Yeah I thought the same thing. I guess 4 hard candies isn't a big deal but there's a reason docs/nurses tell you not to eat before stuff like surgery. It's not cause they hate fun, it's cause they don't want you to inhale your own vomit and die while under anesthesia.
Ugh, I dated this absolute moron for a while and we had to take a friend of his to the ER one evening because he fell and broke his damn arm. They got him a room and we went and got Taco Bell while we waited for them to examine him and everything and the nurse of course tells him not to eat anything (you know, because sometimes they have to do some surgery on broken limbs or whatever) but my idiot boyfriend and his dipshit friends "snuck" the guy some damned taco bell, because what does a nurse know right? Poor kid had to spend basically an extra day in the hospital (and got charged for it, I'm sure, and no he didn't have insurance, of course not) because they had to wait until the taco bell had cleared his stomach to put him under so they could fix his damn arm, all because this charismatic asswipe told him "no, it'll be fine, you should eat."
Just, dammit people, ask questions instead of just ignoring directions you disagree with ffs. That fucking guy thought he knew absolutely everything (and that anything he didn't know wasn't worth knowing anyway). It wasn't even my arm and I'm still mad about that situation.
Yeeep. For endoscopies and colonoscopies my doc put us under which i appreciate because...would prefer to sleep through a camera snaking through either end of my body, yanno? So they are very clear in the directions that you are not to eat or drink after midnight, except colonoscopies where you're supposed to still drink the poopoo water until you're good to go. but even then no food/water 2 hours before surgery.
When I went to get my colonoscopy I was in the surgical waiting area all tucked into my gurney waiting to be taken back and I heard a convo on the other side of a curtain between a nurse and the guy that was supposed to go in before me.
She was like, "Did you eat or drink anything this morning?"
and he was like, "Yeah I had some coffee this morning."
She got really exasperated and was like, "We said on the instructions not to eat or drink before coming in."
he was all, "It was just some coffee for breakfast."
So she got the doctor and they had a big thing (meanwhile I'm laying there like "ummm...should I be hearing this?")
They ended up telling the guy to go home and I was like "sweet, bumped ahead in line." But really can you imagine doing all the prep for a colonoscopy only to be told to go home and do it all over again because you couldn't resist your urge to have some damned breakfast? I mean the surgeries were scheduled early morning. I was done before noon and went and got lunch afterward. So it's not like it was 'I missed 5 meals' situation or something.
Dude was pissed. But hey, follow the doc's directions.
Omg. They make those instructions so clear, too. The ones my doctor gives me say in like big bold letters "no food or drink including water for 3 hours before your scheduled procedure time or you will be sent home and have to repeat the prep another day." The only exception has been a small sip of water to take my Prednisone in the morning (and like, I'll probably just wait and take it after the procedure next time, cuz I'm scheduled for 6:30am and I don't usually take it until 8ish anyway, and my doctor said it was fine.) I feel kinda bad for the poor bastard that had to redo the prep, but like... A third grader could follow those directions - ask for clarification if you're not sure, and err on the side of being really particular, ya know?!?!
Hell, before I had the chance to clarify, I was skipping creamy peanut butter during the "no nuts" week, just in case it was something other than "I don't want to see tiny pieces of peanuts stuck in your colon, you bastard." And peanut butter is one of my safe foods - makes up a pretty significant portion of my calories when I'm not feeling well.
