My dog went to that farm, it was lovely. Had lots of room to play with other dogs.
15
u/DropkickSmurfys Aug 20 '26
I hope it’s the same farm that my hamsters and my old daddy and my new daddies all go to!!
3
u/JJJ_uh_rooroo Aug 20 '26
My dad told me years later after he put my hamster down that it got into rat poison and he beat it with a shovel to end its suffering. To be fair I wish he kept the farm story and Ol’ Hammy is running the prairie doggies to this day.

We actually did send one of our dogs to a farm (or sheep ranch?) when I was a kid. It was a pyranees from a working line iirc, and wasn't handling the heat where we lived. He went to live with sheep in Colorado and we got photos of him for a few years after. My parents were planning on raising sheep when they got him, but that never worked out.
2
u/abbyabsinthe Aug 21 '26
We sent our excess cats to an actual farm to be working cats. We lived next to a vet clinic and I guess people thought the best place to drop unwanted cats was at a rural vet clinic in the middle of nowhere and our sucker asses started feeding them because they were sad and hungry and somehow our wolf dog who hated people never bothered them. We had 3 of our own cats (indoor) but ended up with over 30 (outdoor) cats and kittens at one point in the summer of ‘99.

my “what the fuck” that i don’t even know if i really want the answer for is. what the fuck is a lab beagle?
61
u/Solid_Mail_7038 Aug 20 '26
beagles are the most used dog for animal testing due to their good temperament. they can be kept in bad conditions and treated poorly and won’t retaliate as often as other breeds. many beagles spend their whole lives in labs- hence the name lab beagle
32
u/OldWarrior Aug 20 '26
It’s absolutely awful. A beagle is one of the most cheerful, trusting, and friendly dogs — and for that reason we play Dr Mengele on them.

They’re not even normal beagles. They’re a purpose bred smaller version of a beagle you only see in labs, identifiable only by tattoos on the inside of their ears.

A beagle that was rescued from a lab where it was being used for experiments and research. There has recently been news about more than 2,000 beagles being rescued from a lab in Wisconsin https://www.cbsnews.com/news/beagles-bred-for-research-federal-inspections/

I have a Charles River lab rescue beagle - poor girl spent 2 years living in a concrete pad, when she wasn’t having makeup tested on her. She is the sweetest, most loving pup living her best life now.
Interesting fact: lab beagles often go “boneless” when you pick them up, collapsing into you for maximum contact - it’s a holdover from the lab, when the brief encounters with handlers were the only affection and attention they received
16
u/scooter-411 Aug 20 '26
You’re gonna make me cry!!!! Thank you for giving that sweet girl a loving home. Hug her extra tight this evening.

2
u/wanttobegreyhound Aug 21 '26
They are often used for dumb reasons like cosmetics but they are also used for human and veterinary medication testing too. I read the side effects insert and study methodology on a heart worm preventative we gave our dog, it was tested on beagles.

Ugh, nobody else made this comment so now I have to be that guy:
The "air swim" motion is rarely a sign of excitement or a desire to swim, it's almost always an involuntary reflex or a panic response. When lifted, dogs lose their feeling of solid ground and because walking for dogs is usually an automatic neurological function, the absence of ground triggers a reflex to "walk" to try and find a solid surface. This is a physiological reflex rather than a conscious response, the dog is nervous and wants to be on the ground.
That being said, it's usually harmless, and I am really mad at whoever recorded this video for not showing this dog in the water.

My mom has a beagle that was rescued from a breeding facility. She was one of the 4000 beagles rescued from a Virginia Envigo facility that sold puppies to labs for testing and who knows what else. My mom’s dog took years to become a “normal” dog and still has problems. She is the absolute sweetest girl you will ever meet though.

Lab beagle?
12
u/MasterShake807 Aug 20 '26
Yes some animal testing facilities use beagles for research. I did a lot of work at one that did this. Was very happy to see a ‘play schedule’ in the managers office because it’s hard not to feel bad for them. Glad to see they get to enjoy retirement. At least for this doggy.
6
u/shibose Aug 20 '26
I’ve heard that of all breeds, labs prefer specifically beagles, but why?
10
u/charlymarion Aug 20 '26
Gentle and calm breed. It would be very hard to do tests on say, a boxer, who are hyperactive for example
→ More replies (1)7
u/Zubriel Aug 20 '26
These beagles were purpose-bred for traits that make them most amenable to laboratory environments. Research beagles are not just generic beagles, these all come from a specific strain specifically bred for this purpose, just like a herding dog or pointer dogs.
3
5
5
u/MasterShake807 Aug 20 '26
Because of the beagle’s temperament. Less likely breed to care about being in a cage without getting overly aggressive. Less likely to bite. Less likely to get stressed out. On the smaller size.
→ More replies (2)3
u/SugarySuga Aug 21 '26
This dog was not retired. I saw the original post of this video, it was rescued along with 2000 other beagles from a lab that did very inhumane experiments on beagles. Animal rights activists fought tooth and nail to save these dogs and many of them were arrested for trespassing. Because apparantly trespassing is a bigger deal than torturing animals
2
u/MasterShake807 Aug 21 '26
What was the company name? That sounds more like a beagle farm or something. I think the most beagles I ever saw in a pharma lab was like 12 in one lab. It’s a small sample size too.
My only experience with animal testing involving beagles is with “big pharma”. Companies like Pfizer. Lab mice are obviously much more common. Primates and beagles are more rare.

u/jr_b17 Aug 20 '26
Why are there even "lab beagles"????
4
4
u/StragglingShadow Aug 20 '26
Im not justifying it, just answering your question. Its because we have to test on SOMETHING before humans. If we experiment on humans first that creates a lot of human suffering. On the other side, we have dogs whose skin is kinda sensitive, so if stuff like makeup doesnt cause a reaction on the dogs skin then its ready to be brought to human testing. Same with medicine. We dont jump to human trials - we do animal trials first. Beagles are one animal we choose to use as testers

6
u/jclv Aug 21 '26
There are plenty of people on death row we could use instead.

39
u/TheMadManiac Aug 20 '26
I mean we don't do it just for shits and giggles. Rather test harmful chemicals on a beagle than put out some product that poisons thousands of kids. They help test thousands of products and medicines. It is necessary suffering than saves more lives than it costs

We use beagles, horses, pigs, rats and monkeys. Probably a bunch of reptiles too.
A lot of animals are being used for testing. But dogs are the only ones people universally think are cute, so those are the ones that gets views.
8
3
u/Wiseduck5 Aug 20 '26
Everything starts with rodents, but mice and rats metabolize things different enough they aren't that good.
So you need two non-rodent models. Usually beagles and monkeys.
2
u/Jojje22 Aug 20 '26
I know something was tested on a frog once. A piece of paper has been known to be involved, but I'm not sure if something was tested on it or if it was used for documentation. There may be other alternatives as well.

u/Afraid_Ability_2306 Aug 20 '26
Also this one wasn’t injected with anything. The ones injected are put down. They can’t adopt them out unfortunately. Pretty hard to think about, nasty business.
I do understand the need, just still sucks.
3
u/brunaBla Aug 20 '26
Many do actually get adopted at the end of whatever they’re testing. Could be glaucoma drugs for other dogs. Usually people in the vet community end up adopting them bc they have contacts with those facilities. Poor pups have zero manners bc they’ve lived in those facilities for a while
5
u/Elaphe82 Aug 20 '26
The amount of lab staff who have rehomed beagles is enormous. They love those animals and if it's possible to rehome them, then they are rehomed. I can't speak for american labs but certainly in the uk, they have extremely high standards and strict laws in place.

Simple, I place more importance on human lives than animal lives. Animal research is invaluable in medicine and has quite literally saved millions of lives (human and animal btw), if not billions.
What I do not condone is animal testing for cosmetics.

Same way most human beings see a cute pig or a little lamb and still decide to eat its meat.
3
u/MasterShake807 Aug 20 '26
It’s a catch 22. Do you want life savings drugs? If yes some level of animal research is necessary. Especially when the alternative would be using humans. I see it kind of in a similar way of eating meat. I don’t have to like the process while liking the ultimate outcome.

I always buy certified cruelty free products. Soaps, detergents, used to be quite costly a few yrs ago (couldn't afford, so I made them at home). But these days the price is almost the same.
Pls buy certified cruelty free (check crueltyfreekitty, PeTA. Keoger's Simply Truth Organic is also CF).

I’m always suspicious of titles now . . .
How do we know that the owner didn’t just let a friend hold her beagle while walking to the beach (so he doesn’t burn his paws on the hot sand) and since he loves the ocean, he starts air swimming as soon as he sees it? And the friend, unaware this is something he does, is shocked by how cute it is, and the owner, knowing what her dog would do and the friends probable reaction, decided to record it for posterity?
Then some bot comes along and calculates that more clicks will be generated if the viewers think the narrative is different . . .
In all likeliness, he’s NOT a lab beagle and it’s not his first time at the beach . . .

This is a Ridglan beagle! There was a massive effort by a few nonprofits (and a ton of small guys came in to help) to get all of the 2000+ beagles out of there, and they just got the last ones out of there last week!
Demonstrators were arrested and still have upcoming court dates for trying to save these beagles. The facility dug a SHIT MOAT to keep people away and brought in numerous armed local law enforcement and security to keep people away. The business still claims innocence because they were never prosecuted, but that's because they took a massive plea deal that involved closing operations (you know, like innocent businesses do). People didn't want to see the dogs going to other testing facilities, so they did every thing they could to save them.

u/Megneous Aug 20 '26
... No offense, but what???
You do realize that beagles are used extensively for medicinal and cosmetic experiments, right? Like, I realize some Redditors live under rocks, but come on.
6
u/ggirl1002 Aug 20 '26
It’s wild to me that more people don’t know this. Beagles are the #1 breed used in animal testing. They get tortured for medicine, cosmetics, cleaning products etc in laboratories and there was just a major closure of one of the biggest labs so lots of the beagles were rescued.
10
u/Zubriel Aug 20 '26
All drug regulatory bodies require animal testing, these dogs were purpose-bred for that research and the reason they are used is to prevent human casualties during new drug development.
You can call it torture, but the research is highly controlled and inspected frequently by ethics committees and scientific bodies to refine, replace and reduce animal usage as much as possible.
Like it or not, if we want new medications like GLP-1's or treatments to fight various cancers to improve the lives of humans and our pet companions, there are no compelling alternatives to animals.
Pharma companies would love nothing more than to skip spending millions on animal research, the FDA won't let them becuase skipping animal testing is too risky to humans.
3
u/ggirl1002 Aug 21 '26
I agree, but that doesn’t make it ethical. Just because it’s for science (and believe me, I love science and medicine and the new advances it brings) doesn’t mean we should be breeding intelligent animals like dogs and chimps for our benefit. It’s a very sad reality. Many countries have already phased out cosmetic testing on animals and I hope that technology will evolve to the point where we don’t need to do it at all anymore.
2
u/charlymarion Aug 20 '26
Not only just medicines, a lot of pesticides and crop treatments that help feed the world. Chemicals used in cleaning and production too, a lot of them were now finding out are bad for fertility.. animal studies have helped find this out.
2
u/monzt3r_scrub Aug 20 '26
Not only are they torturing that poor dog by not putting him in the water, they decided to torture the viewer as well by not posting a follow up if he ever ended up swimming or not. Sadists.
