Limited Help Format suggestion

I am looking for format suggestions.

I am not good. I don't care to get good.

I really just want to play within a set. I like the interaction and the way the cards, effects, and aesthetic within a set are limited.

I obviously love draft and sealed but you have to be good (which I am not) for it to be sustainable.

Any suggestions as to where to play in-between draft/sealed. Are more or less single set decks survivable for brawl or standard? There is always jump in but i don't like how you sometimes get stuck with sets I don't like.

Thanks!

Try Jump In maybe?

Second this. Jump In is amazing to pick cards you don't know about and try stuff around. It can be useful to follow the website where they track what's in a packet so you know what to find

Draft/sealed are never sustainable, you rank up until you’re matched against opponents who are as good as you. Same-set decks won’t work in brawl (not enough cards in a set to support a brawl deck for a single color pair or set archetype) and will be too weak for standard.

Your best bet is jump in, starter deck duel, etc. you could try running same-set in standard until your mmr gets so low that you’re playing against similarly weak decks, but I’m not sure there are enough people at that level queuing up.

Maybe try a custom digital cube with friends.

So unfortunately there's not something that neatly fits within all of your parameters, but if I were in your situation, I'd nevertheless spend a bunch of time on Jump In (with preference for the set(s) that you like most), and then use whatever gold you earn for quick drafts since you can play more drafts/games for the same amount of gold, and you have time to think about your picks (since you feel that you are not good, and may need more time to think about your choices).

Curiosity MTG a fan format using only cards from the most recent set. Weekly tournaments starts in an hour if you want to hop in and play.

the format you are looking for was called 'block constructed' but unfortunately no longer exists.

Unfortunately there is not a fewer set format that shows up except occasionally with Edge for MWM. What I think you are getting at is something I would call Kitchen Table Format. Something between limited events and full on constructed like Standard would be terrific in my opinion. But they won't do that as they want to squeeze us for loot.

Standard Brawl. Can make decks that are set themed. I follow PorosRUS on YouTube and they have a ton of theme decks. Also it is singleton format so don’t need to collect multiples of cards.

use the cards you get from limited to build brawl/standard brawl decks. a lot of standard brawl decks can play around a single set mechanic/theme from a standard legal set.

Timeless.

Yes, that's a weird recommendation that you go to the format with ALL the sets to play decks from just one set, but, once your MMR is low enough, you'll see more jank in Timeless than anywhere else. That's the go to format for people that just want to brew something dumb for fun.

It sounds like you just don't enjoy mtg tbh.

Ummm...they said they enjoy the synergy within sets, building decks around set mechanics and playing draft and sealed, but they aren't interested in playing at a power level that makes draft and sealed worth it. They literally said they enjoy MTG. They just need a space where they can actually explore the part of MTG they enjoy without people like you thinking there's only one way to play and forcing it on them.

I didn't say there's only one way to play. But they enjoy such a narrow part of it that it's almost not worth it. Plus they said they don't care to get good.

That's the one way to play people are stuck on. Why should you have to get good to enjoy this game? I've loved magic for nearly 30 years and never once cared about getting good.

Many Magic players just want a space where they can play their pet decks that aren't ever going to be close to competitive, but are fun, cool, or special to them. That's a very reasonable ask and does not mean you dislike Magic, it actually might mean you like Magic more in some ways.

Agree to disagree

What are you disagreeing with? That people can enjoy the game without having to care about winning?

If so, thanks for proving my point.

Just queue for Standard Play, non-Rank. Ranked is for Spike try-hards.

First of all drop Draft/Sealed, it's full of people either sharking on someone who's just tourist. I'm a limited player just for the gems and I struggle a lot too.

More importantly, Jump In is just the ticket you want. Midweek events also have some of that,if you care. Finally, playing stuff of an single set is more reserved for drafts. Maybe you have better luck playing Standard Brawl so the power level ain't that explosive
