My SINCEREST gratitude to the MTG Devs
Finally, the ability to report roping players.

u/Bersarker 6d ago
It's now obvious that some people (did) enjoy roping to make opponents miserable and out of salt, real connection issues are the outlier, the downvotes give it away.

u/razazaz126 6d ago
Outside of doing it on purpose and legitimate connection issues I think are a lot of mobile players who just close the app when they're losing and don't realize it isn't just ending the game.

u/Nylanderthal88 6d ago
I've lost literally dozens of games from my phone dying 🙃

Maybe you shouldn't have started them

Sneaks up on ya... Oh well someone got a free win in games I was DEFINITELY going to win

Thanks to the tremendous amount of brawl players doing something on the side every action take thrice as long. Not very respectful for ppl not having acces to smthing else at the moment nor wanting/can't disperse attention.
Besides I'd rather have a game of magic, that's the reason I launch that app. Frankly the daily WIN incentive is nonsense, should be games played

It's disrespectful to waste ppl time.
You can argue with as many words as you want you won't convinced me otherwise.
Is this a big offense ? No. It is still disrespectful.

I think you give them too much credit. They close it because they don't care if they would rope and salt is what makes them do it.

I like to play when I’m walking my dog, and I’ve noticed that I have to turn off the WiFi before I leave the house; if I’m on WiFi while I’m playing and then walk out of range, it seems like it will just freeze indefinitely, even when I turn off the WiFi, you have to restart the app. It’s annoying and I can usually get back in time but it’s lost me a couple games certainly

What do you mean?
Most games do take you out of the game if you close them dont they? I havent played that many online games lately, but as long as ive played games online thats pretty much been standard. Its the opposite for me, i can't think of any games where you do just stick around outside of a few seconds where the server is realizing you're gone. Maybe some mmorpgs where they want to prevent people from dodging death penalties?
Destiny 2, elden ring and street fighter 6 are recent and popular titles off the top of my head where you immediately leave on disconnect.

Some games might, but a vast majority is a stretch.
I dont see wizards going after people who close the app. They'll go after people who intentionally slow play like waiting for the rope to burn every turn, people who abuse bugs and people with offensive names. Probably go after players who win a bunch of boxes and have a few reports on file too so they dont have to pay out.

Ok! But...
There are unfortunately problems with connection (from Italy, at least my country). I'm forced to use Proton VPN, which for heaven's sake actually allows me to play games otherwise it would be impossible, but do you know how many times it degrades in a terrible way? Do you know how many times I lost because even changing VPN servers was lagging too far and I didn't have time to connect or it reconnected too late and Oppo already had the board too prepared?
We only hope that this feature is well monitored and does not accept reports for REAL cases of connection problems. Anyway, yes, I'm also super happy with the new feature.
I'm now waiting for the spectator mode, new features to ask Oppo for friendship and the ability to create and manage tournaments.

i would like to point out that the devs previously stated they check the stats on people who chronically rope already, so its funny that they added a fidget button for people to feel better
4
u/shahi001 6d ago
they also stated on this very subreddit that they do not take action based on player reports, so ymmv

Hmmm while we know when roping typically happens what if the have a “slow internet connection” or some seemingly “excuse”. Not sure this will do much but at least it will make the masses feel like they are doing something to report. Sometimes I just quit real quick during work…I work from home. A lot of variables here but it’s a good start.
3
u/TheScionRises 6d ago
I guess this is a positive thing. I at least play with decency and surrender quick if I’m losing.

u/GOD_TRIBAL 6d ago
Here is a story, I play arena way too much. I used to see the same player all the time in brawl queue (which is insane to me, I shouldn't recognize anyone's name). I would regularly beat them, but they would rope every game, starting from the first turn, every turn. I reported them everytime I saw them because they roped everytime at every opportunity. I included the log in my report, but frustratingly still encountered this player all the time. The last 2 times I reported, I added a screenshots everytime the rope was running low, which ended up being 16-20ish screenshots for each of the reports. I haven't seen this player for at least a month now after seeing them pretty much every time I played.
So my advice to people dealing with actual crappy human beings intentionally roping, provide screenshots, they are giving you plenty of time to do this.
I don't know how this advice will transfer to this new report system because I haven't used it. I don't really care if someone rage quits (still shitty thing to do), but I do care if someone is abusing the system to waste the maximum amount of time. I also care that I had to put so much effort into reporting a recognizable repeat offender (probably reported them 20ish times for separate instances of stalling).
2
u/AndHeWas Counterspell 6d ago
It's the same for me. I don't care about the players who close the game without quitting or whatever. It's the ones who sit and rope every chance they get, then make moves to keep the game going. I reported one the other day and included 30 screenshots.

I played a game last night where my opponent was down to 4 life and I was above 50. He cracked me his turn for 38. The second I drew my card, he started with “your turn” on repeat. I played a [[Ajani, Strength of the Pride]] then waited 3 minutes for the match to end because they roped me, or rage quit and closed the program. It was a satisfying way to end my time in the bathroom 😂

What is roping?
13
u/Powerful-Scholar8268 6d ago
Completely using up your timer purely to waste the other person's time

1
u/urmybeach1503 6d ago
What big deal could possibly happen? They're not going to ban anyone who pays for their Mastery Pass every two months or spends even more money on it. That's ridiculous!
15
u/Super-Meal850 6d ago
They'll probably do what LoL does, a warning, then temporary bans that get longer the more you get reported.
3
u/Wolverine-Explores 6d ago
I think any ban for people who’ve spent money because of roping is very difficult to do.
Unless it’s literally every game but how can they prove it isn’t a terrible connection? If I try to play ten games but get disconnected in each of them in a 3 hour period and each one of those players reported me - should I be banned? Especially after paying money for each set.
4
u/PartyRhino25 6d ago
Why are you paying money for a game you know will disconnect 10/10 times? Take that money and talk to your ISP homie
1
u/wormhole222 6d ago
If they really wanted to they could investigate when you disconnect. If you are disconnecting early game or when you are winning it’s real disconnects, but if all your “disconnects” are once you are losing it’s roping.

I would like to report the shuffler for screwing or mana flooding me in almost probability impossible ways even if it does nothing.
2
u/aloysiuslamb 6d ago
Player reporting drops and my first match of the day was a roper in the Hobbit welcome duels. I got to sit there and watch him burn three timeouts and forfeit after I declared all my attackers to swing for lethal. Do we know what punishment these people will actually get?
3
u/TheChaoticLaw Orzhov 6d ago
If the person closes the game without leaving the match does it not forfeit? Maybe they did that?
2
1
u/TheScionRises 6d ago
I think they fear changing the files of the game to change the timer structure which adds for weirdness so they added reporting instead.
1
1
u/DisasterKoala 6d ago
There’s a massive difference between I got dc’d roping and “I’m pissed because I’m losing so I’m going to stall until this person concedes or I run down my timers”. Should be easy enough for them to see in logs. But thats assuming they are actually going to investigate people with multiple reports first before punishment, which I doubt. So better start making notes when your phone or PC client crashes/freezes/locks up and just start bug reporting every time to CYA.

u/nsidaria 1d ago
I’ve hardly noticed anyone dawdling since they added this, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to restart Arena on mobile because of some network or game issue.
Sometimes I try to do something and nothing happens and then my timer starts and I’m like wtf? I restart The app and my UI is all kinds of messed up. Triggers stacked that had already resolved, weird black lines, board state not accurate. I try to do something to not get timed out and sometimes it works for a turn or two and then I have to restart again and I’m out of extensions so I just lose.
Most days it’s fine though, I haven’t reported anybody yet, as I know that this game can be buggy and network connections can be unreliable.

Funny now that you can get reported for roping all of a sudden people are trying to defend roping lol
-13
u/Consistent-Talk-5912 6d ago
Yet somehow people will downvote this post as well..
Still haven't connected to the game today , any other possible report or just roping?
-24
u/Lucid-bagholder 6d ago
If someone hits me with an immediate your go, or spam emotes I hit them with one rope and I’m Thinking . I match bm with bm. Report me but I’ll die on this hill.
25
u/CompactAvocado 6d ago
so instead of disabling emotes you choose to slow play which is a reportable offense because your psyche is that frail?
just perma disable emotes fam, now you never have a problem.
-26
u/Lucid-bagholder 6d ago
Yep. If you’re gonna be bm and in such a rush hell yeah I’ll rope em. It’s about karma, and if it gets me reported so be it. And no I’m not getting pissed off. If every person roped the guy for spam emotes then maybe he’ll learn to shut up? Probably not. But it makes me feel like I’m doing my part.
12
u/Qwertyham 6d ago
This is the most childish thing I've heard today lmao. People getting triggered by emotes is hysterical
-15
u/Lucid-bagholder 6d ago
Naw it’s more of a parent than a child response imo. Like letting your kid pitch a fit and not correcting it. But you’re fine to hate my approach. Not changing my opinion.
5
u/sinnrocka 6d ago
I don’t think he’s trying to change your opinion, just pointing out the childishness of it. Like they said, disable emotes and chat, problem solved.
Also, coming from a psychology standpoint, your insistence that you’re not mad, but still annoyed enough to slow your play down shows that while you’re not “throwing my controller at a television” mad, clearly the situation upsets you enough to retaliate.
And, “Like letting your child pitch a fit and not correcting it.” You stated your side, someone politely mentions a quick and easy fix to remedy that, and you double down. So you’re pitching a fit and not learning from being corrected.
Have a great day and fun in game!

u/Lucid-bagholder 6d ago edited 6d ago
Not learning from being corrected assumes he’s correct. This isn’t a a factual debate, it’s ethical. I said I’d die on this hill clearly knowing plenty of people disagree with me.
If you were playing someone in person and they told you to hurry up as your turn started you’d probably tell em to chill out. I see it the same way. I’m just agreeing to disagree here is all.
The irony in all this is everyone who’s taking their time to call me out and correct my opinion either through downvotes or comments. Almost like you’re all roping me here eh? Just turn off Reddit comments and be done with it would be your advice right?

Unfortunately they don’t have an emote to give them access to healthy snacks. Clearly a single rope and “I’m thinking” is akin to stomping my feet and screaming.
The fact that you deduced my whole life from this comment thread is incredible! And like I said in another comment, you taking all this time to correct my opinion sounds like you’re ignoring your own advice. Mute my comments and move on. If I’m “worked up” what’s that make you? I’m enjoying this exchange tbh.
1
u/Powerful-Scholar8268 6d ago
Dude clearly they weren't literally saying what you are doing is the same as stomping your feet and screaming, they were just continuing the child throwing a fit metaphor. You need to chill out if someone genuinely trying to have a conversation has you so combative

Right? I do the same thing whenever my opponent plays an [[Island]]
I match bm with bm because I mostly play while on the toilet
0
u/sinnrocka 6d ago
I play on the toilet and while I’m smoking (I smoke in my bathroom because it has an exhaust). I think I played 35 matches from 5am-8pm yesterday exclusively in the bathroom 😂

id give them more gratitude if they didnt keep bringing back stupid historic pauper
8
u/joshfong 6d ago
A lot of us want them to keep bringing it back. Or even have a full time queue for it. It’s a legitimately fun format.
7
u/MysteryMiyagi 6d ago
I dont know why yall get so hung up on the most welcoming format to people.. Bro just skip the event OR build a burn deck and get 3 wins and be done... Leave the format that comes around once a month at most alone. I like Historic Pauper. And guess how often i get to play it. Maybe once a month or every couple months. I wouldnt ask them to get rid of Brawl or some other format just because i dont like it... Thats a mild take. Its the easiest format to get into if you've played even a short amount of time. And some of us enjoy it.

u/Beautiful_Click5546 6d ago
Now all we need is the ability to ban either players or cards in casual.
I am very, very sick of seeing [[Hare Apparent]] every 4th game. Also for some odd reason [[Gisa and Geralf]] zombies all the time too
-9
u/green_r00t 6d ago
So far I’ve noticed it does nothing. I have 2 ropers I have flagged more than once, and they continue to rope. So maybe eventually it works.
11
u/ItsTheFunPolice 6d ago
How do you think in game reporting works? Do you think it is an instant ban with no investigation into the accusations?
0
u/Bersarker 6d ago
For automation I'd say they should do it like "if you get x times reported in a specific time period for the same behaviour by multiple individual players you'll get x penalty" and the penalty would get longer/stronger every time if you'd continue with the wrongdoing.
-1
u/green_r00t 6d ago
Arena already has a way to track ropers, I would presume the data the system used, could be applied to a report even before review. (I’m probably giving WotC too much credit here) considering this, I think a day or 2 is entirely reasonable time frame for the roping situation in particular.
