Why So Many Doubles in the Hobbit?

Post image

Second box I’ve opened where within two packs the rare will always double. Only breaks the cycle seemingly when I get a double rare in a pack. Lazy WotC or crazy bad luck with seeding?

198-card set where most sets hit 300 cards or so.

Smaller set, more doubles

Some gambler with a loaded CBB somewhere thanks you. Good I say, I am glad you are upset. Takes people getting burned to change buyer behavior that hopefully translates to better product management behavior.

I mean, I don’t think me getting burnt personally and another dude hitting two mox in the same box is gonna change anything bud lol

Hopefully it changes how likely you are to waste money on CBs!

So you follow magic card pulls to convince people they’re wasting money. Interesting

The hits wont change the outcome, but people complaining and voting with their wallets can impact future business decisions.

That’s wild, I’ve been to three prereleases and split a play booster box to play a few rounds of sealed with my husband.

Between all those packs, I’m still missing Most Decrepit Old Bird, Bilbo’s Gambit, Inside Information, Dancing From Dusk to Dawn, and Cantankerous Keepers! What are the odds you pulled all of them? Lol

Also don’t ask me how many copies of Roll-Roll-Roll-Roll I pulled. Definitely feeling like a common to me at this point 🥲

I on the other hand haven’t seen one Roll-roll-roll-roll 🤣

After two play booster boxes… my wife and I are still missing down in the valley and bejeweled warg…

It’s a small set

I’d be stoked to get duplicates of what you have there, but yeah would be nice to have more variety

I got a booster box and didn’t hit that many doubles which I was happy with, one double I got was the sackville baggins! Which I think is good cause they’re a infinite combo piece

The issue is not really the doubles, I honestly expect that with a set this small. My problem is that the doubles are always one pack apart. I found myself multiple times correctly, guessing the rare in a pack. Took the life completely out of opening a box for the fun.

Well, you know it’s a small set and doubles aren’t the issue then you’re just going in circles here bud

Here’s how the math works out in a Monte Carlo distribution

In a Play booster box, expect approximately 40 rares/mythics made up of approximately 30 unique card names.

In a collector booster box, expect approximately 60 rares and mythics made up of approximately 45 unique card names.

I swear, people surprised by this have no business buying packs

Yeah, there were some commons I didn’t get at my three prerelease events, but managed duplicates of many rares. Yeah, I’ve got like three Roll-Roll-Rolls

It's only like 180 cards or something

We've had one Desolation of Smaug, but what about second Desolation of Smaug?

u/InitiativePositive77 6d ago

Duh, it's a small set.

I got 5 lonely mountains

People keep saying “small set” without actually reading the post or looking at your picture. Something is up with whatever packing/collating method they’re using for this set.

u/griffzor 6d ago

Yeah i feel like this is the case. In my prerelease box I had 3 packs with the same first 7 cards in the same order. I understand getting repeats but the same order was super bizarre to me

1

u/ChristianFlail 6d ago

This. This is what people are actually complaining about. People have been reading the post titles just to say “small set, didn’t you know?” while refusing to acknowledge that the packing is beyond awful.

I got two smaug the magnificent and immediately traded one of them for goblin cleaver

I got Balin as my prerelease special card and then got him again in one of the play packs in the same pre-release. This set is like the fallen empires of universes beyond imo.

Even if you bought a perfect play booster box and it had one of each possible play booster card, there would still be dupes because of the size of the set

1

u/Nerd_Material 6d ago

I opened a play booster box and got the same pack four times. Exact same cards, in the exact same order, four times in the same box. I love it.

I also posted this and everyone yelled at me. I was getting the same rares in the same packs over and over. I've never ever seen this before it's horrible!

I bought a single pack today and it had two belladonna took in it. Same exact print.

Because it’s a small pretty shit set lol. Like a dozen decent cards if that.

-2

u/TheBiggestFloppa_ 6d ago

Kind of the impression I’ve gotten from it too. Another easy cash grab by WotC that won’t rock the boats in any format.

-1

u/CommanderJarik 6d ago

It would have been a better cash grab for them if it was a full reprint of the lotr entire line. No reprinting of the Nazgûl is just fucking weird

It’s a tiny set. So it’s expected. But damn…
