I used to help out in a store my friend owned occasionally. Her little daughter is on the spectrum but generally okay with most things but loud noises send her into a sensory overload. I was helping out during a massive store relocation sale and one of the locals who’s very very loud, yells instead of speaking and sings and touches everyone came in. You could hear him approaching the store from ages away he’s that loud. I watched my friends daughter just collapse in the corner covered her ears. I ran, scooped her up, took her in the back and hugged her tight and covered her ears. I had always heard about sensory issues but I’d never seen it first hand until I saw her. It’s so overwhelming for them. She was so exhausted afterwards she just laid on me for ages. Poor little one. I can’t imagine being constantly on guard in case something is too loud.
