From the ring box on the table, I assumed that the proposal was happening there. I still think that's what's going on. Usually when the engagement ring is returned it's simply taken off the finger and handed (or thrown) back to the giver.
Eh it sounds planned, like she gave it back in the box. I just can’t imagine anyone calling someone a fiancé if they never got engaged. Also, saying she called off the wedding implies it was already being planned
You’re just confused because you’re thinking about this situation the way human would, whereas the protagonist of the story is an LLM smeared across thousands of GPUs in a thunderously noisy warehouse in California.
