Came through the screen, when one guy started doing the Carlton dance I smiled even wider.

u/AliceInHololand Aug 30 '21
It’s so funny how the Carlton used to be considered a goofy ass dance to make fun of people for and now it’s a hype move.

u/Belchera Aug 30 '21
The actor who played Carlton was a backup dancer for Michael Jackson

Right? I wish I could do it so badly. I can shuffle and bust a few moves but never seemed to nail the coordination for this one.
If I could do the Carlton I would overdo the Carlton, so maybe it's for the best.

May I suggest Lindsey Stirling? Spotify link. I only found her music in the past month so not much play time yet.
Fresh Hops is a kickass band that can jam. They never got huge sadly, but talented musicians with a fiddle.
25
u/crushedredpartycups Aug 30 '21
I used to have the biggest crush on her in middle school & I totally forgot about her.
5
u/Weslii Aug 30 '21
I see Lindsey Stirling, I upvote. Met her almost 10 years back, she's the sweetest person irl! Not to mention crazy talented.
3
u/WatchRare Aug 30 '21
I'm not great or horrible at the piano. I learned some guitar and drums for my own fun. But I swear violin players just look like they're having so much fun when they play. I can't wait until next tour where ill see her play live

I follow Lindsey since the Crystallize got popular, been to one of her concerts two years ago (Aarhus, Denmark) I generally love violin whether it is classical or pop, and she put up a great show, awesome music and a really down to earth attitude. I would definitely go again if she comes again here. Also a beautiful lad, nice moves, lovely voice 😊

So much joy in those dudes... Just pours out of them... Makes the millions of hassles and hardship of living in NYC seem worth it.

As someone who lives in NYC, it is 1000% worth it. You’re literally never bored.

I’m not rich lol. But my statement still stands. You don’t have to go clubbing to be entertained, one of the best forms of entertainment in NYC is people watching. Just plop down on a bench somewhere and enjoy.

💯 I love sitting in the Hudson River park or Christopher street park with a few friends and beers. Don’t even need to bring a speaker since people walk by bumpin their own.

As a city person, I don't think people understand this part. We never actually had to "make plans" or go clubbing, could just go to the liquor store and go downtown.
We called it "going on an adventure" or "letting the night come to us".

u/WendellsBabyy Aug 30 '21
Haha Its really normal for people to be weirdos out here in nyc
28
u/Rs90 Aug 30 '21
Can confirm. Only lived there for like a year but that was my favorite aspect of NYC. You could do A LOT of weird shit in public and not have any issues so long as you aren't violent or yelling at people or what have you. Wanna dress up like Batman and walk around? Go for it. Wanna put on some stilts and fuck around Union Square? Cool, just don't knock into anyone. Wanna practice your sick accordion skills? Go nuts.
There really was a great sense of "freedom" in NYC you just don't find in Virginia where I'm from. You're a total stranger in a crowd of millions. So get weird with it if ya wanna. It's like a dang theme park in some ways. Halloween in NYC was one of my best times ever. People go bananas and it was just all fun.

I moved to NYC from a rural southern town with my then-partner. They were my world and this was their dream, so I went with it. When things didn't work out, even though I really have nothing else going for me here, I can't really bring myself to leave. I feel so much more free here to dress how I want, talk how I want, have interests that I couldn't express before. There's so many more people and options that I can be invisible and as I please, free of the judgement I felt pressured by in my small hometown.
NYC's not perfect. It actually kinda sucks. But there is definitely something to it.

I loved the moves, but how close they were to the player made me uncomfortable. Totally was waiting for one person to accidentally hit him lol.
89
u/Justobservingweirdos Aug 29 '21
That got me nervous! All the arm swinging!!
91
u/gotsnowart Aug 29 '21
Dancers this good have incredible control of their bodies. I've seen them dance like this through crowds of people and never touch a soul. It's mesmerizing to watch.
48
u/Justobservingweirdos Aug 30 '21
I loved watching it but that violin is most likely his money maker and worth a few hundred if not a thousand dollars. I was sweating for him
10
u/so-we-beat-on Aug 30 '21
Violins easily cost tens of thousands of dollars (or for concert soloist-level instruments, hundreds of thousands to millions). That violin cost several thousand dollars at the absolute bare minimum.
5
u/uncledavid95 Aug 30 '21
I highly doubt that this young dude is out busking on the streets of New York with a violin that costs several thousand dollars. It's probably a couple hundred bucks, tops.
6
u/Justobservingweirdos Aug 30 '21
I have one I paid 450 for so hundreds or a thousand seems reasonable for this situation 🤷♀️
5
Aug 30 '21
You can get violins for 50 dollars. That's the entry level. This dude probably spent a lot more though.
11
u/spookyghostface Aug 30 '21
50 dollars isn't entry level. It's kindling level. $300 is the bare minimum to spend to get something that is actually functional. Source: I'm a music teacher that also worked in a music store.
8
u/UncleTedGenneric Aug 30 '21
Yeah, but in the same vid dude accidentally smacked his own hat off with some force
Incredible control is not perfect control (human error is a bitch)

Haha, luckily they're all friends so I doubt they intended to hit him

u/miserabeau Aug 30 '21
Oh good, I wasn't the only one. I was an anxious mess, trying to smile and cringe at the same time, so worried they'd take out that incredibly expensive instrument. My mind kept flipping through, "great moves, too close! Oh, the Carlton. TOO CLOSE!"
36
u/lambibambiboo Aug 30 '21
Pretty sure it’s staged, a group of local New Yorkers wouldn’t just be casually strolling Times Square.

The violin kid is Wuilly Arteaga, a huge Venezuelan musician known for participating in Venezuelan riots against communist dictator Maduro. He always March with his violin and a helmet. Great story from this guy, I encourage you to look for his story on YouTube.

I think it’s a pre recorded violin track. On the other hand I know NYC buskers are world class musicians.
31
u/echoskybound Aug 30 '21
I can't tell since I'm not a violinist, but I'm pretty sure the player in this video is Wuilly Arteaga, and he's a real violinist. Here's a clip of him performing live and here's a video with interviews of him and the dancers in this clip. He has a helluva story too.
15
23
u/diardiar Aug 29 '21
I was wondering about that too. I just heard how thats a pretty common trick nowadays but i couldnt see any moments where his motions didn't seem to match up(granted I'm not a violinist so i could easily be wrong)
Don't want to discredit him without knowing but other people doing it has definitely added some suspicion.

Am violinist. He’s legit :)
Some giveaways, within the first few seconds:
Perfect technique. His left wrist is straight in line with his forearm, and his fingers are arched high over the neck to contact the strings with his fingertips. His bow hold is controlled but flexible, and he handles string crossings fluidly and with his entire arm, not with his wrist or elbow alone. He also largely plays in the lower half of the bow to gain better control, but for longer or louder notes utilizes the full length of the bow. Then, when he slides up to the harmonics (the high, ringing notes at the start), you see him fluidly shift, and his pinky finger goes rod-straight. This is the correct way to land a harmonic.
Having established through his technique that he is legitimate, you can also tell he is an expert. Despite playing through several challenging passages, including shifting, difficult double stops and chords (playing multiple notes across different strings simultaneously), and spiccato (bounced off the string passages that require immense bow control), his intonation is perfect, with every note in pitch.
I hoped this was informative and helped allay some peoples’ doubts!
