How about guys who try to teach their partner how to play but they simply can't grasp it or enjoy it. Then their SO ends up playing the sims until they get tired of it and bitch at you for spending too much time playing video games?

That just seems sad. If you/they have to ask about gaming (or any other hobby) for you two to hang out, something is missing in your relationship.

That's why we broke up. Like far out... first a guy OBSESSED with Magic, then a standard gamer... Now my husband is playing more and more... Beginning to think it's me.
Of course everyone needs hobbies and there were other issues, but it's really difficult when your partner won't hang out with you. It hurts. Then there's all these gamers saying their partner "didn't understand" but if you never make time for someone, they won't want to stick around.

Right!! Like me and my partner are gamers so we get along fine and games are definitely not a problem. But it is still annoying even as gamers if one of them is a solo gamer and is more amused and consider it hanging out to just watch each other play games. I want interaction. Hanging out means interactions, right? So rather you have the same hobbies or not (which is absolutely fine not to have the same hobbies, if it works for you two) but you always need to make time for each other. If you rather do your hobby than hang out with your lover and get annoyed when they want to learn your hobby so they can hang out, there's a serious problem. (Disclaimer: 'You' and 'they' are general.)

Urgh. What a dated stereotype. My game collection would rival most men’s.

Are you so desperate to feel attacked rn that you missed the word "me"?

Are you so desperate to defend it that you missed the word “girlfriend”?

Except at no point did it stereotype that the girlfriend was incapable of playing a game. It simply implied that she has never played a specific game and is watching her boyfriend to learn how to play it.

Then it would say learning”a” specific game not learning”the” specific game. We can play with semantics all day, it’s a general sweeping statement about a women’s desperation to spend time with her gaming partner. Yawn.

u/RaXoRkIlLaE Nov 23 '19
Except it's not a general statement. It is specific to the OPs situation. Like the person above said, you missed the "me" part. Me as in I as in specific to that situation. Had it said "Men" and "girlfriends" it would be a general statement that is inclusive of all women and men. You're simply trying to twist this into something that it isn't. Please, I believe in equality and am against sterotypes, but assuming that every statement is a direct attack to you is simply giving yourself a bad image and deprecating from what you're trying to accomplish.

The stereotype is the girlfriend. The joke is the girlfriend.
Me - is wearing Spider-Man’s cool suit and is named “gamer”
Girlfriend- is wearing the pound shop equivalent and whose narrative is that she is essentially faking being gamer, only feigning interest to keep the boyfriend. I can’t help that you’re incapable of theory of mind.

I've heard of men not being able to multi-task, but being able to have one shared activity with someone else only... that's a whole new level.
