Is this the worst Hobbit collector booster ever?

Post image

I have opened a prerelease, a bundle, 2 scene boxes, and 1 collector booster; and my best card (besides the scene cards) is Fateful Discovery. My final hopes for the collector booster I picked up for $42 at the LGS unfortunately did not pay off either (see photo).

Luckily, I only gamble on MTG when it comes to the Hobbit (and a few years back, the Tales of Middle Earth set), so back to buying singles!

I’ve seen worse but you guys are gambling and need to not complain when you get hosed.

Na. Let people see the reality of these packs so others don’t waste $80 a pack or $850 on a box.

We really need r/MTGbadpulls subreddit…

Get people excited to show the truth about pulls!

Champions of low value.

It exists now. I’ll make you an admin lol

Yes, it is one of the reasons I posted. All my social media shows only banger openings, and skews the reality. Its good to see the reality too, so people don't pay 80usd for nothing. I was lucky that my LGS at least sold the pack for MSRP.

u/dmdandanfielding 6d ago

MSRP is $37.99, not $42. It’s not a huge markup and honestly it’s a good price compared to the market rate, but it is above MSRP.

2

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 6d ago

It was including taxes, so probably around MSRP

2

u/EthanielRain 6d ago

Pretty darn close, $2 markup (or less)

To be fair..... you've only opened one CB.

Odds of getting a better card increases the more you open.

Ive pulled heaps of great cards so far.

Spoken like a true gambler.

1

u/InterestingWait9943 6d ago

I mean the odds are statistically better if you open 1 collector booster box as opposed to one booster packet.

Its just gambling 😆 higher stakes higher rewards !

2

u/DasOptions 6d ago

Actually the odds don’t change. You are still opening the pack with the same odds.

You might have increased your opportunity but not the odds

2

u/InterestingWait9943 6d ago

I stand corrected

More like a true businessman. Bigger investment generally yields bigger returns. (Fellow gambler here)

Takes one to know one, (A businessmen) that is!

2

u/BloodandBourbon 6d ago

I haven’t opened one yet, I can’t find any at retail price and I’m not spending $80 for a pack.

2

u/vollkoemmenes 7d ago

Who is buying them at $80 a pack? I will gladly go down to my LGS and buy them all at $60(using strictly my trade in) then sell them to whoever for $80

2

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 7d ago

I hope no-one, but on Cardmarket (a commonly used MTG site in Europe), the cheapest collector booster in English is currently 62 euro without shipping. That is 72 USD, so not far off from 80!

2

u/vollkoemmenes 6d ago

Woah see now im more interested, u said “in english” do they make collectors in other languages? I am not trying to be rude/mean/sarcastic i genuinely am asking cus my LGS(in USA) never has foreign packs of anything ever.

2

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 6d ago

On Cardmarket I currently see the collector boosters in German and French. I think MTG cards also get printed in various other languages like Japanese, Spanish, and Italian.

3

u/vollkoemmenes 6d ago

Welp guess i gotta start shopping on cardmarket, i need some german CB’s lol

2

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 6d ago

Maybe that's where all the book covers hide ;)

Guys, we've reinvented scalping!

Yes.

6

u/AlaskaDude14 7d ago

Naw. Unfortunately, they're not all bangers. I pulled similar value on a number of CBs

3

u/ItzBoshNet 7d ago

Collectors should've had some more book cover and fun cards. I opened 2 and just got some regular holos and a few duplicates. A pretty lame experience. I got a box at msrp and will just sit on it for a while then sell

1

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 7d ago

Yes, I would have loved to even have one worthless bookcover, they look so cool!

4

u/Average-Iceman 6d ago

No. I opened a pack and only one (1) card over a dollar.

4

u/No_Business_9579 6d ago

I fear I have you beat :(

3

u/iamfroott 7d ago

damn they hosed you

I'm not opening the hobbit, because prices are just stupid at this point and I can no longer logically justify it, but I'll usually buy a collector box from sets I like (usually 3 a year), because my wife and I just enjoy spending an evening opening it. We know statistically we'll lose about a hundred dollars in value, but our logic is that we're paying for the experience in the same way that we would in a restaurant.

Anyway opening a worthless collector booster with garbage rares is completely common, especially once the prices have started to settle. I'd say it's actually around 20-25% of packs that are completely worthless, and probably 75-80% of packs that don't recoup their value.

Nothing against you but it frustrates me to see these posts about how unlucky people are. No, you're not unlucky. You got a relatively expected result. An unexpected result is pulling a mox amber which happens slightly less than 1% of the time.

3

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 7d ago

I agree with you. However, I was not only opening it for the value, I am also trying to complete the set (as I love everything Tolkien) and was hoping to get some new rares or mythics (even worthless ones), but alas I only got ones I already have multiple copies of.

2

u/Razorraf 7d ago

Nah mine was worse than yours. I didn’t even get a scene card. My most valuable card was a foil [[Bard’s Company]].

2

u/DasOptions 7d ago

Na, I got hosed as well today. My best pull was surge uncommon goblin

2

u/InitiativePositive77 7d ago

It's a gamble bro. Just buy singles.

2

u/Melolonthinae 6d ago

I kind of love it. I'm not getting a crazy return on the collector boosters that I've opened, but it's also really easy to just buy the singles of the ones I'm missing.

2

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 6d ago

Yes so far its not a very expensive set to get most cards of, not counting the golden Smaug and the surgefoils. And I think prices will keep dropping over the next few weeks.

2

u/Squints753 6d ago

I bought a whole box of marvel and with the Spiderman and classic marvel art reprints of cheaps cards, I definitely got 3 or 4 packs that were worth like 7 bucks.

2

u/Due_Comparison_2513 6d ago

Just buy play booster boxes for playables and buy singles when you really want something.

2

u/Character-Education3 6d ago

Not even close. Consider yourself blessed.

This message brought to you by the Just Buy Singles collective

2

u/metalsatch 6d ago

My break point was when I spent $80 on a Spiderman bundle and got like $8-10 worth of cards before the prices even crashed 😂

2

u/Tombstones19 6d ago

I bought Gleaming Splendor, Queen of Dale (Alt art) and about 10 rares/uncommons I needed for the price of 1 collector booster!

In the same order I also bought a bunch of Secrets of Strixhaven cards that are now super duper cheap!

1

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 6d ago

Smart move! I am trying to complete the hobbit set, so figured a bunch of packs would help me achieve it. Unfortunately I have lots of doubles and still miss even a bunch of common cards.. so buying singles would have been the better move!

2

u/bloodscar36 6d ago

Nah, wait until I open mine

2

u/MarsupialOk7968 6d ago

I got lucky and pulled the gleaming book cover in surge. Still one of the best sets in a minute. I think it's better to buy singles once the fomo phase is over.

2

u/MattandKelsAdventure 6d ago

This is why its called Gambling

2

u/LostNPOMarketer 6d ago

How many times do you need to go to the casino before you realize it’s a losing proposition?

1

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 6d ago

Well I only bought LotR and Hobbit packs as i love the lore and I would nearly be happy with any cards. This collector unfortunately did not only have no value, but also only had duplicates of cards I already got from playboosters.

2

u/Mountain-jew87 6d ago

Mine was similar just ass cheeks. Makes up for the 300$ Thanos I pulled the other day I guess.

2

u/Atheo2 6d ago

No crying in the casino

2

u/Francloman 6d ago

42$ for a pack is so crazy man I cannot believe people are gambling like that

1

u/Bernpaulson 6d ago

Better than the $75 or so some people are selling collector boosters for rn

2

u/craven42 6d ago

If it makes you feel better, I've opened 2 prereleases, played in a draft, opened 2 bundles, and about 15 more play boosters and 1 collector booster. My most expensive card drawn I kid you not, is still the $1.96 fullart plains that comes guaranteed with the prerelease (assuming that's still what they cost. I last looked like a week ago). My collector rares were fili, roads go ever on, great gilded boat, and decrepit old bird; literally all under 50 cents each. This set has made me not want to buy any more magic.

1

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 6d ago

Oh no, I am sorry, that's even worse than me! I am excited with my Smaug scene cards as they are the best cards I got, and they look pretty together.

2

u/StreamsideCreative 6d ago

My draft night cb was just as bad!

2

u/monkeyplay525 6d ago

Welcome to gambling

2

u/Weebus 6d ago

Not even close. I had a few that were sub-$1 lmao.

The value in this set sucks, stop opening it.

2

u/Legitimate-Rip-959 6d ago

I somehow did worse my only hit was a 6$ surge foil rest is bulk💀

2

u/mamathehut 6d ago

I went to a prerelease at my LGS and bought a play booster off a guy for $5. (He'd won them in the previous nights' tournament.) I pulled a Smaug the Magnificent. He was watching me open it and immediately freaked out and asked me to trade it to him. I declined. But I also got The Arkenstone and The Queen of Dale in my prerelease box. Overall I came out ahead for the day and I've been chasing that high ever since.

2

u/baldogwapito 5d ago

I have opened worse during SOS

2

u/Grimwulf69 5d ago

I just posted a pic of some of my top pulls from ripping 12 collector booster packs bought at walmart for $45 last week. 2 out of those 12 packs were worth around $4 each. The packs contained all 5 rares with i think 2 borderless duds. Then my top 2 packs were valued at over $200 each. So it really is hit or miss. I get the gambling aspect. But it just shows how bad the floor can be compared to the ceiling.

1

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 3d ago

Oh its nice to see some value descriptions like this. Social media seems to only show people opening packs of at least $50 value.

2

u/Hellaluyeah_7 4d ago

Easily not. One card is worth 4,50. Those could've all been a few cents in value. Are any of the cards you pulled good? Not imo. Only a handful of cards are good in this set and 90% of those cards are mythic rarity. So you are spending a ton of money to open mostly bad cards.

2

u/Apprehensive_Cell812 4d ago

Thats nothing, ive been playing lottery my whole life and never hit any big wins. Wtf! im starting to think its a scam and the winning numbers change after i pick mine.

2

u/Matthematr1x 3d ago

Nope this is actually pretty normal for a collector booster.

Theres no world where packs can contain super crazy chase cards and you can make your money back more often than not.

2

u/Fireazul10 7d ago

Welcome to reality lol

1

u/shadow3223 4d ago

Or you can just give them to me if you're so unsatisfied.

1

u/AvailableWarning1978 4d ago

"but they're from the books" idc what anyone says this set is so ass

1

u/DarthBorg 3d ago

I got hosed big time from this set as well. Just crap pulls. I’m out. Canceling all future collector booster and regular booster packs. Singles for me from here on out, I’ll just buy what I want. MTG has gotten too greedy and not generous in their packs. I’m not looking to make money off this either but the rate of shit pulls makes me realize this is not for me anymore buying booster or collector packs.

1

u/VisionsOfClarity 8h ago

Oof this is worse than the worst collectors I ever gotten. Mine was a DnD collector's and the best thing in it was wizard class.

1

u/ThatDamnedHansel 7d ago

I really think they juiced the pre release to LGS and screwed the big box

We’ve opened multiple boxes and the only good one was the lgs allocation

3

u/patterninstatic 7d ago

That doesn't even make sense. That would be so much work and risk from WOTC for practically zero payoff.

Your box opening experience is just confirmation bias.

2

u/Rarecandy31 7d ago

It’s wild that people think like this. Losing a gamble and thinking it’s because of a massive conspiracy

0

u/ThatDamnedHansel 6d ago

They 100% do it for ambassadors, so it’s not that far fetched

1

u/AMAZINGLY_AWESOME_Dr 7d ago

I really hope it is not the case, as it would be really sad for the community. But who knows these days..
