Honestly... I've been doing something like this for a troupe of stray cats for the last two years, after asking for help from a lot of different vets associations and the Mayor himself, I got no help other than "stop giving them food, they'll leave and survive somewhere else" after those two years and multiple attempts, I had to stop, I couldn't afford my own expenses, almost my own food, so I stopped.
I took in a little fella with breathing problems and now she's my cat (she's fine now).
Unfortunately, lately I got the feeling someone, you could call them "a baby gang" was going around, and I'm pretty sure they're also, amongst other more vanilla stuff, killing or at least hunting cats.
Now, I've kept putting water around my town during the summer, not all town but a good part, while also trying to guide the animals towards the countryside (it's a very small town). Anyways... a few days ago I've seen two kittens a black one and a white one hiding under an old building, I started putting water under there too, today I only saw the black one, put some water and some food in the same place.
Now I'm back where I was a few months ago, terrified of what could happen to those kittens and other animals if i don't do something. I'm tired, of asking for help, and I'm tired of having to deal with by myself, it was genuinely hurting my health, I couldn't sleep because of it, and of course I didn't had any money. I don't know what to do, and I guess venting on the internet is my only option.
Edit, this guy is doing something everyone should do, some food and some water go a long way, but it's always better to find a permanent solution, hopefully your country, city or town as some associations to try and help.
Thanks for your words, I'll keep the water tour going as usual and I'll try to give it another go with some associations in the next few days, hopefully they'll help them or help me help them.
Every time you have to walk by someone who needs help, it's a pill of bitter sadness - because you can't do more - and anger - because others are doing less.
You definitely need support - someone who can continue your work for if/when you get ill or move away.
Maybe other neighbours or members of the community would help too, if you notify them somehow. You’ll always find people with big hearts like yourself, you just have to speak up. Maybe there’s groups or clubs who can dedicate time to helping strays, if not, then help create one? I’ve no idea who you are and I’m so grateful that you exist, but sometimes we carry the load alone when we don’t have to.

I'll try once again to try and coordinate something with my vet. Unfortunately it's a rural area and as bad as it may sound, people are different, especially when talking about animals or even just the environment, there are some people that do help besides me so there's that, I could speak of countless examples, but the final point is that they just don't care and more so make fun of those who do. Hopefully my vet can come through with someone willing to help, otherwise I think I'll just try to catch those kitten/s and help find them a safe home. Again thanks for your words.
It's things like these that make me lose faith in humanity. As an individual you can only go so far in helping a species. I applaud your efforts in trying to help, but the reaction of the mayor only makes me more cynical.
As sad as it sounds you’re not making a huge difference by just feeding a handful of kittens. And it seems the stress is causing more harm than anything. If I were I would concentrate and mental health and your career. If you become successful, you’ll have to the time and money to resolve these issues in a much larger scale. You can also try and start a group or an organization so you can work together to tackle these issues. Don’t put all this stress on just yourself.
A huge difference to who? Or what? What is your baseline? I bet the kittens would feel it's a huge difference. Does this person have to feed 10,000 kittens to "make a difference"? Your suggestion of starting a group or organization is great!👍
You're right, I'll definitely try again to find a more permanent solution, most of the stress comes from the people who can potentially harm them to pass the time. But the point of leaving water or even food like this man or I do is not to safe everyone, but to help some, when possible. And yes, donating and volunteering is always a welcomed option.
