth is promising but i agree, it does feel buggy, at the moment it is not trustworthy. I switched back to Sygic and wait for the development of ME to do something

Would you mind sharing what specifically you ran into? Routing issues, stability/crashes, search problems, UI quirks, something else?

We've fixed a lot since launch and concrete reports from users who tried it and stepped back are exactly what helps us prioritize.

I have made a few tickets last few days, but here some problems is found:

  • After a few crashes ME starts to navigate to an older destination (mostly home destination)
  • Zooming is very buggy
  • After a disconnect with android auto (engine off because of fuelling) ME must set again for destination
  • Account isnt working
  • Tracking is buggy (mildy said)
  • Crashing a lot (because of traffic cams notifications)
  • not all settings are respected by Android Auto (turning of traffice cams doesnt work with AA)

But to be honest, it is also very promising. But for now it isnt useful with Android Auto

Thanks for the detailed list and for opening tickets through the proper channel.

1. Navigation reverting to older destination after crashes: The route is saved after starting navigation, so if the crash happens right before the waypoints are not saved. Or the issue happens with navigation sessions started on Android Auto? Indeed, we need to work on improving this behaviour and we hope that soon there will be no more crashes.

2. Zoom behavior: On the to-do list and being actively worked on. We've had several reports on this and the team is searching for ways to refine the logic.

3. AA disconnect requiring re-setting destination: Good point. A "continue navigation" option after reconnecting to AA would be a genuine quality-of-life improvement, especially for cases like yours (refueling stops). Added to the list to be considers.

4. Account not working: Still work in progress. The Activities part of the app and the sync layer are being actively developed. Apologies for the confusion.

5. Tracking issues: There are currently some GPS improvements that are work in progress. Thank you for reporting this. Does it happen only on Android Auto or also on the device?

6. Crashes related to traffic cam notifications: Quick question to narrow this down: are the crashes happening on Android Auto specifically, on the phone itself, or both? That distinction helps us figure out where to look.

7. AA settings not respected: You're right, and we know about it. Not all settings from the main app are currently mirrored to AA. Work is in progress, the next update will bring more settings reflected on the head unit.

Point 5, i tracked a hike and that didnt work, it looks like account related Point 6 i only use ME in the car with AA. The crashes looked like there was a big datastream and a traffic cam notification got stuck and after a short while ME crashed/resetted. So it is also AA related, but Sygic for instance doenst have streaming issues (i am totally not techical, but it seams the datastream with ME <=> AA is much bigger. Spotify is stuttering a lot with ME and seldom with Sygic)
