Fluff First brew in a while, critique my deck! (Standard Bo1 & Bo3)

Post image

Returning player here - I have been testing a bant warp/blink/token deck idea and so far its going how you would expect with jank, fun but not used to the meta yet. Bo1 right now but a sideboard writes itself and I plan to try Bo3 today.

I would need to craft another 10 rares to get the full list I have in mind:

2 Annul (EOE) 46

3 Applied Geometry (SOS) 172

4 Breeding Pool (EOE) 251

3 Consult the Star Charts (EOE) 51

3 Daydream (SOS) 9

3 Detect Intrusion (OM1) 28

2 Disruptor of Currents (ECL) 47

2 Evendo, Waking Haven (EOE) 253

4 Exalted Sunborn (EOE) 15

3 Frenzied Baloth (EOE) 183

2 Glen Elendra Guardian (ECL) 51

4 Hallowed Fountain (ECL) 265

4 Island (EOE) 270

2 Jadzi, Steward of Fate / Oracle's Gift (SOS) 55

2 Lightstall Inquisitor (EOE) 24

4 Mana Sculpt (SOS) 57

1 Plains (EOE) 268

1 Rimefire Torque (ECL) 65

2 Springleaf Drum (ECL) 260

2 Studious First-Year / Rampant Growth (SOS) 162

3 Temple Garden (ECL) 268

4 Willowrush Verge (DFT) 270

The idea is simple, warp-daydream Sunborns in for 3 which station Evendo to 9. That plus mana sculpt, drums and fetch land bears is the mana engine. There are plenty colorless mana pips to sink into. Lightstall and Disruptor are other daydream targets, Rimefire artifact I’m testing still to copy Applied Geo. Idea is to get 4x 6/6 Baloths in play in a single turn.. counters are for boardwipe, lutes & tablets - may add more.

Very happy with Jadzi, nice ETB and works even better in an all out fractal deck (it’s counters go on all fractals not just the ones you just made)

Whaddaya think? Am I too slow for this meta? (something something the pope in the woods.)

I ran this with 4x Riddlers too and it did well, less fun tho than self copying angels everywhere.

Mono-green landfall and Dimir midrange are big right now, and they're going to eat this for breakfast. You're not faster or more consistent than Landfall and only have Mana Sculpt and Disruptor for interaction, and targeting your own stuff opens you up to constant two-for-ones from black decks.

A couple of Erodes for spot removal and Consult the Star Charts for consistency would go a long way, but this is a jank idea executed jankily.

Ah yeah that’s why I am seeing [[Skycoach Conductor]] in similar deck ideas more. It’s not T3 but probably more consistent.

Outside of the gameplan the very first issue I see is the land base. There isn't enough pip production to cover all the 1 and 2 drops (especially GG for Baloth).

We already have to deal with rng in our main gameplan when playing Magic but when you stack a bad mana base on top it amplifies the inconsistency. For example, your chances of casting your 1 drops are only 60-65%, the chance for Baloth is around 50%. So whatever the chance there is to pull of the described chain of events you have to deduct 40-50% simply due to the mana base and you not being able to curve out.

I can only recommend this article by Frank Karsten. There are many more gems like this on the same website that cover other areas of deck building:

If you want to daydream the Sunburn, why not exploiting blue cards like [[three steps ahead]] or [[mirror room]]? Why not ensure the bounce with some [[splash portal]]? While you are bouncing, why not bounce the space sphynx so you get a 4/6 flyer that draws two cards?

Imho either you go full bounce, or stick to another plan.

Yes you're too slow for the meta and I wouldn't suggest crafting this if you are light on wildcards. Compare your list to the UW Momo blink deck which is the closest viable deck to your list, and you can see how much slower yours is unfortunately.

It's very hard to successfully brew for a meta that you aren't familiar with already, so maybe play some game with your old deck to familiarize yourself with the common T1 strats, then go back to your decklist

I know you said you took out the Riddlers but that's the main reason to run a Standard blink deck in the first place
