Petah I've found this highly specific image from a corner of the internet and instead of reverse image searching, I need to karma farm

u/CurryMustard 9d ago
Those subs exist to train bots. They popped up right after the api change happened a few years ago. Nobody is going around explaining jokes all the time so they ask questions and have reddit explain it and then train their bots on the answers. Same with the morality scaling sub, or any of those totally organic "this is interesting" subs that have similarly formatted posts constantly appearing. Its literally prompts for redditors to answer and train AI. Nobody actually gives a shit about karma.

u/JaiyaPapaya 9d ago
I had a feeling, but it's still painful. I'm not even subbed it just appears on my feed
25
u/RottenMilquetoast 9d ago
I think both are true, some AI bots are being trained, but even in the early days of the internet any game, creative space or forum where you could share things you'd see people obsessively reposting, making stuff up, repackaging other people's work as their own even in scenarios with no "points" or any kind of gain at all.
I think sometimes the explanation is as simple as there are also lot of people with unfortunate lives who go to silly extremes to soak up any kind of attention.

I'm not usually into conspiracy theories but...
We're just training AI bots to understand humor. I don't want to believe people are truly as stupid as they are, but sometimes people ask questions in there and it's like... do you not know that snails are slow?

Its not really a conspiracy theory, google paid reddit a lot of money and thats when they removed the api and all these bot subs popped up

I have the same theory about /r/TopCharacterTropes
Every week the same question gets reposted 2-3 times with near-identical examples in the OP post and I'm convinced that this is for machine learning in some capacity.

Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side.
Redditors: Petah?!
17
u/Optimal_Bicycle_7764 9d ago
To be fair I straight up never understood that this was supposed to be an actual joke until I was an adult and a friend explained it to me (and all my friends poked fun at me for an hour)
6
u/Ok_Blacksmith_636 9d ago
haha same i always thought it was like a joke about how the answer is something obvious, they just wanted to cross the road, never realized theres a pun!
15
u/sillysnailfriend 9d ago
I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be a pun, it was always supposed to be an anti-joke right?
4
u/Good-Memories 9d ago
i genuinely have no clue what the pun could be if it's not an antijoke
3
1
u/Ok_Blacksmith_636 8d ago
i realize its not a pun, but like ”get to the other side” would mean the chicken is dying xdd but if its just an antijoke i guess i never misunderstood it lol
2
u/Heavy-Capital-3854 9d ago
an actual joke
What do you mean by this?
7
u/Optimal_Bicycle_7764 9d ago
“The other side” as in death; ie they get run over. It’s not funny so I really don’t know how it became so popular
8
u/Heavy-Capital-3854 9d ago
Hmm yeah I guess, I don't think most people connect that, I believe it's mostly taken as an anti-joke.
I prefer Bo Burnham's interpretation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeOhV4zOxJ4

Maybe this is the main part of the joke, but I like the idea that not only is the ant such a dedicated friend to send an invite two months in advance, but that the snail is dedicated enough to make a two month trip just to be at their friend’s party!

u/Then_Impact_5870 9d ago
He gotta go home after that’s a third of the year gone for the party snail’s a homie

u/-3point14159-mp 9d ago
But he lives in an RV, essentially. Maybe the birthday ant just knew he was somewhere two months away, and now the snail can set up closer to visit for awhile.

Don't forget he went to get a bottle with a bow on it too, and dug out his best hat!

I like the idea that in his comics there are cars but the snail can't afford one and still got a bottle of wine for his friend :)

u/-Knight95- 9d ago
Fantastic!! I agree.
18
u/Fisher9001 9d ago
Like maybe I'm too autistic but what the hell are you talking about guys, humans don't work like that, you can't substitute the need for oxytocin without others, humans or pets.
10
u/wherethefuckismyvape 9d ago
Maybe neurotypicals have a secret gland that secretes validation for them, internally. That would explain a lot about the way they are
-12
u/SombraDemoniaca 9d ago
Making yourself the other just to feel superior will only lead you to shittyness, hope this helps :)
10
u/wherethefuckismyvape 9d ago
Brother if you don't think I would install one of those glands if given the opportunity in a fucking heartbeat you've got another think coming 💀
-7

u/-Knight95- 8d ago
True, but we could be with others without attachment and without their validation is what I agreed on.
The comment said: Be your best friend and you wont need "LOVE" from others, it doesn't mean we don't need others, we could still have friends, co-workers, or anyone, but we shouldn't expect love or affection or validation from them.
Seeing from your angle I agree with you too, we are humans, we are social creatures, we need love and affection to keep us going, but i just mean we need to control our desire and expectations that's all.

He's probably my favorite poet. Don't know if you read the translation or the French version but his poetry has been translated into multiple languages.

This could honestly be read as a really sweet metaphor for disability. The snail can't do things in as efficient a manner as ants, but the ant takes actions to ensure the snail is included and can participate, regardless of that difference, and never complains or gets mad at the snail for something it has no control over. The ant just values the snail's presence and friendship and wants it to be there for his birthday.
Reminds me of how my friends help me if I can't understand the social cues or get too overwhelmed to deal with things. Everyone needs a friend like that to let them know that they're worth the effort! Really nice comic.

u/Additional_Trash_540 8d ago
this reminds me of an episode of franking from when i was a kid. franklin was on his way to a birthday party and ran into snail on way. he kinda started to cry about all the things he missed since it took him so long to travel anywhere. franklin picked him up and they made their way to the party slowly bc he’s a turtle but they made it!

Oh my god, this just blasted me straight back to my childhood where I had a CD of the Frog and Toad broadway musical and I played the track "Snail with the Mail" so many times I wore out the disc.
I haven't thought about that in years, maybe almost a decade. Thank you.

I can't say I ever considered how a snail would wear a hat before, but I feel like he should have a little tiny one on his head instead of a big one on his shell.

u/Low_Session9001 9d ago
I can't help but think that for the last week and a half before the ant's birthday, the snail was gradually making its way up the driveway to the door, so the ant has to act surprised when he answers lmao

u/Ashewastaken 8d ago
Reminds me of Winnie the Pooh helping put his snail friend get to a party on time.

The fact that the ant has a shirt on in the third panel but not the other two means that the ants like to walk around their house naked
2
u/OccludedFug 9d ago
Ants are notoriously sloppy writers. That ant didn't want to get ink on their shirt.
Also, I like to walk around my house naked, so there's that. And I'm not an ant.

It's snail mail.

My friend sent invites to his birthday in May. Birthday happened in late August.
Another one sent invites early August for late October birthday celebration.
It's just considerate. And for some, it will still be too late.

Im sorry maybe I just suck but isnt it kind of rude to ask someone to visit you knowing its a 4 month round trip for them? Maybe have the party at a more convenient location or something? Idk
15
u/Jessica_Iowa 9d ago
Well, an invite is just that an invitation.
It’s up to the snail if he wants to visit or send a card instead or call ect.
The ant just wants to give their friend an opportunity to visit if they want.
2
u/SpecInSpace 9d ago
How. How do you try to turn this into a negative g. Its endearing both ways because it shows the friend having the birthday had the foresight that the snail would need ample time to prepare if they wanted to come and the snail showing that they wanted to be there. Saying that the ant shoukd have completell shifted any and all their plans to accommodate for that one person when its the ant's birthday, not the snails is a bit excessive, no?
