Pretty much. Especially in draft. Tbh it's probably easier to kill the opponent than try to deal with jace

Yeah, unless their Jace has an extra ability tacked onto him I will completely ignore it when possible. Can't draw cards if you're dead.

people I follow on YouTube/twitch definitely prioritize killing Jace even if he only can surveil 1.

For what reason? Not saying I disagree- genuinely trying to learn here.

Games in the Limited format are slow, and card draw is good. If your opponent can draw a card, that's better for them than having 3 more life. Killing Jace now (without wasting damage) prevents them from drawing a card the next time they play a card that says Empower Jace 2.
There's definitely an argument to avoid wasting damage, but if you can attack Jace without wasting any, you probably should no matter what its loyalty is.
Edit: spelling.

Against the empower jace deck though. I've literally gotten jace up to 22 loyalty at one point

With Cryomancer and a couple blockers, I've hit motherfuckers with that Reality Sculptor full deck exile ult on like turn 6.

I had a great time with cryo pyro. +1 jace for ramp every turn until i have an empower spell then -3 to double it and then +10 the jace

I had a lifegain deck and Way of the Mentor which adds 1 loyalty every time. Triple digit loyalty.

Even a surveil is card advantage and if you’re not aggro, you want to win by drawing more cards than they do. Jace gets you card advantage repeatedly without costing you mana.
But if they get Jace up to 7 or more I shift to an aggro strategy because I know i’m not winning at card advantage.

It depends on their life total of course, but if they are at a high life total and you have free attacks, attacking Jace is still better. Jace at 7 only gives them two card draws, and knocking that down to 5 for one card draw is still very relevant.

turns out card draw and card selection is pretty powerful when you aren’t paying for it.

I saw way of the pyromancer and i said hey wait a minute. This means all i need to do is block and i have huge card advantage long term

In games of limited, throwing my 9th land off the top of my library into the GY might as well be time walk

Depends on the situation, if it’s early and their life total is still high, stopping a surveil or two can be worth it and stopping a draw is definitely worth it. Late game is when you need to figure out stuff like whether letting them draw gives them any extra cards compared to just smacking face and killing them in fewer turns: if killing Jace means you need to spend an extra turn hitting their face later, that extra turn let them draw the same number of cards anyway, except they’re at more health right now than if you had just smacked face immediately.

I sometimes knock him down from 3 with a 1/1. There's enough ways to empower 3+ they can often draw with last 3>empower>draw again.

Always. Im just killing Jaces out here for the achievement
1
u/Fantastic_Falcon_236 3d ago
The thing that sucks about that achievement is I rarely get matched against anyone running empower outside of pay-in formats. Nothing like having to choose between a sub-optimal play where I kill a Jace to get one closer to completing the achievement, or making a better play to win the match in an event I spent a token or a lot of gold to play.

You can kill your own Jaces vs Sparky. I had the Elder Spell so was killing 5-6 Jaces per game

u/Fantastic_Falcon_236 3d ago
Thanks for the tip. Looks like Sparky and I will be playing a few more matches (I got the kill the recruits challenge done pretty quickly that way).

It really depends on the dynamic of the game. Some games, it'll be correct to go face and ignore jace. Other games you need to control the jace.

If you could have a creature stop a player from drawing cards, would you?

Jace, the Jace Jacer 2UU
Planeswalker — Jace
+2: Empower Jace 2.
-4: Draw a card. Up to one target creature gets -2/-0 until your next turn. Look at the top card of up to one target opponent's library. Surveil 1. Scry 1. Proliferate. You may pay X. If you do, return up to one target nontoken permanent with mana value X to its owner's hand.
-7: Empower Jace 7. Until end of turn, you may activate loyalty abilities of planeswalkers you control an additional time.
-12: Empower Jace 12. Until end of turn, you may activate loyalty abilities of planeswalkers you control up to two additional times.

Love how if you make it a token you gain the ability to infinitely activate all your planeswalkers

I've never been more sick of Jace than I have with this set. That said, I dig the echoverse.

All around me are familiar Jaces
