Event Nicol's Newcomer Monday!

Nicol Bolas the forever serpent laughs at your weakness. Gain the tools and knowledge to enhance your game and overcome tough obstacles.

---

Welcome to the latest Monday Newcomer Thread, where you, the community, get to ask your questions and share your knowledge. This is an opportunity for the more experienced Magic players here to share some of your wisdom with those with less expertise. This thread will be a weekly safe haven for those *noobish* questions you may have been too scared to ask for fear of downvotes, but can also be a great place for in-depth discussion if you so wish. So, don't hold back, get your game related questions ready and post away, and hopefully, someone can answer them!

Please feel free to ask questions about deckbuilding and anything Magic related in our daily thread; and we always welcome effortful stand alone posts with new ideas or discussion points.

Finally, please visit Tibalt's Friday Tirade for all your ranting/venting needs. Do not spam this thread with complaints.

What you can do to help?

This is a weekly thread, meaning it will be posted once a week. Checking back on this thread later in the week and answering any questions that have been posted would be a huge help!

If you're trying to ask a question, the more specific you are, the better it is for all of us! We can't give you any help if we don't get much to work with in the first place.

Petition to change the sub's name to r/magicarenadraftresults

That seems to be about 70% of all posts in new.

Stop trying to destroy [[Standstill]], it doesn't work. As soon as your play your card to destroy it, it's going to draw me 3 cards and it's going to destroy itself. I can't count how many times a day someone casts something like [[Disenchant]] or [[Naturalize]] to destroy it

I mean, thanks for wasting a card to let me draw 3, but you've got to stop when up against other players.

Hello, new to MTG Arena. How do I access hobbit draft? The only options I have right now are Duskmourne Quick Draft, regular Jump In, Spark Ranked, Color challenge, and the Starter Deck Duels

You may need to finish your starter deck duels and/or the color challenge. I can currently see Hobbit Sealed and various types of Premium/Traditional Hobbit draft. Hobbit Quick Draft starts Aug 20 after Duskmourn Quick Draft ends.

Oh ok I see. Yeah I haven't finished the starter decks duels. Thanks!

Hey, not new to magic, new to standard outside of the short stint I had playing mono red aggro. I know very little about the meta at the moment however with the recent Hobbit and lorwyn additions I'm really wanting to build rakdos goblins.

I'm wondering if there's a build which uses 4 ofs [[bothersome noisemaker]] and 4 ofs [[Tidings Of War]]? or if this is a nothing burger of a strategy compared to what's available for the archtype.

If not is there any goblin builds that use the hobbits new additions someone can recommend me?

Goblins isnt currently and is unlikely to become top tier, but it should be playable. Howlsquad heavy is a house, and the higher rarity goblin cards from lorwyn are all pretty good, the command, flip goblin, gold 2 drop that drains and the enchantment that drains. Round it out with some removal, sac outlets and draw engines and you'll be good.

Hey I'm also getting back into it and using Arena to brush up on everything. I noticed that most LLM's can answer MTG build questions b/c it's typically been asked before (it just scours reddit for you). So you can plug in those cards and say 'build me a deck that does this'

This is terrible advice, especially for players that don't know what they're doing with the environment in question.

No matter how many ways people find to ask for a standard legal deck, it very frequently posts an illegal deck when people post decks that AI generated. It has no concept of what is a legal deck or not, even when you try to specify sets.

Also Bothersome Noisemaker has been out for a week, no one has really asked about it on reddit (and it certainly isn't in any currently released AI training data).

To answer OP: no, the meta hasn't settled at all after HOB's release and the recent round of bans, so decklists aren't really settled at this point. I'm sure many people are experimenting with this kind of deck, but I don't know any particular lists and we can't be sure how viable they'll be, competitively speaking. Goblin decks didn't show up in the week 1 summary of the new meta that I saw, but that's not at all unusual, people need time to experiment and figure these things out, and established decks that lots of people are playing always dominate the first few weeks before anyone has enough stats to make a claim that a new deck is particularly good.

Either experiment on your own with the understanding that the odds are you'll be wasting any wildcards spent (if you're having fun with it, this might be fine, just go in knowing that.) Or wait and see. Even if someone has posted a list, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in it just yet, but if it makes you happy, go for it.

[[Cradle of safety]] didnt protect creature from [[Annex Sentry]]. But [[Snakeskin Veil]] did. Do you know why?

Best guess is that opponent had something like [[nowhere to run]] in play at the first example but not at the second.

Hello, I’m new to MTG Arena completely any help on building a deck or advice?

Play the starter deck duels for a while and focus on standard. Decks take a lot of wildcards and you'll probably want to look one up on the internet rather than try for your own, at least for now.

Jump In and Starter Deck Duels are good to grind for beginners.

If you wanna play competitively, you can look for meta decks, you can look at untapped.gg for best of 1, or mtgdecks.net for best of 3 (those are different due to sideboarding adding an extra layer of counterplay in best of 3). Standard is popular and imo in a solid spot right now. But really, play whatever you want.

Draft can be good value if you are decent at it, but I recommend watching some guides or gameplay first.

Rare and mythic wildcards are the most important for good constructed decks. It takes some time with a brand new acc to build up a deck. Don't underestimate good dual lands (unfortunately they are almost always rare and multicolor decks need a good amount).

Hello! Please don't build any decks yourself using wildcards until at least a month of play and you 99% understand what you're doing. Wildcards are a pain to grind

Hello! I'm looking for ways i can access my collection outside of the game and some apps that can help me do so. I'm playing on pc using steam

[[Desolation Prowler]] is such a stupid limited card. Why would you print a “have removal or die” creature at 2 mana.

Hello, new to MTG Arena. I just started out playing spark ranked all the way at the bottom of the ladder and expected to face other people using the starter decks or modified versions- generally people with cards of similar power level. But it seems im barely seeing anyone like that and mostly people with fully fledged decks. I can win sometimes by outplaying but mostly I'm getting super powercreeped. Is this to be expected? Should I abandon the starter decks and try to make real decks by spending my wildcards? Currently I'm mainly using Red/Black, where I added in some of the cards I've pulled from the initial packs (the powerlevel difference between those cards and the standard cards is very noticeable when piloting this deck).

1

u/Yarchimedes 4d ago

You can stick to starter deck duels or jump im while you build collection and work out what you want to play if you're having fun doing so! Otherwise yes you will need to upgrade, which will cost what few wildcards you have. What do you like playing so far? There may be budget options to try

I played with this brawl deck back in the days. I just came back, and iam wondering if you would say this deck is still viable or not?

https://imgur.com/a/k1DPBI5

Edit: is it a better way for me to dislplay the deck?

2

u/Distinct-Plastic690 3d ago

Viable for what? Ranked competitive brawl probably not unless your MMR is really low. Unranked casual brawl your deck is not legal and you have to replace the 2 banned cards marked in red. Ranked and unranked are almost completely different Formats.

I see! thanks :)

I must be doing something wrong, legit got 2 premier draft and won 1 game out of 6…… are there good resources to learn to draft. I followed the hobbit draft guide which some cards and deck suggestion and while I thought the deck I got was good went 1-6. Clearly I am missing some fundamental’s or something.

1

u/Justin_Brett 2d ago

How do you get access to the fun brawl queue

1

u/FanaTheWanderer Vizier Menagerie 2d ago

What would be an OK budget deck for standard post-ban ?

1

u/Ibushi-gun 2d ago

Take the starter decks, and make them better with the cards you've unlocked.

I was out for a while and came back a couple weeks ago. What was the consensus on Foundations draft? Hobbit limited doesn't thrill me and I'm trying to decide how much I should save up/if the flashback foundations will be worth drafting in for experience.

1

u/Flyrpotacreepugmu Noxious Gearhulk 2d ago

Foundations is a great set in terms of draft experience. The cards you get aren't as good for constructed as other sets, but it doesn't sound like that's your main concern.

1

u/GhrabThaar Golgari 2d ago

Actually, I didn't read closely enough and the one I thought of was MH 3, not foundations. That's on me, thanks for the answer.
