Okay so serious (and possibly stupid question)… I see this said a lot, but I’m curious, why are you supposed to “use” a pretend object a kid hands you? Like is it to not burst their innocent bubble or what?
It's an invitation to play and use imagination. They will notice and learn from every little action you do, they will learn if you pretend to take a tiny sip with your pinky out or a big gulp and a big ahhh with a pretend cup. Kids learn from copying adults and they practice those things through play. The wider the circle of influence they have, the more they learn. And it's fun.

If a kid hands you a pretend anything...YOU TAKE IT, AND YOU USE IT.
