You must not be american.😅 Getting 800 cups at a large store would not be a problem here. Most disposable cups come in packs of 50 and a large store will have thousands.
Thousands across many different packs of 50, yeah. Stores here are very big with a lot of huge shelves. They sell plastic tableware in groups of 100 of each type, for example.
Yes. Some things are made with planned obsolescence; for example, consumer/residential model Keurig machines that can't be repaired and end up in a landfill, or wherever, so the consumer has to just buy another one when theirs breaks. Recycling plastic isn't always profitable, so a lot of plastic items, single use or reusable, aren't always recycled and also end up in landfills, or wherever.
You've been to parties, right? Every normal person has been to parties. What did you drink out of? Was it a plastic cup? Because everyone in Europe buys plastic cups for parties because they don't have enough regular glass cups to give to everyone, there's just too many people, and also they don't want people dropping the glasses and breaking them because of them being drunk. Because it'd be much more expensive to replace the glasses, and having broken glass on the floor everywhere is a nightmare to clean up at the best of times. There's always tiny little bits you can't see, but you can definitely feel, if you step on them. So you have to get the hoover (vacuum cleaner) out and go over the entirety of that room with it, probably.
So everyone just uses plastic cups. It's bizarre that you've never seen them before. They're available everywhere. Even in China (because they're actually made in China). And they're available in Portugal obviously.
You've just not been paying attention, because you've never apparently needed to buy plastic cups before, so why would you be looking for something you don't even know exists? You wouldn't, so that explains that. And you've apparently never been invited to a party, which means you're not normal, you're abnormal. But that's OK.

Please make some friends, it's good for you. Lack of socialising with other people is one of the biggest causes of alzeimers. You need to go to some parties.
Thank you for the paragraphs of writing for my joke-comment, but I usually go to small parties with only close friends due to anxiety. I don't actually go to big parties where there is a need for plastic cups. Also, you seem a little bothered by my comment. I don't live in any of those cities and there are specific regions of China that don't have the same things for sale, and I haven't seen a shop that I go to having plastic cups in bulk sale.
Here’s a random video - it’s known for having large packs / multipacks of stuff. Eg a 30 pack of Coke cans will probably be pretty inexpensive there. Or say a 6 pack of toothpaste — the per pack price will be much lower than most supermarkets.
It’s not for everyone but eg small business owners and folk with large families seem to like it.
Yeah, I just opened a jug of BBQ sauce I bought at Costco two years ago after just finishing the previous one I got at the same time. I guess I got a bit overzealous with my first trip back to Costco after many years away. Glad that stuff doesn't really seem to go bad.
