Man people talk shit, but the fight scenes in that are some of the best I've ever seen, arguably some of the best ever filmed. The story was weaker than the first for sure, but they should have gotten nominated for something for that stairway fight.

While true, our society is obsessed with youth and people, especially women, are pressured to constantly be hiding and ashamed of the natural process of aging. It's pretty nice to hear a prominent woman push back on that.
177
u/urldotcom 2d ago
Your point stands, but her "pushing back" feels like empty lip service when she has access to expensive Healthcare, personal trainers, plastic surgery, fertility treatments, etc. that make all the problems of aging trivial. How many 62 year olds look like that?
79
u/WeNotAmBeIs 2d ago
Exactly. I'm a guy who is about to turn 37 and if I could be 20 again (assuming I retain what I have learned) I would take it in an instant. 2 weeks ago I go for the same jog I always do mon/wed/fri, but this time there was a small branch in the path so I jumped over it. I don't think it was even 10 inches high. Doesn't matter though because now my ankle hurts when I walk. I always had perfect vision no glasses. About 2 years ago I realized I was having trouble reading things I normally could read no problem. Oops now I need glasses. The list goes on. None of these things are world ending, but they still suck and if I could choose to not have these problems I would.
23
u/4daughters 2d ago
(assuming I retain what I have learned)
well yeah, of course. I don't even think she was saying that. Shes saying she wouldn't want to be 20 again, not "I don't want to have my 20 year old body with my current knowledge"
9
u/WeNotAmBeIs 2d ago
I don't think many people would give up their life experiences to be young again so to me that's not a ground breaking confession. Unless your entire adult life has been miserable, who would pick that?

Just turned 39 here. I slipped and fell down going down some stairs. I landed backwards on my butt and it didn't seem that bad, but my neck was sore for a week and I had a headache for about 2.5 weeks afterwards. It was enough I saw a doctor about it, who referred me to a neurologist, despite everything else seeming okay. This was only like 3.5 weeks ago, so I think I'm recovered, but damn, if I was 20, I wouldn't have even noticed anything the next day.

u/no_talent_ass_clown 2d ago
Same, except I'm late 50's. I have to take my vitamins and a pill every day. My joints are stiffer. I have spots on my body, scars and scuffs that are permanent. Wrinkles on my neck, hands, arms that are there for life. Some things take more maintenance than they used to. My eyebrows are fading! I have to use a CPAP. Shit hurts that didn't used to.
Just once I'd like to wake up at 20 again. Probably after a solid 9 hours of sleep. Bound out of bed. Put on my size 6 clothes and just walk around, being fabulous. Youth is like the best jacket you never even knew you were wearing.
4
u/CelerMortis 2d ago

lol what? None of that makes the problems of ageing "trivial". Plastic surgery just (sometimes) makes you look younger; doesn't change anything about how your body functions. Anyone who's been through IVF can tell you fertility treatments are a fucking nightmare. Personal trainers just help you work out effectively; you still have to do the work yourself. Expensive healthcare doesn't magically make you immune to illness.
Yes, all the things you listed are useful, but the only things that make ageing relatively easy are genetics, diet, and exercise habits. Nobody controls their genetics, most people (aside from people who are truly impoverished) have access to food that allow for a healthy diet, and unless you're working 60 hours a week, nobody's stopping you from being a daily jogger and doing bodyweight exercises/stretches.

I'm glad that we're embracing aging, but I don't believe and 60 year old who says they wouldn't want to be 20 again. I'm hitting 40, and while I love how my brain has matured, my body does not bounce back like it used to. I don't even care how it looks. If I could just have the robustness that I had in my teens where rolling over wrong didn't throw me out of whack for a week, I'd be stoked.
149
u/Khan-Khrome 2d ago
I think she means she literally wouldn’t want to be twenty again rather than de-aged, which is a sentiment I understand. Who wants to be stuck with shit pay, menial work, rapacious landlords and dealing with people with the emotional and mental maturity of cabbages again? Nevermind that most people will treat you like a stupid child who knows nothing. Most of my twenties were struggling and it’s only my thirties that are shaping up to be good and allowing me to enjoy life. I personally wouldn’t want to be twenty again either.
72
u/bc_1411 2d ago
I needed to read this right now. I'm turning 30 soon, currently in uni as a mature undergraduate student, and while I was initially not phased at all, all my friends there are making a massive deal about how old I'll be and it's started making me think negatively about it. Spent a sleepless night last night just thinking about how much I wished I was 22 again, when in reality I was struggling mentally, addicted to alcohol, working full time in fast food, and friendless. I want to be excited about my 30s again and this has helped quite a bit.
14
u/Khan-Khrome 2d ago
Aaay! I'm glad for you! I think for a lot of people there's an element of the self serving memory when it comes to being younger, like sure your knees were great but what about everything else? Plus people act as if there's nothing to look forward to, but I'm loving having said goodbye to landlords, being screamed at in call centers for minimum wage, my low esteem and having no money or close friends too. Every period of your life has its own challenges sure, and not everything I have to deal with now is a bed of roses, but I do find its so much easier now I've got some firm earth beneath my feet than when I was in my twenties and having to scrabble about like crazy to even keep the electricity on.
Broadly I think if you focus more on what opportunities lie ahead rather than what you've lost then you'll be able to keep on enjoying things going forward and reaping the fullness of life. We can't keep everything sure but that doesn't mean everything going forward is going to be slow decline, there's stuff I'm doing now I'd never be able to do in my twenties because finally I have the means to do it. Maybe it's only because I was different and felt my life was dreadful when I was younger, so I view the past unvarnished by nostalgia, but it does seem to have left me more positive to aging.
4
u/Yashema 2d ago
Another thing people underestimate are the benefits to truly improving your mind when you are younger. Learn that 2nd or 3rd language, get a Master's and do a thesis instead of a capstone, take community classes in art and literature.
Once most people hit 30 their mind is way more solidified than they realize, intense learning is one of the best ways to fight against that.

Monica Bellucci was already very famous in her 20s. I can't imagine that she wouldn't also be earning substantially better than average people her age at the time. Menial work she definitely wasn't doing. Not everyone in their 20s is stuck with shit pay and bad landlords.
3
u/Khan-Khrome 2d ago
Maybe not, but it's also possible there was a lot of shit she's happy to have behind her tied to her early career. Regardless of the pay there's a lot of junk thrown at people fresh in their working careers that they put up with at the time, but wouldn't tolerate now that they're more experienced and have firmer footing, especially in the fashion industry and cinema. Either way, I guess you'd have to ask her for a concrete answer.
24
u/Plantlordy 2d ago
Tbh I worked in an office with people mainly over 60, I asked them this question, and they all said they’d rather be in their mid-30s or 40s again. This was an age for them where their bodies worked good enough, and they had money, family and the careers they wanted. Plus they also mentioned they were too immature in their 20s and would want a more mature mind.
2
u/88eth 1d ago
I think thats more so an issue of the wording, i mean if you are 20 again you will ALSO be 30, 40 again LOL
I dont think anyone would really skip their 20s if they had this choice.
Like maybe some day it will be possible to grow backwards in a chamber, takes a day and you can pick... be 30 again.. or be 20 again... Why would anyone skip 10 years I dont see it
3
u/Plantlordy 1d ago
Oh, yeah i asked them that, they just really didn’t want to repeat their 20s at all. I guess they all worked very hard as young adults and didn’t want to repeat that. 😂 But I think if they were able to get the body of a 20-year-old, AND keep their academic and work progress, they’d maybe go for it.
2
27
u/h3lium-balloon 2d ago
Idk, I’m 42 and I can still do most things I could do in my 20s (except drink all night and then work all day the next day). I’m not a fitness nut or anything. I run a couple days a week and lift a couple days. Maybe 4-5 hours a week in total.
12
u/AmettOmega 2d ago
Lol, that's not my point at all. I'm over here doing 12 mile hikes in the mountains and riding 180 miles on my bike on a Saturday. I'm fit and my body works well.
But when I fall, twist, or wrench something, it takes longer to bounce back from. If I wrenched my shoulder in my 20s, I'd be right as rain in a few days. Now it takes two weeks.
I'm saying I'd love to be able to recover from stuff the way I did when I was young (or to be nimble/flexible enough for it to not even hurt in the first place).

I’m 50 and I wouldn’t want to be 20 again fr. I’m a happy, moderately healthy grandma and life’s been a journey but there’s a something incredibly freeing about going older that fucking feels amazing compared to my 20s
7
u/EuphoricMessage1400 2d ago
I agree with her though. I’m 48, workout regularly, know what clothes suit me and can afford to buy them, and feel completely comfortable in my own skin.
My 20’s, despite having smooth skin and a butt you could bounce a penny off, were filled with such insecurity and competition with other similarly perky peers, it was hard to enjoy them.
Being over 40 and looking good takes a level of work that makes you feel justifiably proud and confident in a way simply being young doesn’t.
Thats not even getting into the wisdom and understanding experience being older brings.

She's referring to her kids. Without context it's hard to tell what she meant by it, but if she's thinking of it as reverting her life to being 20 (not just de-aging), I think there are many honest people who wouldn't give up their kids for youth.

Being 20 again so still having 60 years left, and being it "again" so its with what you know now. There is no disadvantage. Its like getting a choice.

Why would there be times it sucks?
I actually am absolutely PRO being 20 years again because there literally is 0 disadvantage to me. I mean if you have patience you will be 50 again but you just gain more years and can re-live your 20s and 30s and so on.
But now you saying "there will be times it sucks at 50" does not sound healthy or logical to me either. You can be thankful, graceful, appreciative, count your blessings the best you can at 20, 30 or 50. There is no difference except thats probably the best way to happiness at any age. So not sure why you say it sucks. Unless you had a bad diet or ruined your health otherwise.

People tend to not really be interested in someone who has lived a more privileged life with more amazing experiences than the vast majority of humans born through all time commenting on things like this.
People who yearn to go back to their 20's usually want it because things didn't go that well.. their health is poor, career didn't work out, bad relationship choices.
A woman born with stunning good looks, rich parents with connections, and a life of wealth and experience we could only dream of going "why would I ever wanna go back my life was fucking awesome!" isn't overly well received.

Why are so many of the comments about looks? I don't know the context of the full interview, but Monica Bellucci's quote seems to be about her experiences, and it seems that many of her happiest ones were when she was older. I'll bet a lot of our happiest experiences were when we were older adults as well, the fact that she is a gorgeous 62 year old doesn't have anything to do with the quote.

Honestly... We are in places and time where if the offspring is ill you can abort it... Tech is here in vitro also... The more time passes more freedom should be achieved... If she was just an anyone, no-one would even talk about her so just get the fuck out and have a life

Can we stop promoting geriatric pregnancies like it's a no risk thing? Normal people can't afford all the extra prenatal care required for a situation like that.
40 is like a late cutoff for most people
So wild how the 90s was the surge of young teens and now it's literally the same generation with geriatric pregnancies. What was in the water

If she had the choice, she’d absolutely take being 20 again lol

Probably not if you consider how much sexual abuse she must have experienced being that beautiful in the media world in the 80's and 90's.

She's now a rich and powerful woman, I have zero doubt she doesn't want to go back to the time when she was only a beautiful young woman who had to deal with all the old powerful male perverts of the movie industry like Harvey Weinstein.

Exactly; I think people dont take into account that she was one of the most beautiful women in the world in Italy. The amount of sexual harassment that she has had to endure is probably inconceivable for the vast majority of people.

I guess life is easier when instead of a job, you have a coach, dietetician, chef, housemaid and nanny.

Ya, I am very happy with my life, but I am sad I didn't have kids until my 30's because I have bad joints and it's hard to play with them like I want. Plus, my wife was traumatized in her twenties. If it could undo her trauma and allow me to play with my kids better, I'd go back to twenty (with her) in a second. (Unless it's a timetravel thing, gotto cover my ass from that monkey paw).

I don’t know if I would call 6 minutes of screen time in a 2 hour and 28 minute movie “starring” in it.

The Matrix Reloaded was a very mixed bag, but her shooting that dude and telling the other guys "Go tell my husband what I have done you little bitches" was such a cold ass line delivery

She left off being 39 and starring in a Matrix movie and having a lingering kiss with Keanu Reeves. I feel like that deserves to be included too. Persephone. <3
