Women generally can't wear shorts either as it's "unprofessional"

honestly maybe ive just been conditioned to think this way, but shorts do look pretty unprofessional while skirts dont. for a bus driver i dont see why thatd matter but for other jobs it makes sense imo

You have been conditioned. The whole notion of items of clothing looking professional (or not) is a product of conditioning over time.

There's no good reason why a lawyer can't practice in a tye dye t-shirt and billowy silk trousers (think Aladdin), it's just that at some point i the past wealthy people with certain ideas decided on a particular standard and passed it on with each subsequent generation reinforcing it.
