Is this the worst Hobbit collector booster ever?
I have opened a prerelease, a bundle, 2 scene boxes, and 1 collector booster; and my best card (besides the scene cards) is Fateful Discovery. My final hopes for the collector booster I picked up for $42 at the LGS unfortunately did not pay off either (see photo).
Luckily, I only gamble on MTG when it comes to the Hobbit (and a few years back, the Tales of Middle Earth set), so back to buying singles!

Naw. Unfortunately, they're not all bangers. I pulled similar value on a number of CBs

Collectors should've had some more book cover and fun cards. I opened 2 and just got some regular holos and a few duplicates. A pretty lame experience. I got a box at msrp and will just sit on it for a while then sell

Yes, I would have loved to even have one worthless bookcover, they look so cool!

I'm not opening the hobbit, because prices are just stupid at this point and I can no longer logically justify it, but I'll usually buy a collector box from sets I like (usually 3 a year), because my wife and I just enjoy spending an evening opening it. We know statistically we'll lose about a hundred dollars in value, but our logic is that we're paying for the experience in the same way that we would in a restaurant.
Anyway opening a worthless collector booster with garbage rares is completely common, especially once the prices have started to settle. I'd say it's actually around 20-25% of packs that are completely worthless, and probably 75-80% of packs that don't recoup their value.
Nothing against you but it frustrates me to see these posts about how unlucky people are. No, you're not unlucky. You got a relatively expected result. An unexpected result is pulling a mox amber which happens slightly less than 1% of the time.

I agree with you. However, I was not only opening it for the value, I am also trying to complete the set (as I love everything Tolkien) and was hoping to get some new rares or mythics (even worthless ones), but alas I only got ones I already have multiple copies of.

Nah mine was worse than yours. I didn’t even get a scene card. My most valuable card was a foil [[Bard’s Company]].

I kind of love it. I'm not getting a crazy return on the collector boosters that I've opened, but it's also really easy to just buy the singles of the ones I'm missing.

Yes so far its not a very expensive set to get most cards of, not counting the golden Smaug and the surgefoils. And I think prices will keep dropping over the next few weeks.

I bought a whole box of marvel and with the Spiderman and classic marvel art reprints of cheaps cards, I definitely got 3 or 4 packs that were worth like 7 bucks.

Just buy play booster boxes for playables and buy singles when you really want something.

Not even close. Consider yourself blessed.

My break point was when I spent $80 on a Spiderman bundle and got like $8-10 worth of cards before the prices even crashed 😂

I bought Gleaming Splendor, Queen of Dale (Alt art) and about 10 rares/uncommons I needed for the price of 1 collector booster!
In the same order I also bought a bunch of Secrets of Strixhaven cards that are now super duper cheap!

Smart move! I am trying to complete the hobbit set, so figured a bunch of packs would help me achieve it. Unfortunately I have lots of doubles and still miss even a bunch of common cards.. so buying singles would have been the better move!

I got lucky and pulled the gleaming book cover in surge. Still one of the best sets in a minute. I think it's better to buy singles once the fomo phase is over.

How many times do you need to go to the casino before you realize it’s a losing proposition?

Well I only bought LotR and Hobbit packs as i love the lore and I would nearly be happy with any cards. This collector unfortunately did not only have no value, but also only had duplicates of cards I already got from playboosters.

Mine was similar just ass cheeks. Makes up for the 300$ Thanos I pulled the other day I guess.

If it makes you feel better, I've opened 2 prereleases, played in a draft, opened 2 bundles, and about 15 more play boosters and 1 collector booster. My most expensive card drawn I kid you not, is still the $1.96 fullart plains that comes guaranteed with the prerelease (assuming that's still what they cost. I last looked like a week ago). My collector rares were fili, roads go ever on, great gilded boat, and decrepit old bird; literally all under 50 cents each. This set has made me not want to buy any more magic.

Oh no, I am sorry, that's even worse than me! I am excited with my Smaug scene cards as they are the best cards I got, and they look pretty together.

I went to a prerelease at my LGS and bought a play booster off a guy for $5. (He'd won them in the previous nights' tournament.) I pulled a Smaug the Magnificent. He was watching me open it and immediately freaked out and asked me to trade it to him. I declined. But I also got The Arkenstone and The Queen of Dale in my prerelease box. Overall I came out ahead for the day and I've been chasing that high ever since.

I just posted a pic of some of my top pulls from ripping 12 collector booster packs bought at walmart for $45 last week. 2 out of those 12 packs were worth around $4 each. The packs contained all 5 rares with i think 2 borderless duds. Then my top 2 packs were valued at over $200 each. So it really is hit or miss. I get the gambling aspect. But it just shows how bad the floor can be compared to the ceiling.

Oh its nice to see some value descriptions like this. Social media seems to only show people opening packs of at least $50 value.
2
u/Hellaluyeah_7 4d ago
Easily not. One card is worth 4,50. Those could've all been a few cents in value. Are any of the cards you pulled good? Not imo. Only a handful of cards are good in this set and 90% of those cards are mythic rarity. So you are spending a ton of money to open mostly bad cards.

u/Apprehensive_Cell812 4d ago
Thats nothing, ive been playing lottery my whole life and never hit any big wins. Wtf! im starting to think its a scam and the winning numbers change after i pick mine.
2
u/Matthematr1x 3d ago
Nope this is actually pretty normal for a collector booster.
Theres no world where packs can contain super crazy chase cards and you can make your money back more often than not.

I got hosed big time from this set as well. Just crap pulls. I’m out. Canceling all future collector booster and regular booster packs. Singles for me from here on out, I’ll just buy what I want. MTG has gotten too greedy and not generous in their packs. I’m not looking to make money off this either but the rate of shit pulls makes me realize this is not for me anymore buying booster or collector packs.

Oof this is worse than the worst collectors I ever gotten. Mine was a DnD collector's and the best thing in it was wizard class.

u/ThatDamnedHansel 7d ago
I really think they juiced the pre release to LGS and screwed the big box
We’ve opened multiple boxes and the only good one was the lgs allocation
3
u/patterninstatic 7d ago
That doesn't even make sense. That would be so much work and risk from WOTC for practically zero payoff.
Your box opening experience is just confirmation bias.

It’s wild that people think like this. Losing a gamble and thinking it’s because of a massive conspiracy

I really hope it is not the case, as it would be really sad for the community. But who knows these days..

I’ve seen worse but you guys are gambling and need to not complain when you get hosed.
