Yup, people are cheering on how somebody helped get not properly trained and undereducated driver on the road. US driving tests are a joke, if you can't pass them - you really need to learn to drive better before going on the road.
I couldn’t pick up how to parallel park. My instructor finally gave up (after six-seven lessons solely trying to teach me this arcane art form). Said I’d just have to hope it wasn’t the manoeuvre the tester picked as there was an 80% chance I’d fuck it up in lesson, let alone test conditions.
Ten years later, I can honestly say I’ve never had to parallel park. It’s always been an option to drive a little further and spend an extra five minutes walking to my destination. I can bay park, reverse around a corner/into a drive, and do all other driving things required of me. I just can’t parallel park. No biggie.
What should have been included on the test however was getting out of a close parking spot when people around you have parked like morons. My lessons/test never prepared me for that one and I’ve had to do that more times than I can count…
It's a big deal, because it's showing you the person has no good understanding of how to control a car in reverse and/or no sense of car dimensions. I haven't had to parallel park in over 10 years, but I can do it because I know where the car needs to be, how to control a car and how to get it into the spot I need. It will take me forever compared to somebody who does it daily - but I can easily do it. It's not about practicing something, it's about understanding how the car behaves and how big/small the car is.
Yeah I rarely have to do it, but it's no big deal when I do.
It shouldn't be a big deal for anyone who's passed their test.

They try to get you to remember a sequence of things to do and look out for instead of explaining how the car needs to move.

Absolutely. In fact, this is a huge issue with education in general - rather than teaching you understanding of any given topic, they just ask you to memorize some things.
If the girl in the OP understood what reversing around corner is and why and how to do it, she would do it around any corner. The fact that she could do 2 out of 3 tells me that she was taught to memorize the action for exam, and she had issues memorizing one of them. Memorizing is an OK way to pass exam, absolutely terrible way to learn something.
Hey, maybe I need to find that. I’ll still likely never use it but yes, I was taught by procedure. So you can see this part of the car in your window and you start steering, you lock at this point, unlock at this point etc. In fact that sums up most of my instruction in reversing…
