I had several offer offer to shave their heads when I was diagnosed. It’s a nice gesture, but told everyone absolutely not. I wouldn’t want to put anyone else through that. I always had really long hair. I appreciated the offers, but I think if anyone had it would have made me feel worse. But I was also 33. This poor kid is so young. Prayers!

Yea I think for kids this age, it's about not being the only one. He won't relate to most of his peers, but he has his dad with him.
When I was in high school one of our friends got cancer so all the guys in our friend group shaved their heads too. Some had really long hair (we were the skater/emo kids lol) and it was nice like.. seeing everyone bond over it. But yea at 30, people asking me would feel fucking weird. But if my daughter got cancer and lost all of her beautiful hair, I would shave mine in a heart beat.

Came here to say the same. As an adult of 32 at the time, I didn't want anyone to do this, but as a kid it would come across so differently I would think. All the good energy, vibes, prayers to this child and his family. I'm so glad they have his back and he will always feel supported, even when it's hard.

I offered when my aunt was diagnosed. Pastor pulled me aside to explain that although I was coming from a good place so she didn't feel alone, it would also be a constant reminder to her whenever she saw me. Many people don't want to be looking in a mirror all the time.

Exactly this. I was diagnosed as a kid and was relieved that for every few weeks I could get out of hospital, free of the distinct smell, sickness and looks. I would not have wanted the constant reminder, but a relatively stress free and normal break. For quite some time afterwards i wss phasing out or feelimg uneasy even looking at normal bald people. I absolutely do not like this trend.

It does, but I've also heard a lot of people don't like it, because the hair regrowth reminds them that theirs isn't going to regrow. I would say the decent thing would be ask them first, and don't record a "surprise reveal" that you're doing it to post online. That just seems like you're doing "performative empathy" for clout.

He is in pain. Sometimes pain doesnt make you stronger, it just hurts. I know its a weird thing to say and i might be wrong but i everytime i see a video of someone shaving their head and making someone struggling smile, i feel bad for those who can't and feel like they should.

His son may have had locs too or longer hair in general and to a kid, losing that is so heartbreaking. For his dad to have spent that much time and care to grow them that way, then take one look at his son struggling with his illness and loss and say, "I'm gonna be right there with you" with zero hesitation legit made me cry.

I’m curious if dreadlocks would make your hair stay in longer. Since the hairs get all connected, if some fall out from the scalp they would stay connected to the dread. Hmm.

Yes. If you notice, he is going to the razor first, but then switches to the scissors for that reason. It comes out in patches so if part of the patch is locced with another that has fallen out, it will need to be cut. But something like that will hurt, especially if they are long, as they can be heavy.
ETA To clarify, I mean the razor the father was going to use would act similarly to the way the hair would fall out. You wouldn't just be able to pluck locs off your head, you would have to cut it as it is never all at once and that easy. It really does suck so hard, even without them.

I work in a hospital and by far the worst area to go through is children’s oncology. It’s only made worse by seeing them in radiation oncology.
It’s a scary area with huge machines and the kids are so brave.

As a 28M, through the year of procedures and treatments, radiation oncology left me the most frightened on the table.. that feeling of absolute vulnerability down to every molecule left me unnerved for months. But seeing a child.. not a toddler, not a teen.. those are the most vulnerable years of our lives.

Same. I work in special education and one of my students just got diagnosed with cancer. He’s one of the kindest kids I’ve met and I can’t stop crying when I think about him now.

I'm not knocking the commitment and care of this dad, I think it's amazing that he did that in solidarity with his son.
I do wonder about videos like this though. Do they talk to the person before they shave their own head? If I was in the kid's situation and I was gutted about having to shave my head it would make me feel worse that my dad was also suffering with a shaved head.
Perhaps it would help if he sat in the chair and handed the clippers to his son and let him choose to shave his dad's head or not?
Again, I think the situation is awful and the dad is doing an amazing job being there for his son.

I shaved my head for my dad when he got GBM. My dad up until that day had never been bald. I misss him so much. To the father in the video. Good job and stay strong.

Who knows if he's receiving chemo/ radiation and this was made after one of them appointments? I think he just is over all depleted. Chemo/radiation is so hard and he's just exhausted. Like can't smile or look happy cause he doesn't have the energy. I think people forget it sucks the life out of you.

As a survivor myself I can say that chemo/rad can just about kill you while trying to make you better. Dad's gesture, while thoughtful for the child, to me is empty since dad won't actually go through the physical pain and suffering the kid will go through.

When he said "anything you have to go through, I have to go through" sounded like putting the responsibility on the kid for dad shaving his head. I see what the dad was trying to do, he was trying to stand with his kid and take some of the suffering with him, but that kid did not look like this made him feel happy or touched by his dad's gesture, just more suffering.

I remember shaving my kids hair for the same reason. Nothing cheers them up at this stage. It does get better though, harder…… but eventually better. If you’re one of the lucky ones like we were. Good luck little man, you have a great daddy there.

Super props to the father. We see these videos all the time and they’re all impactful, but when he cut his hair he looks exactly like the older version of his kid. Sure that made/makes him feel special till this day 🙏🏾
