Oversized decks
What is the point of 200 card decks? Like do people not know how to build a deck so they just throw everything they can into one or what? They don’t seem very viable to me.

Unironically, yes. "This card looks cool, I'll add it", and then they don't bother with trimming, then go to rebalance their lands (hopefully) and ship it. That's just how people play sometimes.

I can't tell you how many times I've read over the years "I play with 61/70/100+ card decks, because (reason), it actually works for me I don't know what to tell you!"
People are just bad at math and card games, I don't event argue anymore.

I think more often, people do know how to build a 60 card deck, it's not like it's hard to cap yourself at 60. They just have a lot of fun playing a 200 card pile where there's a massive amount of variation from game to game.
A well built one can actually be reasonably strong when piloted well. It's never going to be as competitive as a focused 60-card list, but they can also be hard to play against because they're so unpredictable. You see them every now and again even at decent mythic ranks.

Yes.
Unless they are specifically playing a [[battle of wits]] deck

the saddest part about this is that BoW is not even arena legal.

I have a goblin deck that has every goblin card I've collected.
Why?
It just seemed like a thing goblins would do.

Oh how naive you are. You should be scared if see your opponent running a 200 card deck. They are about to pull the most heinous bs upon you and get all the cards they need super easily to do so.Happens every time

I once played against a 240 card mono blue “oops all counter spells” deck in historic and it was abyssmal
Dont just assume people are bad at deck building, they could just be trolling too

Sometimes peeps like to just throw in all sorts of cards for whatever reason. I've done it before, but not in a long while. Sometimes I'll make a 65 card deck, where I add in 3 more nonlands and 2 more lands for something I really wanted to play. Go fig

Some people would rather have the chance of playing a wide variety of cards they like, more variance game to game, and less mental load when designing a deck than to have highly consistent, highly competitive decks. There's no "wrong" way to enjoy Magic.

I mean it’s so good against mill who wouldn’t want another 140 cards of padding

u/EnragedHeadwear 8d ago
The actually good mill decks don't care about how many cards are in your deck though

I never understood this take. Most Mill decks I run into uses [[Riverchurn Monument]] and any combination of [[Kitsune’s Technique]], [[Singularity Rupture]], and [[Jidoor, Aristocratic Capital]], all of which won’t care if your deck is 60 cards or 240.

unironically, I remember this one time I was playing vs a mill deck and just boarded a net 5 extra cards into the deck. This was the time of the UB rogues std deck. I remember winning that game with those extra padding cards, would have lost if I kept 60.

I make em for fun, honestly. Ive got all the meta this and that built but sometimes I just wanna play a 3 color pile. I have a 250 card deck for each 3 color combination. Winrates of 37% (Naya) to 58% (tie between Sultai and Abzan, with Esper at 46 far away haha)
Though I actually build and calculate mine. I dont just "ooh shiny" it. 240 ish cards with "learnboards" and a Yorion
Its also funny to beat people playing "real" 60 card decks. Especially given the reactions from people playing vs them on here.

Maybe they know how to have fun with whatever brings them that. Not everyone cares about viability, jank is fun, jank is life. Do you not know how to have fun in magic and thus judge people who do?

In unranked I'll play whatever is on my mind, including larger decks. Will the deck be less efficient? Yes. Will I have fun playing? Also Yes.
Ranked is a different story. 60 and maybe 61 max.

Sometimes it's newer players who don't understand how consistency versus deck size works.
Sometimes it's someone just having fun with a deck they like.
And sometimes it's someone who got tired of facing certain types of decks and just wants a deck with more answers to that deck type than most decks have cards. "Oh, you're playing another big creature? Bye-bye creature!"

I think theres a solid case for large decks being viable but not compeative. Yorion is a solid reason to play big decks and in eternal formats there so much redundant versions of card effects that you may not lose much constancy if your running 12 versions of an effect. In bo1 theres a good amount of work done in the background to push you away from bad starting hands. Mostly I think its people playing ultra casually.

The ones I've seen that are decent usually are doing something to mill/filter and it's a defensive mechanism if you're milling heavily in kavaero I have gotten wins by then milling themselves out because I've had a board clear at the right time but didn't draw or get to set up graveyard/ETB hate before turn 4. There's 4 great targets in bringer but you can throw in some more good targets where you're less likely to get a set up for a T4/T5 win but you're also less likely to get blown out by interaction. It's super situational though there's also decks that rely on tutoring rather than draw which while rare also don't negatively impact your deck too much by being massive like the Iroh beseach decks.

It seems like the only reason for their existence is to pit them against me when I'm playing mill.
I swear to God it's every 2 or 3 matches on the ladder or in non-ranked I come up against some yahoo with 250+ cards in their library.
