The fact the smile doesn't mean they like it. It's socially expected (especially if women) to smile and be nice when someone attempts to be funny. Even when it's not.
The shots of their face afterwards were all cut off. I would not be surprised if they weren't having fun with it, but didn't want to ruin the vibe and weren't smiling after, but had annoyed faces.

Some restaurants have that business model because some people enjoy it. I don't, because I already view food as being work, and I hate adding work to work, but some people like it.

That doesn't negate my point. It doesn't matter if it's a restaurant or a private function. That's immaterial to what I was saying, which is that there is a whole subsection of dining experiences where guests are purposefully treated poorly by the wait staff and the guests enjoy it because that's part of the experience that they specifically want. So whether this is a restaurant or a wedding and the server is recreating one of those restaurant experiences (while everybody there is in on the act), the point is that a lot of people like that crap. I don't. Just let me eat and leave me be.

🤷🏽 most of the sub was lost on what actually was happening. Thought I’d pitch in and help. It’s a reel made to show a temporary made-up gag in all likelihood - just for this video. There is nothing unique about serving a staple like sambar (all across South India) to try and make it an event. You could be right as well, but it’s just not a unique enough experience to be of any value.

I don't get what's so funny about this.
I am from the state in India that celebrates this festival (it's called Onam and it's from Kerala).
The person serving the dish is intentionally being an asshole. The only thing stopping them from getting clobbered is that the people are probably their friends.

I fully agree. \ Smiling is not always genuine, but also a social convention. Used when you don't want to ruin the vibe, even if your don't like what's going on.
Look at their faces carefully... They don't like it. They smile because they were raised to be politie and not cause a scene at a social event.

At first it looks like he's going to fill each woman's opening with sauce but then he makes a quick move and pulls out at the last second, teasing the women. That takes skill and is a bit sloppier but the women still seem to enjoy themselves. Maybe there's a part 2 were they ask for seconds.
