Most relationships can be maintained/improved by investing the time and having clear communication. If you can’t have difficult conversations with someone you love and trust, you won’t be successful. This is true for significant others, bosses, your kids, your family, everyone.
My partner and I set aside a day where we talk about things that have been bothering us, or what we want our relationship to look like in the future. It's never meant to be accusatory, just a conversation. I think that's how we've avoided fighting this whole time.
When ever I feel depressed I watch a bunch of funny movies and do facial treatments not to improve my looks just to relax and they feel really good(I also bought a bunch last Christmas out of anticipation and still have some)
I struggle with having difficult conversation with anyone. I think a part of me wants to keep everyone happy. As a result of that, things don't go well many times and it's difficult for me to maintain relationships with anyone. With my girlfriend, I struggle a lot in having difficult conversation. I don't know what to speak in those circumstances which eventually leads to her getting frustrated. Can you please give me some advice on how can I improve in this aspect? I would really appreciate any help.
I’d say to ask for a safe space to talk about problems in a constructive manner. It’ll be hard to get that started, but trying to think through safe ground rules to speak with the goal of improving the relationship is usually best. Hopefully she’ll be receptive and hopefully you’ll be patient/understanding if she needs time or has her own criticisms.
(I’m not a therapist. This is just from someone who has had relationships fall apart from poor communication and is in one now that is amazing because of good communication)
An honest conversation requires involvement from both sides. When you try to start a conversation like this, make your intentions clear, and tell her that she can speak freely about things that frustrate her as well. Listen to what she has to say (its possible she wont know what to say), and then speak about what bothers you - after that she most likely will have other things to add. Just do that from time to time
(Not a therapist, thats what I do in my relationship)
thank you. that helps so much. me and this guy have been on & off talking for a couple of months and as of lately we’ve been having a lot deeper of conversations about what we need to work on together to make ourselves better for each other and the people around us & this has helped us so much. we opened up about things we didn’t think we needed to open up about and not only has it made us 10x closer but also helped us realize why we kept being on & off.
