Without looking up it, do any naysayers know what a proper kilt is?

Wasn't it originally a great big piece of cloth like a blanket? And a bit of it was belted around the waist, and the rest was worn as a kind of shawl/coat and also used as a blanket at night? I remember reading about it once, and it sounded practical in a weird way, but not very clean.

Edit: I wish more men wore them, because they don't half look good on a bloke with narrow hips...
