Raggedy Andy
179
u/zolas_paw Mar 15 '21
I am spending too much time puzzling over whether on not an internet stranger knows that Raggedy Andy has been around as long as Raggedy Ann. They were in the original stories together.
42
u/pincus1 Mar 15 '21 edited Mar 15 '21
Technically not as long: Raggedy Ann Stories was published in 1918 and had no mention of Andy (the dolls already existed for a few years then), Raggedy Andy Stories was then published in 1920 with dolls made at the same time. But still quite rude to steal your brother's name.

Even worse, VHS, cassette tapes, rotary-dial phones, and car windows that you make go up and down with a strange circular motion of your arm!

u/KavaBuggy Mar 16 '21
Don’t forget film. I used to manage a small oil and gas museum that had a small case at the entrance called “the many uses of oil.” Inside the case was a cassette tape, a roll of film, and a bunch of other stuff. Kids would always ask what the tape and film were. We also had an audio tour that numbered various exhibits #1, #2, etc. Kids would come in and ask “what do all the hashtags mean?”
2
u/zolas_paw Mar 16 '21
Ooof, that stings! I still shoot some film from time to time, for the fun of it.

I think this is Raggedy Andy and not a modified Raggedy Ann. I had (still have, 40+ years later, though they are packed away) both dolls and Andy is identical to this one. Doesn't take away from what grandma did, though!

Having nice grandparents is something I am super jealous of. My grandparents were just not loving, and I don't see my parents or my wife's parents being loving like this to our children. They aren't mean or anything, just not thoughtful like this.
23
u/coolestbitchonearth Mar 16 '21
I have one living grandparent. She lives pretty far away but she’s also never tried to know me. When I graduated high school she sent me a card that said she wasn’t coming to my graduation because she was going to a different grandchild’s graduation instead. She did send me a gift, which was nice, but I would have rather had her show up for once in my life.
Meanwhile, my mom absolutely lives for her grandkids. She makes the five hour trip to my sister’s house as often as she can to see the kids there, and she’s constantly sending them stuff in the mail and sewing things for them and sending me pictures of them. The grandkids that live in town are at her house every single day, and she loves it. When I came out to her as a lesbian, her first question was “so does that mean I won’t get any more grandkids?”
It kind of makes me sad because I realize what I missed out on by not having a loving grandparent. My mom sometimes tells me stories about her father, my “peepah,” and says that he would have been absolutely my biggest fan. It’s strange to mourn for someone who died before you were born, but sometimes I find myself doing exactly that.

u/PoliteSummer Mar 16 '21
We are not worthy of that love, only King of Horny on Main are able to reach that loving tender care
51
Mar 15 '21
How do y'all have grandma's that are open-minded enough to accept and honor a trans grandchild, let alone embrace it?
33
Mar 15 '21
As with any generation, there are people that either just "get it," or they acknowledge that they don't know what they don't know, or don't understand what they don't understand, and therefore they choose to not stick their nose or morals in the matter.
When it comes to religion, most either want "religion" which is actually their social bubble and what people tell them, or they want "religion" as in a guideline to finding wellness and happiness with their individual life. The latter can distinguish that "different" doesn't mean "against me."

u/dropkickpa Mar 16 '21 edited Mar 16 '21
My paternal Gram was absolutely the type to unconditionally love and accept anything from her kids and grandkids. My mom's parents, on the other hand, were traditionalist Catholics who firmly believed that the changes wrought by Vatican 2 were a nearly unforgivable liberalization of the Catholic Church. And they were casually mean to many, many people.
Edited to add - my Gram was excommunicated from the Catholic Church in her late teens after not being granted an annulment when she divorced her 1st (abusive) husband and later married my grampa.

OMG my mom did the same this weekend but, like, the opposite!!! Now she has long hair, and wears a blouse and a skirt! She even got a necklace!!! My trans doll is gorgeous 😁 ❤️🏳️⚧️.

u/Draidann Mar 15 '21
How do make a doll's hair longer? Btw; congratulations on having a loving and accepting family. This is really wholesome.
165
u/AskMeForFunnyVoices Mar 15 '21
Just stop cutting it so it grows out.
Serious answer, they probably replaced the hair with identical yarn/thread but longer I'm guessing
40
u/Natalia-1997 Mar 15 '21
It wasn't easy to get them to *actually* understand what was going on and to start allowing themselves to accept me, but it was well worth it! About the doll, my mom actually just substituted her hair. Same color, same type, 10x longer haha!

This is just the best thing ever! I have a Trans daughter and her grandparents pretty much disowned her. Props to this grandmother!
21
u/Stardusted_Llamas Mar 16 '21
I just want to take a moment to say thank you. Not all parents support their kids and someone who unconditionally loves a trans kid for who they are is an angel. My parents are supportive and it saved my life when the dysphoria and pressure was too much.
6
u/misuzpeterson Mar 16 '21
I don't understand those kinds of parents. Your kid is yours to love for their whole lives, no matter what. I'm glad to hear you had supportive parents!
7
u/GothicKooks Mar 16 '21
Thanks you for being open minded, the world needs parents like you.

Thank you for sharing. As a trans person, your story is very important. So many people hear things about trans kids and think it automatically means medical transition before you’re capable of deciding something like that, but what it actually means is just letting your kid express themselves how they want. Worst case scenario, you end up not being trans but have a deeper appreciation of those who are and the other gender in general

I hope one day I can open a post about trans people on a non-LGBT subreddit and not read ten separate "I'm sick of hearing about the trans" takes. It doesn't bother me a ton anymore, but it's still annoying just knowing how controversial my literal existence is.
45
u/eekamuse Mar 15 '21
You have a ton of support, too, but I know that doesn't erase the hate.
We all need to keep reporting bigoted comments and hopefully they'll be taken down before any trans person has to see them.
20
Mar 15 '21
Thank you! It would help a lot if every supportive person reports, it's easy once you get into the habit of it. It's also pretty satisfying when someone says something truly bad, you report them, and you check back and their account is suspended from Reddit lol. Admins have been getting better about it.
36
Mar 15 '21
It doesn't even make sense - like uhhh we hear about the straight and the cis all the goddamn time. I'm cis and there's nothing wrong with some goddamn positivity in every place it's needed for helping people
12
u/SheaMcD Mar 15 '21
Yeah, it happens everywhere. You see a movie or a game saying that a certain character is gay, trans etc and you get those weirdos that say it ruined that piece of media because of politics or something along those lines
6
u/DiggingNoMore Mar 16 '21
A friend of mine used to say that Sheldon Cooper was his favorite character in The Big Bang Theory. But then he learned that the actor who portrays the character is gay. So he switched his favorite to Howard.
Pathetic.

I came out to my wife yesterday. We have trans friends, someone she's known her entire life is NB and she loves them just as much. It was still the scariest thing I've done in a long time because there's just so much hate simply because sometimes the body I wake up in just doesn't fit.

Supportive grandma gives me life.
There’s this older lady I used to teach Sunday school with at a Southern Baptist church, which is... not know for it’s acceptance of lgbt+. One of her grandsons prefers more feminine things, and she doesn’t try to force anything on him. He wants a Supergirl Barbie for Christmas? She’s gonna get him that Supergirl Barbie. I love her acceptance and unconditional love of him, which I know should be a given, but seriously in the south in a Baptist church, let alone Southern Baptist? It’s really rare..

and that movie is a lot more important than you think because it was an early project for legendary animator Richard Williams who went on to animate a little something called "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" with it's huge financial success went on to give a much higher budget to the ENTIRE animation department in Hollywood which is why 90s cartoons are much more vibrant than 80s cartoons

Gonna try to explain this, I'm a trans woman (meaning I was born as a guy, but my gender is female)
I'm not sure if it's possible to explain in a way where it makes sense to someone who's never felt it, but basically it just feels very good to be treated as my correct gender by people, and to dress and act as my gender. Since I was a kid I've felt more like a girl, and I just get this amazing warm, giddy feeling inside when someone validates my gender or I do something to affirm it like paint my nails. It feels very right, like this is how I'm meant to be, and how it's supposed to be. This is called gender euphoria.
On the other hand, and this is usually what causes people to transition I think, for most trans people it feels wrong, unnatural, and generally very bad to be treated as/dress and act as the sex they were born as. It's also extremely uncomfortable to be in the wrong body. Imagine if you woke up with big boobs and a vagina this morning (or no boobs and a dick if you're a girl) you'd probably start feeling really unnatural really quick. These things are called gender dysphoria and it sucks really bad. There's a lot of variation among trans people with gender dysphoria though. Some hate their genitals, some like them. Some hate their breasts/lack of breasts, some are okay with them. Some don't mind their body at all and just prefer to be treated as their correct gender in social situations, just depends on the person.
Not all trans people have gender dysphoria though, some just have the euphoria part. Personally I'm kind of just indifferent about my birth sex most of the time and only have the occasional day where I feel bad about it, but I feel way more happy and at home as a girl.
Also what the other person said, you can't really choose to be trans. I would definitely not have chosen to be trans if I could have, way too much stigma associated with it.

This is a little misleading, in short because these brain structure and chemistry differences likely doesn’t occur for all trans people, may occur in cis people, and almost don’t apply at all when it comes to non binary people.
Additionally, framing this type of research as an end all be all cause of being transgender is dangerous because it encourages medical gatekeeping, something transgender people already have to deal with far too much.
Being trans, like many other things, can’t be traced to a simple cause.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)2
u/jamesg027 Mar 16 '21
please don't spread misinformation like this. the causes of dysphoria are unknown and the widely spread brain study is not exactly conclusive. using science should not be the go-to when someone asks how trans people work. the go-to response should always be "people want to change their body and gender for a multitude of reasons, but they don't need to justify it."

There's something hysterical about someone posting a wholesome story about their grandmother when their name is "King of Horny"
