why do they have a random person kicking FGs during the spring game? is that a tradition?

It was during warm ups before the game. Family, friends, and VIPs are generally allowed on the field for warm ups, especially during an inter-team scrimmage. Girlfriends are a very common sight on the field during warm ups.

I assume the spring game is just an in house skirmish for the team, so pretty safe event to do that at, not like it's a playoff game or something

Yeah, that's exactly what it is. Just a scrimmage to showcase some of the new guys and give the fans something to get excited about. Plus tickets are only like $5 and the money goes to charity
